- Well here it is. The modern stock 50cc saw class! from 85$ cheap as it gets, to mid grade plastic homeowner saws. All the way to top of the line professional chainsaws.
Something for everyone here. Measured horsepower, torque and weights full of fluid.
The 50cc saw class is very popular. very usable saw size. from the 1 time a year branch cleaning. To full time forestry use. Lots of arborists, tree service use the 50cc to get the job done.
Hope This info helps you decide on which 50cc is right for you.

A much-needed video, done in a clear, concise format. Excellent video!
Love my 550xp mk2. You are spot on; that saw can handle a little dogging in. Love running that saw.
Subbed. Love these kinds of videos! Definitely looking forward to the ported results. Yes, keep the videos coming Joe!
Thank you.
Great video! My old Stihl 029 is finally showing its age so I'm in the market for a new rig while my old work horse gets an overhaul and your video answered all my questions and confirmed some of my interests. Thanks again bud, keep up the good work!!!
Man I’ve been waiting years to see a comparison like this. Well done brother. I look forward to seeing what you test in the future.
Thank you.
The plan is to test the classes stock and ported.
New saws aren't broken in. This test is useless. @@dynojoemods2764it affects more than ten percent power to break them in. Maybe 20 percent.
@@dynojoemods2764 new saws aren't broken in. You can't possibly test like this because different saws have different machining and piston ring tolerances. How do you not know this. ?
@@sasquatchrosefarts
True, I have not seen much 2-3% increase after break in. Also not likely to buy a saw already broken in right from the box either.
50 to 1 always in Huskys. Had five saws all run on that mix. Never a problem and very little smoke.
Fantastic video. Once the numbers can be compared it was nice how they all stacked up.
Remarkable test.
wish the 545 was in there...but the 550 looks like the animal I seen videos of it cutting wood.
these tests are really informative. Hey Joe.....I appreciate it!!! Thank you!!!
I bought a Husqvarna 550xp Mark II last week that I am simply in love with in every way.
They are a very nice 50cc saw.
@@jone8626 And the color is gorgeous too.
I would love to see a video comparison like this, for the 70cc class saws. This was awsome to see. Great job and thank you for this video.
Working on acquiring the rest of them.
Great video, interesting info and great snappy tempo on present during the tests. Keep up the great work.
I had a 545 MK 2, it got stolen in broad daylight 300 feet from where I was standing. I replaced it with the 550 XP MK 2. I think I actually liked the power curve of the 545 better, but both are awesome saws. Great video. By the way, I run a 16" bar on mine, but it almost feels lighter with an 18" because it balances better.
Mine 550xp mk2 i did a 3/8 swap and i run 20" full chisel and for real its fucking amazing for people who know to sharpen . The 545 is pretty amazing too
I ve been waiting so long for this video! Thank you so much!
Yes! I’ve wanted to see someone with a chainsaw dyno for a long time, I’ve been watching guys compare saws in the wood on UA-cam for 15 yeas and it’s hard to compare with all the variables. Can’t wait for the 372xp big bore video.
I'll try not to keep everyone waiting too long. I do have a few other saws to finish first.
Good work Joe,
Just great to see some true data rather than, guesses and conjecture / brand loyalty / bias.
I got the heads up for your channel from Ironhorse, good work in the digital degree tool, looks too trick !

Thank You! Glad you could make it. Hope you enjoy the content.
Great shootout video by the way! Love seeing the real numbers of one compared to the other.
Thank you.
I hope it can help people figure out which saw is best for them.
i got 1 husqvarna 450 eii and 450 rancher with 20 in bar and chain i seriously love em they cut through everything i put em through
That was why I wanted to include them. They are a good option for a large number of buyers. And it is fun to see where they stack up.
Great testing Joe. I was routing for the Stihl's and Husky's.
I have a freebee Husky 550 xp with a toasted top end I may build in a month or so.
I'm pleased with the 450 I have and also the 455, the 455 is a beast for homeowner saw. I have a stihl ms 170 that is really the go to saw because it always performs great and never has an issue cranking or with the chain but as it is a smaller saw it can't compare to the power of the 450.
Echo cs590 will out cut that 455 rancher have both and the rancher sits on the shelf now
Joe your content is appreciated and informative. It got me thinking about the weights and power aspects and it seems like that's more important than the displacement when these tools are used. The 550xp is about the weight of a stihl 362 from the look of it here, so when an arborist is selecting which saw to grab at 4pm some hot Friday to finish the job, the weight starts to matter. The echo being so much lighter is really a different use case tool at that point regardless of the displacement being equal.
Feel in the hand is most important. Some powerheads balance just right. You need to feel each.
@@dynojoemods2764 I have yet to run a saw as well balanced all the way around as the original 550xp. Yes, it had less hp than the mk2, however, it was also lighter, and the power difference was less important than the weight difference when most of the day, in every way a saw can be used on the ground, and was light enough to be comfortable to take in the tree when you needed more than a climbing saw.
I wish they still sold the Mk1 550,
That was awesome thanks so much!! Keep up the great videos!!!
Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Man Dude this is a cool video!! The numbers don’t lie!!
Wish I could have you run though my saws!!
Thanks for the great comparison. I am the owner of the 550XP MKII, but I felt that there was something amazing about it (it has venom). Thank you for your valuable time.
Keep it up brother, love the content!!! Happy Holidays.
Thank you!
You too!
I liked and subscribed!
I did a muffler mod on a cheap Chinese saw that had horrible muffler problems. It was so bad that the plastic around the muffler was melting. I wish I could’ve dynoed it before and after it was like a different saw. !!
Keep up the outstanding work!Thank you, AJ
Thank you.
Muffler mod really helps out most saws.
Did you just drill out the existing holes on it? Several I’ve just removed the screens and seen a big jump in power
@@txlonghornremodeling on that saw I actually split the the can it had a catalytic converter mesh inside that I removed. And then drilled holes in the divider baffle. It had a baffling plate that had come loose and was blocking 75% of the muffler exit. I removed that as well
Then welded it back together.
@@andyjones6361 oh ok. You know most of these Chinese saws use the same muffler. Someone could make some $ if they’d come out with an aftermarket high performance muffler for these. But I’m sure California commies won’t let them because those mufflers will melt ice caps you know
good call on the notch lining up with the oil pump.
thats something i never knew and ive had all of these saws apart before countless times. minus the ebay and the echo.
Well done Joe!! This has to be one of the best shootout videos of all time! Way to knock it out of the park man!
Sweet vid man! Best side by side test of maybe the most versatile saw class IMO.
Thank you.
Just subscribed, you and Iron Horse need to do some collaborations, the Dyno will take all of the guessing out of porting and polishing and timing. Love it.
Just jumped over due to a shout out from Donny Walker. Looking forward to checking out more videos.
Appreciate it.
Hope you enjoy the videos.
Thank you for the great info
I have a 2017 cs501p, and removing the little tube from the exhaust and retune (remove limiter caps) made it run quite a bit better. I got to try a 261c, and they are very nice. Better ergos than the Echo, I think.
Excellent video! I subscribed and look forward to your content.
Thanks for sharing this will make my decision a whole lot easier
Go and feel them all. The one that feels the best with the best dealer support if probably your best choice.
I had that same cheep ebay saw it ran amazing lol not something I would use to buck fire wood but it worked to cut a few trees in my back yard then sold it
That’s a great informative video, thanks! When I hit the lottery and can buy every saw, we are going to do a test on the most powerful saw in each weight class, say by 1 or 1.5lb. Actual size won’t factor in. 👍🏼
Great video! I have both the 550 Mark II and the 261 V3 and this is exactly what I could “feel”. Both are great saws and each have their positives over the other but the 550 just plain rips.
Thank you
@@dynojoemods2764 FRIEND WHAT'S BEST ROTATION MAX FOR 372 XP OE 13500 OR 13200 RPM?
Love my 550XP... throwing a 16" bar/ chain on it, and it cuts like an indy car. Used it and a 261 for years. Felt the same differences myself. In soft wood, there's no comparison and the 550xp runs away. In red oak/ walnut, I feel the 261 has slightly better grunt, as shown, but didn't cut any slower/ faster than my 550.
@@jasontillison
Both great saws. And chain setup can close the gap or flip the difference between the 2 in the wood. Same with the feel of a saw in your hands. If they feel right they tend to cut "better" too
@@dynojoemods2764 you're exactly right! There's also a huge difference between when a student sharpens the chain vs the instructor. Also a difference between the angle I run on my personal saws vs the factory recommended angle I teach in classes.
Love your videos! Keep the coming!
Thank you.
Just picked up the 550xp Mark II…excited to get it in to some wood.
They are a great saw to run. I hope you enjoy it
I own bigger saws, but my 550xp mark ii is my favorite saw ever, I’m getting older & the lightweight , dependable, easy starting, lots of power little saw is NICE to use
@vikingnorm6935 I have a 35cc for small tops and brush, then I jump right up to my 390XP. Was thinking of either a 550 or 562 as a fill in the gap saw. How is the 550 after your used to running bigger saws?
@matticus6339 550 mkII is almost a joy to run after running the bigger saws. It's light and nimble but has good power to weight/size. I look forward to setting down my 372/390/395 and picking up the 550. Less stress on back and it's a little ripper. I think you'd def find it useful especially towards the end of a day.
@@matticus6339562 I don't have but intend to buy at some point. I can only speak on the 550 as of now.

My ported 501p runs amazing! It took about 20 tanks to break in. Great video! Keep em coming
I've been told that while a stock 501 isn't as powerful as the 261 or 550, it really wakes up with some porting. when all three have been ported, the 501 will be the most powerful.
@@TempestV I have a ported 501 and 261. And the 501 have far more grunt then the 261 for sure.
awesome video Joe!!
Glad I bought the 550 XP last summer. I love it. I would like to run the 261C someday though, just to try it
Cool stuff. I cheated when I needed a new firewood saw in this group. I picked a good bang for the buck saw. Lil bigger but not bigger money. Husky 460. I like it for what it is and I think that how you have to look at medium size saws! Good video
Again really enjoyed the video
Awesome video👍 reality at its finest!!

The numbers come in handy some times
Pretty cool video, i have one of those 5200 Chinese saws and I've been pleasantly surprised by it.... cool to see it side by side name brand saws.
I don't know how hit/miss they are. But this one put out good numbers.
Good test Joe. Love a 550xp
Awesome vid mate. Thank you
Thank you for watching.
I just watched this video for a second time. I now have the same cheap $85 saw that you have in the video. The numbers for that thing are actually pretty impressive considering how cheaply built that saw is. I have several of those clones that I just play around with, and out of all of them by far, the cheapest junk parts are all on that one that I have that’s just like yours in the video here so to put out those numbers is not too bad but don’t look at that saw the wrong way because it’ll probably fall apart😂.
Again, great video!
Hello and I enjoy your videos.👊🏻

Hoping to see some old vintage powersaw comparisons like this one.
Plan to get into some folders saws eventually.
Heh.... no surprise, my money was on 550...

Looking forward to the 372 content.
Great video, super cool content.

It's not just about the actual horse power but also the rpm. And the chain size and type.
It's the same for most sawing machines where it's the number of cuts and the depth of cuts.
Good to know my 550 Mark 2 is killin it. You just made yourself a sub my friend. very cool.
Awesome!! Wanna see 70cc shoot out
Still missing a couple pieces yet.
Might want to measure the bore and stroke of that Chinese 5200. They have 3 types of cylinders and 2 different stroke cranks. 32mm and 34mm the bore is 44 something don't remember exactly the others are 45.2mm dual and quad open port. For the 34mm stroke saws they have the same carb as the 32mm stroke saws and it definitely holds them back on power. Since I got lucky on purchasing mine it has the 34mm stroke crank I swapped to a quad port cylinder and made a intake to swap to a ms290 carb as they won't run super rich as if it's a ms390 carb. Jets are .04 difference. Very interesting video. I know these are new buy today's saws but a Lil Ole husq 55 in with those for craps an giggles would be interesting lol. Another great video buddy. Never thought someone would a actually take a interst in dynoing saws. Makes a guy happy seeing that someone has built a dyno or tweaked a kart engine dyno to be able to dyno saws with!
I have built 2 of these with intakes that use a 372 carb. I have a no longer available 61cc timberpro and the easy to get 54cc joncutter. With the bigger carb and a little porting, they run with the husky 550 and maybe a little better in big wood. My bud has a 550, if were cutting wood side by side the guy with the sharpest chain cuts the fastest.
That said, I dont cut a lot of wood so the vibs and cheap feeling of the Chinese saw dont bother me, if I cut wood for a living I'd have the 550xp as it's a better feeling saw to run, it has the best antivibe of all the 50cc saws.
The saw shown that he used is a base Vehpro 52cc so 44.9mm piston and 32mm stroke
@@thomasmorris4914 Yes I know his was. He mentions that. I was letting people who might read comments looking for info for these saws that doesn't know there are 2 different styles and possibly looking for some modifications they can do for cheap to gain some from one.
Thank you. good vid.
Great Video!
a ported 261c is just the perfect work saw
Very nice saws indeed.
Great job, thanks for putting the weight in. Would be cool to see that light and cheaper echo get some mods and see if it could come up the ranks. Maybe a money to hp shoot out of some sort ?
Nice ! I own a MS271, and I love it ! It placed 3rd in this test. It handles really well in real life.
I also own the 271 but was just offered a 450 Rancher with 3/8 chain. Thinking highly of trading it but can't make up my mind on it. What would you suggest to do
This is great. I've always knew the husky would come on top probably all across the board of CC but I'm a Stihl guy because it's the dealer we have here. It never disappoints so it's still fine stock. Now please do the smaller and bigger CCs.
Working on 35cc and 70-79cc saws next
Nothing wrong with any of these choices. The one that feels best will probably cut the best for certain people.
I have the 271 but was offered a 450 Rancher with the 3/8 chain, thinking highly of seriously trading it
I had my heart set on a Husqvarna 550xp but I picked up a stihl ms241 for a hundred bucks and I figure for that price I can learn to like it
@@dentondunn4346 I have a 450 rancher, never cared much for it. I swapped it to 3/8 chain and a 16" bar hoping to get some use out of it but dislike it even more. Tune is good, it just doen';t have enough power to effectively pull a 3/8, stick to .325 in my opinion.
Great video Joe. I really appreciate all of the time and thought you put into your content. Also, the fact that you’re a no nonsense guy. Reading through the comments, you’re quick to point out that if you like the feel of your saw, there’s no real point in trading up to a saw that makes slightly more power. My 395 weighs in nearly a full pound more than my 066 did, yet with the same size bar, it feels more nimble, so I sold the Stihl. Keep up the great work.
Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
Some experts recommend 33: 1 in oil mixture. No matter what the factory says. I think that a little extra oil hardly hurts, but is better than too little.
Exactly a tune
Dyno Joe! Great channel 👍🏼 I don’t know what access you have to 70cc saws but would love to see the 462 vs 572 on the dyno! I know the 462 is phenomenal but would actually like to see if the heavier 572 actually has a bit more power than the 462! Power isn’t everything that’s for sure, sometimes lighter is better but just something I’d like to see. New subscriber as well 👍🏼🌲

I've got a 550XP with an aftermarket muffler by West Coast Muscle Saws. I haven't used it a whole bunch but I have moved to some acreage and it's seeing more action(for display purposes only). I'm still learning the tricks of the hot start, but it's a snappy saw, probably at least equal to the stock Mk II, and it's lighter than either the Mark II or the MS 261c.
I have 550xp mk1 and it had the hot start problem in summer. I just used a piece of aluminium bubble wrap foil insulation to deflect the heat (I think the fuel was getting so hot it was vapourising so couldn't be pumped). Ryan on Surviving Ringworm had a similar problem with his 261 I think. Too many horses and heat for such a small saws.

@@dynojoemods2764 sounds good Joe, glad i found your channel, i love this kinda stuff, thanks!
Damn good video, graphs 'n all.

Interesting - I would be interested if you could measure vibration as well. There is also a lot of talk about some saws reaching max rpm faster than others which supposedly makes a difference in cutting. So maybe numbers on low end torque and how fast they reach max power/torque under partial load could be interesting? Like a tree limbing simulation... I changed on some saws from a .325/7 to a .325/8 what difference does that make cutting power/torque wise?
If I remember correctly, the 550 has a bigger fuel tank than the 261, so fuel usage measurements would be really interesting as well to see if this is a feature or just hiding a fault.
Thanks
I would like to see how the 346xp ranks, I was impressed with the modded 501p/4910 in one of your other videos.
very interesting .....
nothing runs like a husky. that being said I switched back to the stihl 261, it runs right with it and I feel it lasts longer. and I like the balance better
for a pro saw the Echos quite muffled up to keep the emissions in check with it being a stock carb and usually need a tweaking from the factory, are the mufflers restricted on the 550 and the 261?
Im guessing you will gain more from the echo doing the muffler mod. also the 550 is a very revy good for limbing not sure its got the same torque as the echo even though the dyno says otherwise. 🤷♂️ Ive heard lot of reliability of the 550s blowing up though here in the uk. Ive not used the stihl 261 but ive picked it up in shop and did think it was heavy
The 501 really likes a muffler mod. But they are very conservative port arrangement too. Echo wants them to Last and last.
Part of the "lack" of torque feel. Is the echo simply doesn't make the horsepower up top stock. So in use it dosent fall far from peak horsepower to peak tq.
Where the 550xp makes a bunch of power up high. But feels like it is falling way down on horsepower as it approaches peak tq.
Once all these are ported I will test again. I have most of the graphs on my Facebook page.

This video was awesome. Well done man. I can't believe how much hp over the factory rating the 550xp is. I just got a 562xp and factory rates it at 4.7hp. Now I'm curious if it really makes that! Also makes me want to trade my 261cm in for a 550xp.lol
Thank you,
My setup typically is a bit higher than the published numbers. If you like your saw, I wouldn't bother selling it off to get the other
I’ll say it again
GREAT VIDEO!!
Hey I watched Iron Horse tonight
He gave you a great plug on his channel. He was pretty impressed with your digital degree wheel. I think a good base to set your saws on is a must!
I would still like to send you my 460. What does shipping cost to ship that a saw and who’s got the best rate?
Still is the winner hands down .
No doubt 🎉
Very nice
Thank you
I own a 3 year old ms261, great saw, but I must admit I'm surprsed it's down a full half hp on the husky, I'd love to see a muff mod vid!!
I will likely just pick 1 saw and do a ton of muffler mods on it. From mild to extra wild.
Most normal muffler mods gain 3-7%
Cool vid 👍
Thank you
Love The Comparison could you do one for the 60cc saws
Cool video
Thank you
It would be nice to know what a stock Makita ea5000p would do- there are still some new in box Makita gas chainsaws to be found.
could you do a vehpo 5200 "dyno test" after adjusting the carburetor?
Tank's man!
Be curious to know if the hultzfarmas/joncutters which say 25:1 would seize at 40:1? I've used a few of those and they aren't bad for clean up around the house. Wouldn't count on one to make a living.
With good quality oil I don't see why they would have a problem at 40:1
I have the 550XP, and I have a ported 501P. I love both saws, but the 501 is nasty once ported. They really wake up. The horsepower and torque gains are significant. It's my go-to saw.
I think the ported 501 will surprise a lot of people.
@@dynojoemods2764 oh, it definitely will. I will be very interested to see what you bring out of it. I believe it will be the front runner.
I have the echo 4910(the cheaper $350 version of the 501p) and a stihl 261 manual carb as limb saws and the echo is my favorite. Its lighter, feels smaller, oils better, starts better when hot or cold, doesn't get real nasty around the caps. The stihl has a touch more power and I dont have to blow the air filter out as much. Echo really has a winner at half the cost of the stihl. Just have to muff mod it, which is well thought out too!
Joe I think it would be cool to take the (cheap saw 5200)and see what kind of power you can get from it.
That would show us what is possible from a cheap saw!!

i think any stock saw from huski and stihl is interesting to see here what it brings...
35,60,70 are all in the list. Just gathering them all in 1 place is the trick
Joe I’m running back through these videos and noticed how light that echo 501p is and it got me wandering if it would be a simple mod like the 7310 was. If you didn’t have to cut the squish just the cylinder base and port. And the main question is what kind of performance you’d expect??
501 mods very well with just cutting the base and moving the ports along with a muffler mod.
