*_First off, before you do anything else, look up the lyrics. Secondly, if you all didn't know, Gardner struggles with anxiety. He said that in particularly dark moments the anxiety can lead him to fearing that he will either turn his back on God and end up in Hell or that God will turn His back on him. In the midst of recording the album Beyond Control Gardner had exhausted himself and was struggling with his anxiety he sat down at his piano and wrote this personal prayer. This is a story; this is honest. God already knows what we are thinking. Don't be pointing fingers that he said the "F" word. I'm sure any one of you have had dark hateful times in your life and/or have regretted things you've said or done. If you say you haven't then you are lying and you need to be more self aware of yourself. As for the bad word, words can either be for life or for death. Look how this word is used. Our words reveal our heart. This is what he felt in this moment. I've recently have had anxiety and have felt these same things. This song is showing us how we are imperfect and God is always there with us. This song shows we can be real with God. We don't have to hide anything and God will always love us and be with us. The "F" word here is being used to build up, not destroy. This is not one of those nice "I surrender to God" songs. This is a realistic look into a lot of peoples lives (like mine). This song gives me hope; hope that he will be there in my struggles, in my fears, etc... He's never gone even when you think so and even when you're struggling and don't believe anymore or at all. Fear is violent and aggressive. The "F" word is how fear sounded to him in this moment. I don't think curse words are good, they are like a wild fire, but I do believe there are rare circumstances to use certain curse words; this is one of those rare circumstances. It's relatable, it's real, it's vulnerable, it's not perfect because we humans are not perfect. This story shows us that whatever we are dealing with, even in our times of our most low, abandonment, scared and unsure, when people look at you and say how could God love you when you did/do that, say that, etc... It's a love that will never go, that will never leave us. I highly recommend you to look at this song in this way and not out of context._*

i feel awful that he deal with anxiety and all of that, i know how that feel! However that is not an excuse to not be wise and have some discernment. Using the F word in a christian song is just not appropriate, i dont care how you want to put it, that is just wrong.

What's the difference between him saying it in a song and you saying it in your head? There is none. God will see it the same way. I personally think Jesus could care less about swear words, as long as they're not being used to tear somebody down. If you're listening to this and you're so caught up in the fact that he used a measly little word that you can't see how beautiful this song is then that's a problem. God is bigger than words. Wil gets it.

Is it wrong to use vulgar language? Absolutely, because it says so in the book of James that we can't use the same tongue to praise God and then use it to speak profanity. However, this is HIS prayer to God. He doesn't make worship music for you and me. He makes it for himself he sings them because he HAS to. Who are we to judge the way he speaks to God. You're telling me that there aren't people who struggle with this very thing and it's just a walk in the park? It's a cry of desperation. We are not here to convict him; the holy spirit convicts the heart, mind, body and spirit. For everyone flaming Chris on a stake you better have the cleanest tongue. Meaning you don't gossip, you don't judge, you don't swear in anyway shape or form...yeah that's right.

I think we missed it. This is the focus of the song:
    I’m right beside you!
    I feel what you feel!
And I’m here to hold you
    When death is too real!
    You know, I died, too!
    I was terrified!
    I gave myself for you!
I was crucified because I love you!
I love you, child, I love you!
Spread the love. Rock on, KK! - John 13:35

We need more songs like this. Christianity is not about pretending to be squeaky clean when we are not at all! We need to present ourselves real to God.

Theres a difference between a) letting something slip, then repenting to God and b) writing, meditating on, practicing, recording, and extensively editing something over a period of time.

    • @lucaspoon4202

We need songs of repentance and joy, not songs of doubt.
The very essence of repentance is knowing we are imperfect and make mistakes, but desire to turn away from them.
Presenting ourselves real to God is presenting ourselves as God's children whom he loves and will never leave and wants to be happy. That's what's most glorifying and pleasing to Him.
In His eyes, after being saved, our hearts are no longer as ugly as this songs makes it out to be. If we are genuinely and from our heart, hating anything in life other than sin, including ourselves, we're not following God's word and there's even a chance we're not actually saved in Christ. The Christian life is meant FOR CHRIST, not ourselves nor for this world. If a worship song isn't pleasing to Christ, it's not worship. It's selfishness. It's Christ or the world.
I know the song makes a switch halfway through, but it's God who pulls us out of problems with HIS word. Not we ourselves by listening to a song that says "be sad and hopeless" then abruptly switches to "be hopeful, but still very clearly in pain" (aka emotional high). And also not us just "psycing ourselves up" to remind ourselves that we love Christ.
Faith is NOT about our emotions. Faith comes first, then the emotions follow in time with maturity (not always instant). Is it our emotions we place faith in? Or truth in the word?
I'm not saying a Christian can't be discouraged ofc. I'm saying if they are, they are thinking wrong. And by thinking wrong, I mean thinking in the ways of the world. We literally do not gain the ability to understand and love the word until we come to Christ and then HE gives us the spirit of discernment along with a new heart, cleansed of sins crucified with Christ.
Again, wrong thinking happens to all of us whether we know it or not in that moment. I'm a new believer so I think wrong often, but I know those negative thoughts aren't actually my hearts desire but merely just habits built up over a life time of 22 years.
But God knows us and is ever patient. He is the most worthy father! That is worth praise!!
      Job 5:17-19
""Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
"For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal.
"From six troubles He will deliver you, Even in seven evil will not touch you."

A week ago today I was in the horrific depths of despair. I had serious ideations on taking my life. I was overwhelmed by pain - feeling utterly hopeless, worthless, and abandoned in this world; full of shame (from my own sinfulness), regret, and just.. darkness. I asked my friend to pray. He immediately said he would, and also sent me this song (but the explicit version). I was touched.. no, wrecked by these beautiful, real, raw, authentic words and the intensely relatable emotions that was conveyed. I broke down with not-so-holy weeping as I was driving in my car. I played this song over and over again for more than 30 minutes, I don't remember exactly how long. My heart was gripped as I heard my savior Jesus saying "I was crucified!!! Because I LOVE YOU!!" I'm not exaggerating when I say it was a life changing moment in my life. I felt my Rescuer rescuing me from the Pit. I had been a professing "believer" for decades, but not truly believing He could save me from my darkness. In a moment He showed me the amazing beauty of what He did for me on that Cross. I cry tears of gratefulness, because He could love a sinner like me 😭😭🙏🏻. I am so grateful for my life now. Thank you Kings Kaleidoscope for being used by the Lord, sharing the testimony of grace and resurrection through music. God is SO GOOD to me!! ❤️❤️❤️

After hearing the back story behind this song I completely understand Chad's choice of language. This is real life, and at this point and time this was the way the words flowed from Him and God understood him. It's clear in the response of God that He did not judge or turn His ear from Chad in this moment of crying out to Him because of one word. This was Chad's prayer unfiltered, I feel blessed to be let in to such a personal moment because I've been there, I am so grateful for his artistry and God working through him to create transparent music.

This song was one of the most powerful that I've ever experienced in concert. There was at least a full minute of silence during the quiet part. Not one noise from the audience, not one cough, no cell phone ringing, no walking. Just my quiet sobs. Thank you for sharing your heart, and the Heart of Christ, all in one amazing song.

Will I fall or will I misstep?
Will I fall or will I misstep?
Will I call you with my last breathe?
Will you be there for me after?
Will I waste inside the silence
Where the fear is vicious violent?
    Wicked sinner thrown to lions
With no hope on the horizon
Will I fall or will I misstep?
If I fall or if I misstep
If I fall or if I misstep
If I call you with my last breath
Will you be there for me after?
Cause i'm wasting in this silence
And my fear is vicious violent
I'm a child thrown to lions
Is there hope on the horizon?

also, this song liberates those who think that they will never be holy enough, this just shows that we are all human, and this is why we need God. I love how the song pauses and transitions between him praying and God responding, I believe many can relate. I also love how Jesus sounds desperate to call us and redeem us, it just portays his character so well. love this song

It's refreshing to find worship music that is intensely beautiful/emotional and connects me to Jesus so deeply. The first time i listed to A PRAYER on Spotify today i skipped back a couple of times - wait was that the F word? The word makes sense in context (a journal entry, being real with God... it's like a Psalm) and in recent years I have felt freedom to use the occasional expletive while talking to God... It's not something I do every day or anything; however I don't want to put on front - but instead I talking to Him like I would my wife or my best friend - to be honest/real about how I feel... When Jesus overturned tables in the temple he didn't say "you darn not very nice people" ... When A PRAYER kicked in and started talking from Jesus' perspective and how He dies for us and how he feels about us i started crying. Such an emotional song/album (as is a lot of their tunes) ... This album grabbed me right away and i'd give it a 5/5! ******** here's an interview Matt Carter (Emery/Bad Christian) did with Chad about the band and new album... if you want to skip to Chad's thoughts on why he chose to use the F word skip to about 32 minutes in facebook.com/kingskaleidoscope/videos/1290931494274235/ ***** In case anyone was curious, the CD is the clean version ONLY, and has the word "vicious" (as does this version on youtube). The vinyl has the explicit version of the song. And there are 2 digital versions of the album one "clean" version and one non-edited/explicit.

"But I feel like God doesn't mind", your words only show that YOU actually don't mind, do you really feel it's ok that he uses that word? I searched for this christian song and NOW i have to be careful because it is the "explicit" version and I wouldnt like for my little brother to start cursing, cursing like jesus did... Oh no wait he never did, it is beyond the fact it came from his anxiety that it is now OK to curse! Nonsense people.. We don't justify our bad actions like that, i like the song but it really wasn't necessary to curse. And NO God it is not you pal, He loves you and yes you can come clean but show a little respect after all He is you father, creator

People often forget that men of God like David, Asaf, and many other used to get VERY emotional and honest, just like this song. They would tell God that He had left them, abandoned them, and many other things I think are worse than dropping an f-word. The lyrics are so raw and real, that many of us fear it's inappropriate when actually we should always be real with God, and our prayers should be genuine. I love this song, f-word included. It's a real feeling. This doesn't make them less christian, just much more real to me. Thank you Kings Kaleidoscope for being one of the few christian bands out there who just get it.

this song never fails to make me cry no matter where I am. The beginning sounds like an exact replica of myself when I had depression, calling out to God never losing Faith but never understanding why I was not mentally okay. I'm so so so so blessed to come out of that oppressive place alive. But I wish I knew of this song during the time I was ill. The shout of Jesus' voice trying to reach to me resonates with me on such a personal level. I feel like He was shouting this at me the whole time it's just I was surrounded by a cloud of pain and sorrow muffling his voice. Sometimes I still go back to that dark place but I Know that God adores me so so so very much and the He shall never leave me nor forsake me and he loves me. And i strongly feel that if the Holy Spirit was a piece of music as it works it would be the instrumental part of this song and i want to be wrapped in it constantly

A lot of the words Paul uses in psalms are considered vile words in Greek, this shows emotion, despair, anxiety, longing, uncertainty, fear, and this is what terrified angry prayers sound like, no its not compromise, we are people we are human and God has instilled all of these emotions into us, we get angry, we cry out, we feel terror and it's real, I have to pray everyday to fight the urge of hatred, hatred for people who don't know any better, hatred for humanity as a whole, and that scares me, and as someone that has dealt with anxiety (as well as the artist behind this prayer) I can definitely relate. I pray people truly understand the meaning of this song and not just the F bomb, I pray the main concern is whether you're raw and honest with God or do you try to be perfect? God knows everything about us, you can think a curse in your mind, God hears that as well. I pray we all realize God loves us despite our slip ups and "hidden" thoughts.

No. Tattoos aren't sinful. They are forbidden in the old testament, but then so is bacon. However, the Bible has very clear words about guarding your tongue, not taking the Lord's name in vain, having pure entertainment etc. Why would Christians accept sin to make the church appear relevant? That is not progress. That is dangerous.

The Bible does not lay out a list of words that we are to consider as "swear words" which are forbidden. The issue is context. What I'm saying is not that tattoos are sinful and that we've accepted them anyways, but that we as christians are quick to judge people's intentions... just like you have done in accusing the songwriter of trying to make the church appear relevant. He's crying out with raw urgency and allowing you and I as the listeners to hear what that sounds like from him. "F***ing" and "Vicious" have the exact same meanings within this context. Just as fully tattooed skin and completely tattooless skin look the exact same before our God.

I think we both misunderstood each other. I am not saying KK put the F word in this song to be relevant. I completely understand the raw emotion they were portraying and the desperation conveyed is much more articulate with the F-word vs. vicious. I was referring to the mindset of accepting the world's standard/culture to appear "relevant." This is a trend that is frightening. In regards to context, how much does that context matter when a child who hears the song asks why she can't say the F-word if her Christian singers are? There is no way to explain why the F-word is a "bad" word without explaining it's vulgar meaning. Finally, my original point still stands. KK is a position of authority. They can use music as a medium to glorify God or man. My biggest disappointment with the use of this word is not the word itself, it is what it does to the song. It turned the song into a topic of debate where everyone focuses on the MAN's prayer rather than JESUS's response. C'mon? No artistic wording is worth that trade.

Those who call on Jesus as our lord and savior are saved by the sanctifing blood of Jesus the Christ. The fact you ARE struggling with sin is proof of the lords love for you and that you ARE saved otherwise the devil would have no need to attack you. In time of temptation we taught to call out to Lord and He will be there to guide us. He will take our troubles on his back he will save us from the temptations we to weak to face ourselves. Chad I don't know if you are ever reading this, but I want to say that I understand your need for the choice of words you did. I am not mad and I'm actually glad you end the song not in the darkness of the first verse, but in the light and truth of what Jesus does and says. Which shows you are not where you are anymore since you now know the truth. Jesus is seeking REAL who are honest with themselves and God. Many people here are trying to to put on a shield of self righteousness to protect there so said "holiness" but in reality none of us are Holy and I know we are trying to move forward in the holy walk, but what I've learned is that before we can move on, it must be dealt with. And you dealt with it so now from here on it keep moving forward and live in that truth that in fact Jesus "loves you" and that He is there in the dark. To be a light. Do not listen to the people that think you are less holy because of a word, you are you Chad. Rejoice in your Lord.

I love the honesty of this song, of this prayer. Without the end, it would be just a desperate cry to God, but with the ending that it has, it is amazing realization of hope that God provides. I personally went through times like that and I can relate! But God always gives us hope when we turn to Him, not always immediately, but at the end, He won, we will win.

I wanted to say one thing, to potentially help the situation here. I know this was written at a sad time but we all go through these experiences with Christ. When he puts us in a situation where we don’t even feel him anymore but we have to trust he’s there. Once we learn that it’s like the Glory clouds of heaven break open and we see him in all his majesty! It’s a test and the longer we walk with Jesus the easier those tests become.

Life is messy and complicated. Pain is a reality. Jesus still loves us, even when we get angry and say unfruitful things (which we all do) He loves us enough to not walk away, even when we sin, scream, doubt Him, loathe ourselves, get angry with the circumstances, say the f-word, etc. Jesus is so much bigger than our raw, broken humanity. Yet, He chooses to relate to us, because He loves us. That's the message i hear. ♡

I've actually never heard of anyone coming to God in this way, and now thinking about it...it is...simply REAL. But it isn't "encouraging" or "refreshing" to hear in a song. I'm concerned that people don't see what a holy and righteous God we serve. Just imagine people singing along to these lyrics, some with malicious spirits, taking the excuse that "well if he said it." But even still, if someone does relate to this, aren't we supposed to push each other towards the light, and not hold back and linger in the darkness? I just wish the explicitness was not published. I'm so incredibly sorry that this is how you felt once, I too have dealt with darkness of this sort, and I'm glad you found Jesus. But don't dwell in the oppression of your past. We serve a God of deliverance and freedom. In him there is joy! Much love xoxo

The F word has so much meaning in this song as it described how us Christians deal with falling into sin and wondering if God has turned are back on us or if we are starting to turn are back on him. This song truly is a life story for all Christians as we all have gone through times where we are running away from God. I dont agree with him cursing in the song at all but him putting that in the song makes the song so POWERFUL.

Dispite others saying that this song is irreverent, I think that the fact that Kings Kaleidoscope uses language in this song may actually be more reverent, where the artist is willing to pour our his entire vocabulary, even to the "vulgar" limits, to express his laments. It's an honest cry of the heart, accurately portraying a broken heart in need of a savior. Jesus is not after our tongues, but after our hearts, even the dirty and worn parts.

Despite a life of poverty in China, Yun since has spoken to thousands internationally with the gospel message. He was imprisoned and tortured by the government authorities. He became a highly wanted man across several provinces. He was finally arrested and sentenced to many years in prison. However, Yun continued his ministry while in prison, with more miraculous results. As a result, many prisoners and even some prison officials became born-again Christians. While he gained increasing favor from some officials, he also became a target of increased persecutions by others. He was repeatedly beaten and became severely malnourished. While in prison, Yun writes about undertaking a total fast without food or water for 74 days.
then after suffering all this he comes home to church and what does he find people arguing weather a man should be allowed on christian radio because he said the f word. not going into the world being of one accord. what is the body coming to.what is there in this argument.
2 Timothy 2:23-24 "Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful."

This song is a REAL song about REAL emotion. Him using the f word is a representation of who and where he was mentally. And it really fulfilled its purpose....obviously haha. Also, realize that this song is not ONLY made for Christians. Unbelievers may hear this song and be able to relate to something that they feel. This song is made to encourage man that we have a savior and he will never leave us. Don't ruin this masterpiece because of one word. Grow up, put ur big boy pants on, and just enjoy the music

I absolutely love that Chad was brave enough to be so brutally honest about where he was at when writing this. If we bleach over the parts of us that are mud-covered, this does nothing to remove the mud and leaves us with bleached mud. In this song's honest lyrics, we're hearing the prayer "Lord, Have mercy on me, a wretched sinner." While Jesus points to this honesty being approached in private, I wonder if He would applaud the license given to those who are also going through a rough patch to be honest with God and the community of Christians about the vulnerable place they're truly in.
We can vilify this band for "backsliding" because they spoke with honesty, but have you Never heard a trusted Christian leader say something that made you sit up straighter and say "Yes, you're right. That word or phraseology is absolutely appropriate in this situation of brokenness, pain or frustration."
I've used coarse language in the past when doing heavy manual labour and hurting myself. This isn't an excuse for using that type of language nor is it an good time to use it. However, in conversations with young people from a Christian Youth group who weren't themselves Christian, I spoke plainly about some forms of sexual relationship both those that are positive and life affirming and those that are destructive, broken, and leading to a sort of imprisonment. I explained that the way that leads to death is similar to the colloquial understanding of the f-word defined. In this situation, I conceded the use of the f-word to name it for what it truly is, speaking to the selfish, life shattering nature of brutal rape.
In another instance, I recall my old, English Anglican Vicar say to me, in light of the situation of a 15 year old girl who died of an excruciating cancer, "This is shit, in every sense of the word." It struck me that this was an ok time for this word to be used. It wasn't unclean or vulgar. It was correctly applied to the emotional attachment for which it should be used.
In my interactions with people with extreme anxiety and depression, I have learned to be very calm and permissive as I listen to them share their concerns, frustrations, fears and other life pains. If I required them to "keep it clean", there's no way they would share with me honestly. This song speaks to that necessary honesty. If we can't be this honest with God, we are nothing but white-washed tombs, full of death and decay, but at least we look good on the outside.

Having struggled with severe anxiety myself in the past, I'm sad for Gardner. It can be an indescribably difficult struggle. This is an incredibly raw and beautiful and encouraging song that I'm sure anyone can connect with. With that said, I am saddened that the f-bomb was left in when published. That actually serves to disconnect me to the music. There is abundant grace for moments like this, but according to Eph 4 and 5, God reveals that he not take delight in explicit language. I find no example of this kind of creative expression in any of the Psalms or laments. I completely understand where Gardner is coming from. Thankful for him, how God loves him, how He's transforming him, and using him. But I'm sad by how he chose to publish this. For sure.

In my personal letters and prayers to God i'm sure I have used a curse word or two out of frustration and anger. I appreciate the song for its artistry and rawness.
The reasons why I don't think it was wise to add the "F" word in the song was because:
    A) The bible does say that profanity is wrong-in many verses, new and old testament.
    B) This song is on the internet, on iTunes, on YT in which a bunch of young and old believers have access to. This could bring confusion and furthermore lead to some believing it is okay to implement vulgar language into their everyday vocabulary (that is of course if they don't understand why he was using the "F" word in the first place).
Again, I recognize he was being raw, etc. It's just that (especially) when you are in a place of authority or wide-reach, you are being observed and imitated constantly. So you do need to be conscious of what effects your decisions might make. Other than that, Kings K is awesome and I will continue to listen to their music. They are talented individuals that I believe God has and will continue to use greatly! Looking forward to more from them!

    James 3:8-12
8 but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
