Your tips are so useful! One thing I always TRY to do that does save money is maintaining the items I have bought - cleaning, storing, using protective paint ( like Rustolem clear coat ) , lite sanding & repainting, anything that will prolong the items for life for outside. I hate having to rebuy stuff! New Gardeners should remember that gardening is a process- it is something that revolves over the years- Enjoy the journey!

Every one of these tips is extremely relevant, especially for someone on a limited budget or starting from scratch. Five years ago we purchased a small home that had been renovated but the yard was sparse grass, weeds and buckthorn hedges. Pretty awful. Fast forward to today and I have a yard where neighbors driving by stop and tell me how much they enjoy seeing my garden. Facebook Marketplace has been my best resource for free or heavily discounted items. The one other tip I would add is to get free arborist wood chips if a large area needs to be covered. And most municipalities have piles of free wood chips available for residents, with usually no limit on how much you can take.

I loved this video. The comment section has such great ideas too. I too repurpose whatever I can find. My biggest fail was trying to turn a wooden bed frame into a herb bed. It was a queen size, hard to position and I did not treat it. It really warped. But I just moved the plants, repurposed what I could from frame and kept going. I also go to goodwill and other thrift stores to find things to use as pots, pot holders, storage for my garden items, etc. I am now able to melt holds or drill holes for drainage. Dollar Tree has so many things I can use as clotches. A $1.25 laundry basket will a rock on top will protect my plant from birds. I have drawers from an old dresser I am going to use for flowers this year. My old grill will be filled with strawberries and flowers in the spring. I have been making compost bins from pallets. So much fun. Also I’d like some seeds of whatever you want to pass on. Thanks

Great tips! I tried reusing some of my potting soil last year. I did about 1/2 old Espoma potting mix with 1/2 of the Espoma Land & Sea compost. I added the Proven Winners granular slow release fertilizer. It worked quite well-I had tons of flowers and I only used the liquid fertilizer twice. I am going to try this again this year.

Don't forget dividing plants. I've divided hydrangea, heucheras, grasses, groundcovers, annuals, on and on. Unless it was a super expensive shrub, I will always experiment and try to get my money's worth. Just check the root system. Unless it's super tiny and fragile, just cut and separate it into as many pieces as you like.

Great tips. I have done a ton of seed swaps, warning!!! it's addictive ahhahah. Also "seedy Saturday' is an event held in the first part of the year in most of Us/Canada. You can search for your local town and see when they have it. It usually has seeds to swap, or is really inexpensive like $.25. Also will have vendors with seeds and other garden-related booths. And ours has a kids section where you can plant something and take it home. We used to go every year, I hope it's back this year, it's been canceled the last 2.

I also start saving old potting mix, I’m going to use it for bottom of my raised garden or bottoms of big pots. Just add some fertilizers and mulch leaves.
Swapping seeds it’s a great idea.

Such great tips! I’ve been gardening for 12 years. I discovered YT garden channels in 2018. In the beginning, I did it with my kids then my kids grew up. I still didn’t know what I was doing until I started hanging out at my neighbor’s garden. My garden didn’t start thriving until Jess from Roots and Refuge showed me I didn’t have to be afraid of failing. I was sick and tired of failing and spending so much time and effort, not to mention wasting money and seeds. Now that my vegetable garden produces well and I’ve started growing flowers and everything else😆, many of my friends ask for advice and help getting started. They are surprised when I answer “I don’t know” to some of their questions. On one hand, I stuck to it because I was learning and searching out answers for myself, but the results were amazing when I started being curious about how other gardeners did things. In the space of five years, my garden went from four 4x8 beds to a 6400 square foot space. There’s plenty of room left to add more beds to that space. AND I can actually help others start a successful garden!

I forgot to mention my fave cost saving measure-propagation. It’s saved me tons, especially on shrubs like hydrangeas and even boxwoods. I propagate my own plants, and other gardeners are usually happy to share a cutting. BE SURE TO ASK FIRST! Some plants are crazy easy to root. I didn’t know boxwoods would be so easy but I’ve got like 15 in my ‘prop box’ (just a clear plastic storage box with some holes in the lid). I plan to start a hedge next spring. They’ll be small but that’s okay, they were FREE!!!
