Sent this to my boyfriend too this morning. Our first Christmas together, but he is back in Virginia with 2 of his adult children and only granddaughter (so far). He may or may not be here for New Year's at this point. But I miss him a lot right now. By the way, we aren't young ones either... he's 68 and I am 66. So we grew up with Carpenters music. And we originally met back in 1976, 6 years after this song came out. We were both in high school then.
Even though she's gone, her memory still lives on. Best voice ever !

I was working at a refinery in California. Afternoon shift. Came home, took a shower, and turned on the Radio. They announced Karen Carpenter had died. Silly, I didn't know her but I cried. I was 25. I couldn't believe it. I thought she was beautiful, and had the voice only GOD to grace a lady. I remember being 12 in 1970, yelling at my sister to come in to our parents house to listen to "Carpenters" on TV. They were singing "Close to You". My sister and I just looked at each other and new they were STARS! Richard and Karen...... The whole family is talented. Thank You Carpenters! My sister Joy loved you, I wouldn't admit back then..... I will now. I loved these two!!!! Just indescribable the sound of them......Above and beyond....Like Heaven where Karen is... I hope I'm lucky enough to hear her again. Richard you too... were blessed with a voice.... and writing music. Your voice can be heard, bass, @ 2:56? The world lost out BIG time......Merry Christmas CARPENTERS love you.

The new arrangement is beautiful but as a hard-core fan, I would have expected less restraint in augmenting this Carpenters Christmas classic and bringing it to whole new level of listening experience. Yes, there are enhancements but they are too subtle to make any profound difference.

I didn’t know this song till last night before going to sleep. The voice of Karen is so soothing. For many months of interrupted nights, last night was the best night I had. I slept well.

You can hear the little different orchestration changes between this one the original in 1970 and the one I had become more acquainted with in 79....vocals are very similiar though....both offer the same plaintive haunting emotional reward of the mounting vocal harmonies in the end....either way...One of my top 3 Xmas songs of all time...Guess I have to thank Richard C for the beautiful arrangement....and all the tears this song has offered ..Amazing how something so sad can offer so much pleasure
