    A quick question. I keep hearing, and also saw you mentioning that Fusion does not produce Class A surfaces. How big of a deal is this actually, is there a big difference in the quality of reflections produced in Fusion vs something like Rhino or even Alias?
    I have been watching your videos and trying to find the best approach for my purposes, I plan to fabricate a custom body kit by CNCing negative molds made in CAD and then lay fiberglass using those molds. Fusion/SW Power Surfacing/Rhino seem like the easiest tools to get the following job done:
    I have a mesh body kit from a video game that I want to recreate in CAD using forms/surfaces (not yet sure what is the faster/easier approach), scan my car and then fit the recreated body kit onto the scan data. Would I be able to adapt surfaces parametrically just as easy as I would be able to fit forms onto the newly scanned 3D mesh? I don't want to recreate the prototype body kit from a video game mesh only to have loads of issues trying to adapt the same model to the accurate car scan data. What approach and software would you choose for this while also considering potential surface quality issues? Thank you so much.

      Hey there, ill try to answer all your questions but let me know if I missed something.
      Class A, how big of a deal is it? If you aren't an auto maker probably not. At the end of the day you have to look at the goal with the file. You mention CNC mods in cad. I assume you are going to do Foam. The surface quality from CAD to a foam CNC part probably won't translate so having something like a Class A surface probably isn't needed. The big thing with Class A is really control of curvature. Forms "approach" class A, but the problem really is direct control of that curvature. Surfaces would not be Class A.
      For me Fusion does a better job of Mesh based forms designs. I love Power Surfacing and its a great tool but the cost of SW plus PS adds up quick. Power surfacing has edge weighting that Fusion forms don't have. That is really nice. But to do mesh based designs I believe you also need their RE add on. Rhino, I wasn't a fan of Rhino7. but haven't used 8. so i don't know how well it handles mesh designs.
      Mesh from a game asset. Mesh from a game vs a designed file off a scan will be different. With fusion you can pull a form down to a mesh. It still isn't an easy process but i have loads of content on the subject.
      Adapting parametrically. thats tricky. You can use Match in fusion with associative option but parametrically controlling a form is a no go. You can drive a form shape with a sketch but its direct editing. It doesn't retain a link to the sketch (other than the Associative match).
      You are likely not going to be able to adapt a mesh from the game to a scan of your car. you would need to design it. The mesh itself will be bad to go to CNC/CAM programming. You can base a form body off the mesh shape. If you could convert it to a quad mesh that might be a shortcut to get a form body.

      @@LearnEverythingAboutDesign You've answered things more than enough, thank you so much once again, it means so much to me, honestly, Patreon is my next step. I definitely have more confidence to approach this now, I've been looking for the correct tool for the past month, trying different software and it seems like Fusion might actually be the best, quite surprisingly also considering it's free.
      Power Surfacing feels very clumsy at times and the weighed edges feature can be quite "buggy" in my experience, not producing smooth curves and results for complex surfaces from the few days I've spend trying to use it with no major 3D mesh modeling background. It offers no real benefits compared to Fusion, at least for this purpose I guess.

      Yup. My company contracts for Autodesk so a lot of the content for Fusion and some Inventor on the Autodesk site was made by me. This channel is a way to dive deeper into areas I just get to cover or some times have to skip in official content.

    in my experience Surface modeling in cars is drastically more common as its more accurate and precise to design and rules, the biggest issue with modeling a car in something like fusion 360 in my experience is sketches and the hierarchy system, a lot of software designed for surface modeling just don't have anything like that and it allows you to create changes to early geometry without ruining everything later down the line, in the end its probably just personal preference and software

      no that is great insight! I started modeling cars with surfaces in various CAD packages like Inventor and Solidworks. Some are easier than others. With Fusion one main issue is the quality of the surface tools currently. If you do surface modeling with curves/cage in something like Alias you can get true Class A surfaces, you just don't get that in Fusion. BUT to be fair it wasn't made for that :)
      With forms you can attach to a curve or to surfaces so you can drive them in some areas to be more precise, but on the whole it just wasn't designed for it(surfaces and forms) so pick your battle ;)

      @@LearnEverythingAboutDesign I've used alias once and I found it to be quite buggy and the learning curve was incredibly steep, there wasn't much info i could find on it, I've seen Rhino3d to be pretty popular with surface modeling using curves(especially for automotive use)

      @@Ckcdillpickle I used Alias a long time ago and it wasn't easy to learn for sure. I am going to be giving it a test drive here soon to see how the SubD modeling compares to other programs I used. I hope to add Rhino to the list of stuff i cover this year as well.

    I just don't think I agree with your hypothesis of the forms being easier to retroactively change. The forms aren't great but I've found customers will have quantifiable change amounts that I can more easily alter. For example, "make that curve a quarter inch higher". This is of course personal preference. Thanks so much for all your hard work!

      Fair enough! By easier to change I generally meant that you can push/pull the shape easily. Surfacing in Fusion 360 isn't super stable and trying to change the profile of say a sweep or loft has a very high chance of breaking the timeline.
      For any surface that needed precise inputs it has to be done with surfaces or solids for sure as sketches are only a "suggestion" for a form :)

      I ended up pulling those down because the results weren't great. I have had issues with the Fusion surface tools and raised them with Autodesk and I felt that until they were addressed i didn't want to push people down the path of surface modeling a car. Maybe I should pull this one down. I do have a new surface mastery series which does go over some of the things needed to model a car. I will be adding to that series and cover some of the topics there.
