    This lady gives a mainly positive account from what I hear. It’s a shame more people can’t find a way to speak encouragingly about a business that has done so much in supporting masses of people to make changes, but instead try to make a point about “chewing bananas” and effectively shame those who are proud of themselves for losing weight by slating the method they’ve used. SW isn’t perfect but it doesn’t deserve a bad rap. It has done so much and my consultant really cares about her members and their relationship with food.

      The sole message of this episode is not about the banana. We had this conversation over three hours of conversation (across two episodes) because there was so much to discuss in order to look at SW as a whole. It's quite balanced. There are positives where they are due, and we do say more than once that the consultants do care about their members. We also say that we are not about shaming people who are on a diet, because they don't yet have the knowledge and information about WHY SW is not a healthy approach to eating. The plan absolutely does deserve a bad rap, along with all other diets on this planet. I work with people day in, day out, whose lives, health, and happiness have been destroyed by diets such as SW. I could give you some really scary stats about how many people develop full blown eating disorders after following the likes of the slimming world plan.     I used to be s consultant. My team developer was awful that's polite way of describing her. She did get paid for recruiting consultants. She was make appointments to visit but then night turn up. I reported her for bullying nothing was done. I now have gained all my 8stone loss back and have a bad relationship with myself. Thankyou so much for this video xx

    I fell across this vlog. I totally get the message and the good intention in it. I have to agree with all that was said. I am now 61 and it's taken me many years of doing all that we do clubs etc etc. I am healthily in the 14 stones (was 21 stone at heaviest) and understand what my body needs. 💐😉

    Hi. So, I get weighed at my group every Tuesday morning and then have the day off 😂I have nothing to do with SW on a Tuesday. I'll have what I want, icecream, chippy meal and I still lose every week. I've never had a gain since joining. My friend has lost 21lb in 7 weeks and she has the Tuesday off too. I understand the negatives, but the structure and routine of SW is exactly what I need and there's members at my group who've been there 20yrs on a maintain.

      Doesn't the fact that you need a day off show that it's not sustainable as a plan? I'd also say that the 21lbs in 7 weeks is worrying. It's very fast weight loss. All the evidence shows that this is not going to be good in the long run. As for the people on the plan for 20 years, it makes me sad. That's no way to live. Given the choice would they really genuinely want to be on a diet for the rest of their life? I too need structure and routine in my life so I understand the pull there, but there are definitely other ways of getting that.

    I'd love to hear more and see Sue back on. I have been a sw member on and off for the last 11years with my leaving a few months ago with little to no loses despite following plan. This has just hit the tip of the iceberg, I would feel so much guilt and place automatic blame on no weightloss if on the odd occassion I wanted to eat Oats for brekfast and perhaps bread for lunch! Would love to hear more about the food aspect and why so many of us do not see success!

      I absolutely resonate with all of those areas you talk about. The plan encourages guilt and blame and it's no fun when you're in the middle of it. Have a listen to part 2 of this conversation - there's more about the food there.

      I couldn't agree more. Any eating plan that doesn't 'allow' cereal for breakfast and bread for lunch is without doubt 'restrictive'. I am coeliac and because of the way gluten free bread/cereals etc are made they don't tend to have much fibre. I try to have both in order I get my fibre quota, and you just can't do that with SW. Oh wait, I'll hear the 'just syn it' popping up. So I need to miss out on other things because I'm thinking of my digestive system? Ridiculous. Just Ridiculous.

    Hi, this is the first video of yours that I've watched. I joined SW recently but I have mixed feelings about a low fat diet/lifestyle. I previously lost loads of weight on Keto but regained in lockdown. Just out of interest I wonder if you may have covered hunger hormones, Leptin and Grelin etc in any other videos? I found a higher fat diet easier to manage hunger cues and I was quite shocked to find that there was no discussion of dealing with hunger at the SW intro when your calories drop so drastically at the start of the SW plan. I've struggled with the binge restrict cycle due to extreme diets and I do believe it gets easier as the weight comes off but it's definitely a factor when your hormones are so out of balance due to weight gain. I got the feeling my consultant wasn't aware of the impact of the hormone imbalances that occur with weight gain, as nice as she was. I found this video quite insightful and it's confirmed what I already suspected about SW and slimming clubs in general. It's novel for me atm having been on low carb so I'm going to give it a go but I doubt I'll continue once my membership runs out, We'll see. I do believe in intuitive eating but I think it's easier as the hormones subside. Another issue can be anxiety because food gives your brain a chemical hit that's quite calming for anyone who's experienced trauma early in life. Food can act as a sedative that becomes addictive, and I could be wrong but I don't think slimming clubs in general address the addictive side of certain foods and why people use them to manage emotions. Apparently 30% of slimming group members have some form of binge eating disorder, and I'm not sure the binge restrict cycle is ever properly addressed in those groups. At least that's been my experience having done other diet clubs previously. It can be a vicious cycle of preoccupation and guilt as you rightly mentioned.

      You're absolutely right - the conversations about hormones, hunger & fullness, restriction and how it affects eating behaviours, the actual BENEFITS of food, and anything relating to mental attachment to food is all missing from these groups and plans. It's because they're not trained in those areas. They can't talk about it because they don't know that it is even an issue.

    I didn't think much of SW but get on really well with a free calorie counting/exercise app. Stop spending money to be told to eat less!

      A very interesting podcast. There seemed to be a lot of resentment there. I’m a SW member and on the social team doing the weighing. I’ve maintained a healthy weight for years. I gain a bit on holidays and at Christmas, then lose it by simply following plan , which I don’t even see as a restrictive diet, because it’s not. I enjoy socialising with friends and family. I still believe in SW as promoting a healthy lifestyle , encouraging moderacy in all things. Ours is a wonderful consultant that has addressed all the topics you’ve covered here. The fact is that some people do better on higher carbs, some on higher protein. It suits vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, carnivores..it’s all covered. It’s all about eating to satiety whatever food preferences you have., and the budget you have. The plan has all the nutritional training any of us need and a good balance of all the nutritional components we need. I really feel this is a nit picking and really poor representation of the entire plan. In life we can’t have ‘the Penny and the bun’ all the time. For around £6 a week my group is a great friendly and supportive session in learning about achieving good health . In my opinion, personal trainers, the sachet plans , private dietitians psychologists etc etc would cost a hell of a lot more and most people can’t sustain it anyway…because that’s where there would be real restrictions . How we take all the information we get through SW, and use it, is entirely up to us. It’s there to be used and I suspend any cynicism about how the SW business operates because, frankly, thats just business! It’s still good value…simple, sustainable and less ‘restrictive’ than anything else I know of out there. Also less likely to trigger eating disorders than some other ‘systems’ because a healthy relationship with food is fully encouraged. There are usually other underlying mental health issues with people who develop eating disorders.

    Hi, I started slimming world two days ago. I have never been able to lose weight and keep it off. I don't binge eat but lately and with long term illness I need to get some weight off for my health.
    This said, yesterday myself and my husband, went to a number of supermarkets with the slimming world app, checing what it says is free and checking them in the app. These free foods all have a syn value according to the app, except vegetables and fruit.
    I also have steroid induced osteoporosis and have been advised by a consultant dietitian what my daily intake of calcium should be, which is more than daily allowance.
    I actually said in my very first class, when the consultant said eat as much as you can...common sense says, I will eat until I am full and only when I'm hungry...I never even set a goal weight, I said I will see what I can do, seeing as my illness means that I have to take some strong medication including daily steroids.
    I will keep going and help others along the way x

      Hello! Thanks for sharing that. I'm afraid diets themselves will be the reason you aren't able to maintain the weight loss. Your body has a set weight that it is designed to be, and it will always try to get back to that. I'd love for you to remove the link between weight and health. It's actually not a true link. Health is all about behaviours - so the variety of food you eat, the movement you take part in, your sleep habits, whether you smoke and drink etc. There's also a lot to factor in about money, health care, and weight stigma. Definitely follow the consultant's recommended calcium advice. The big issue here is that might not be attainable easily on a plan like Slimming World, because it restricts your dairy intake (think of those A choices - they're tiny), plus the fact that things like the lovely calcium rich greek yoghurt is now out of bounds. I love that you want to eat until you are full though. That's a much better approach! Take care of yourself x

    While I wish you well with whatever plan you are following - I don't agree at all with a lot of this. Being a person that's literally ill from weight I have put on - I have joined SW - I'm 17.5lbs down in 3 weeks.
    Anyone who thinks you can lose weight without some sort of restriction is away with the fairies. And I don't want to just be happy as I am cause I'm so unhappy - I don't feel its fair to paint SW and all its consultants the same. My consultant said free food until you're full and is so helpful and nice.
    As they say, "You do you though!"

      Hi Louise, health is a result of behaviours, not of weight loss and weight gain. You don't become unwell merely through gaining weight, and you don't become well and shed health issues through losing weight. Your health (more often than not, because there are always exceptions) changes because of a change in behaviours. Maybe that is changing the foods that you eat, getting more or less variety in food, changes in quantities of food, changes in environment, changes in activity levels. All these things do often coincide with dieting because we change loads of habits when we diet, but it's not the dieting and weight loss that creates health changes. You can make those changes and then weight loss is a byproduct of that. However, restriction is never ok.
      Weight loss to your degree is worrying, due to the effects that dieting and weight cycling has on our bodies. I would urge you to research this more, through the lens of intuitive eating.
      Also, intuitive eating is NOT a plan. That's the point. Plans create rules and restriction. IE is not that.
      We absolutely were not painting all SW consultants with the same brush though. If you had listened to it with a neutral ear you will have heard that it was a balanced conversation. There were plenty of positives in there, as well as the negatives. We said on multiple occasions that not all reps are the same. Sue, for example, wanted nothing but the best for her members. We actually did say in there that it is NOT the consultants' fault - it's Slimming World as a business model that is at fault. But you appear to have chosen to ignore that.
      Please do look into this more. Keep following, keep watching and listening to my videos, keep commenting, and keep learning about it. It'll make all the difference in the long run, I promise.

      That's all well and good but anyone who doesn't restrict what they eat will live forever in an overweight state and that's what I have decided I couldn't do anymore. I needed a shopping trolley to go around the supermarket - not for the shopping but for my back which could not support me. I couldn't walk properly - how do you not class that as ill health. I wouldn't be taking blood pressure meds if I had my weight more under control (I hope to be rid of them in time)
      If people were honest with themselves, the weeks they didn't lose, something off plan was eaten or drank. I don't mind if it's a business if we can call it that - I feel great and I'm going to stay in the positive mindset I'm in
      If everyone just ate what they wanted, nothing would change for them. I also don't care whether it's water weight at the start or not - it's made things easier for me in only 3 weeks - though I have a lot further to go.
      I only came across the video cause of typing in SW anyway!

      ​@@louiseogorman5018 no, you're not correct in what you are saying there. You do not automatically live in an overweight state if you don't restrict food. In fact, restriction triggers the body to drive you to eat more, and eat more foods like carbs, and so restriction can actually be the cause of the overeating you're so worried about. Plus, there are many people who are in restriction, yet are really very unhealthy. These diet plans are so one-size-fits-all that there's one level of calories for all people, and no accounting for what you as an individual needs.
      I'm really sorry to hear that you struggle. That's no fun. Please know that those issues you talk about are also behaviour driven, not weight driven. I'm making assumptions here because I don't know you, but I'm willing to guess that you don't exercise too much because you feel that you can't. However, if you worked your core and built up the strength in your core muscles, your back would be supported, and then that would support you to move more freely without the support of the trolley. The issue there is not your weight, but the strength of your muscles in your body. Also some flexibility exercises would increase range of movement. All of that put together would help you to be able to walk and do the other things that you are clearly upset that you can't manage at the moment. A lot of the management of blood pressure could also be attributed to movement. Getting some daily movement has really good impact on blood pressure. That, with some changes or additions to the types of food you are eating, will work wonders. This isn't at all a criticism - it's words of support. You can start really gently. You don't have to hit the gym to do this. But to blindly believe that you have to diet to make those improvements is only harming your health. I'm just asking you to open your mind and take a look.
      When people at a diet club didn't lose because they were 'off plan' it is just supporting the idea that these diets are not sustainable long term. If they were, people wouldn't feel the need to go 'off plan'.
      With regard to eating what you want and nothing changing, also incorrect. In fact, everything changes. The body realises you're not restricting and you have a natural balance of foods across the board. You do not just go mad and eat everything in sight with complete disregard for any kind of health impacts. I know that is what you think will happen, but it's not the case. Studies actually show that people who are intuitive eaters have less weight fluctuations, and better intake of vitamins, minerals, and macros (carbs, fat and protein) than any diet plan provides. Eating in an intuitive way also allows your body to find its natural set weight point, which means it will settle where it's biologically designed to be.
      I wish you well, and I wish you happiness and health. You know where I am when the dieting gets tough and you need some support to find a better way to improve how you feel physically.

    I love Slimming World. It's not perfect but nothing is. I haven't given up anything and have managed to lose weight. I would rather be on a healthy eating plan for life than suffer the health risks of being overweight as I get older.

      I'm sorry that you aren't yet aware of the facts around being 'overweight' and how it isn't that that will affect your health. There's far more to it, and I hope you will stay subscribed and learn a little more about that.

    I watched your video. I have to say that coming from an overeating and yo-yo dieting background, SW has been the only diet I can stick with and stop the mindless eating of junk food and fast food. I have been away from SW quite a long time. I did lose 5 stones or 70 lbs in 13 months in the past. I slipped and though I didn’t gain it all back, just most of it, I think what worked for me was this, reasonable portion sizes of what I knew would slow my progress or stall me out such as starchy food, add more Speed to back me off and moderate my portions of protein. I just got back on January 1st with a clear conscience. I can see and feel a difference in a few days but I believe that it has worked for so many to get to Target, why not me is the question there. I don’t like to be hungry. I think SlimFast lol! But I do think this is a good diet Plan but moderately eating the foods that could give you issues is key and I agree, it isn’t an all you can eat buffet. It takes focus and dedication to know when to stop and drink something it have some soup to back you off. Give yourself a chance. New year, new you!❤❤❤

      New year, same awesome you - that's my motto. You are always brilliant, regardless of body size. And I agree - SlimFast, urgh! The hunger that comes with that is horrid. While I will never be an advocate for a diet plan, I do appreciate that you have found something that you're happy with, and this conversation did highlight that there are some positive parts of the plan. My concern for you is always the question of why you are driven to lose weight, and also for the rebound weight gain. But all I can do is share the information and hope some of it resonates.     I do sw but I swaps stuff and don’t do without anthing and ask questions about what you can eat is a plan I Agee that all the consulting are helpful if there is a big class you get missed out when you want to know something 🐝🐝

      The fact that you are making swaps shows that it isn't a sustainable plan when followed correctly. And yes, big classes often mean you can't get the time you need.

    All I can hear is “ well to be fair……. . I’ve never been to SW but I lost 9st calorie counting at home during the pandemic. From what I hear it seems all the vitriol towards SW seems unfounded . Is it because these ladies didn’t loose the weight they wanted? Or felt the beans must be spilled for some reason? I’m genuinely confused. The only thing that may be lacking is more psychology behind the plan ?

      Quite the opposite for myself and Sue. We did lose considerable weight, multiple times over, and regained it all back and more. This is far from vitriol. It was intended to be a fair conversation, and there are actually several times where Sue defends slimming world. But it cannot be ignored that dieting is harmful to the body in most cases, and given that slimming world is a calorie restriction diet this is what we are highlighting. What is lacking is nutritional training for the consultants, education for members on how to eat for their own bodies and not blindly following a plan, the removal of the link between food and exercise..... so much needs to be improved in order to look after their members better.

    I think from someone who was a sw customer and an ex consultant we are guilty of giving them a bad rap when not deserved. Customers need to use your common sense. Come on they don't fail us. I have also done ww and that's so restrictive. How about we look at ourselves and say hey don't always look for someone else to blame. I have put my weight back on but honestly I don't blame sw.

      This isn't about looking for someone to blame. I actually think that both parts were a balanced discussion on where they do wrong by us, but also where they get it right. However, whichever way you look at it, weight gain after dieting is caused by the dieting. And diet companies feed off that, and wait for their members to come back and try the same nonsense over and over again. This isn't specifically about SW alone, this is about all diet companies, and it's important to shine a light on where they are problematic.

    I was a WW coach for 2 years - it's a very odd role in a lot of ways and I found it very conflicting.

      I think that's exactly what Sue was saying made her quit in the end. She wanted to help people and could see the damage that it was doing.

      Exactly why I did not accept a position with WW here in NY. I could never see myself sending an underlying message of failure to people who paid for a plan for many years and never got to goal. The underlying message is that it's their fault that they haven't lost. I do calorie count. It is a tool. I do not let it run my life. I am 63 and just about at my ideal weight. I am overall healthy and very fortunate. Ty for this video!

    That's what the syns are for - just syn the cheese. Everyone doesn't eat cheese either! Nothing is banned.

      I don't know what this comment is referring to but do take a look at syns and the 'healthy extras' a different way. If you have a condition that requires more calcium for example, syns are very worrying. The amount of cheese you get in a sw portion is tiny, and then you can't have milk or anything else in that day, unless you syn them. But then if you syn them because you need the calcium intake (for example) you are taking away from the other food and drink that you might have liked to have eaten that day, like some chocolate, or maybe a glass of orange juice, or maybe wine? It may be the case that nothing is banned, but there's always restriction, and it's the restriction that is problematic both physically and mentally.

    I totally disagree again I've done slimming-world before but this time the psychology of it is a lot better now than before. When it used to be red/ green day that was old school, but now you can adapt your plan with products on the general market now.
    What your saying about setting targets at say what they were when you got married, i know that is no longer a reality, my target now is different now than when i was 8,110 + older

      The psychology of it is now CLEVERER than it was before - they still go no way to helping you understand why you eat what they are asking you to (other than perhaps the protein, dairy and fibre) and they still don't help with the mental side of eating. They just don't. Red and green was ridiculous, and I'm so glad that's gone, but the newer plans simply encourage you to pile your plate up with free food. They teach nothing of food satisfaction, hunger and fullness, and the effects of restriction - syns I'm looking at you!
      Targets - you've taken what we have said about someone taking their weight at marriage and wanting to set that as a target and blanket applied that to every member. That's not what we said. We said that you get to set your own target, even if it's unrealistic. And that much is true. You can.
      You have watched this with a view that is totally defensive of slimming world and only heard the negatives that we pointed out - all of which are valid. However, our conversation was balanced and we did say where they did things that looked after their members too. I'm sorry you didn't watch this from a more unbiased perspective and see that.

      I think it goes one of two ways - you either love it and want to be in the heart of it, or don't enjoy it at all. I only ever enjoyed it when I was 'doing well'!!

      Unfortunately it isn't a load of rubbish. You just unfortunately don't know that, and are clearly refusing to learn anything different. I'm sorry that you are being so closed minded about this. I published this to help people to learn more about the issues with dieting.
