I think thee 996 is superior. Granted the 997 is more beautiful and has better everything. But comparing against contemporary cars, the 996 is by far the one. Comparing a 997.2 vs 996 is not fair as there is a decade of engineering improvements. But compare the 996 vs any other car available in 1999 and you will see it. Otherwise the newest model will always surpass the 996, 997, etc.
