- Join us on our magnificent Coast Starlight railway odyssey … with WOW views of the Californian and Oregon pacific coast.
We discuss whether it’s worth the price of a first class ticket by showing you round our sleeper cabin and taking you right through the train showing the features such as the lounge, viewing coach and dinning carriage.
We met our wonderful train neighbour Marjorie who was great company and a very interesting person to spend time with.
We let you know whether we would recommend this journey and discuss some of the other passenger options available.

It was wonderful. We live in Missouri and had finished an Alaskan cruise. EB views were spectacular, attendants wonderful. Best Amtrak trip yet. Relaxing and just realize it will be selayed

When we did the Empire Builder this summer, one sister next to us wanted her tea so she got a kettle and left it for her sister when she left.

You can also use the bigger public shower for sleeper passengers on the first floor of any sleeper car.

@@pegandrobsgameforadventure The first floor shower has a small changing room and shower amenities. The actual shower is the same size, but without the toilet stuff.

Paying $1450 for a full bedroom for two people for only one night is a foolish waste of money. Your train also had something called a "roomette," which would have been smaller, but would have contained an upper bunk and a lower bunk. You would have had to use the bathrooms and shower in the hallway, but you would have gotten the same dining car meals. And the cost would have been 1/2 of what you paid for the bedroom. Of course, that is too expensive as well, and the smart travelers who can sleep in a seat over one night know that the best value by far is booking a (very comfortable) coach seat. Bring some snacks and buy whatever else you need to eat from the cafe, and spend some time in the observation car with the other real travelers.

Thank you for commenting. We really did think long and hard about whether the price was worth it. We had decided to do it. Then rethought, then decided if we were only there once we might regret not going for it. I did a lot of overnight buses and trains in my 20s but find it a little harder to do in my 60s. We appreciate it isn’t for everyone but we made our savings elsewhere and enjoyed the ride.
