6th grade math teacher here. We've been working on this and my teammate and I hate trying to teach the modeling version of it. This may be the best way I have seen to do the modeling. Thanks, Mr. J!
Could you make a video that gives an example of a fraction quotient that is less than one and not involving whole numbers? For example: 5/7 divided by 13/8. Using the area model.
This is the most confusing thing in math I have veer seen. My school years were put of the US, I learned math un general in a whole different way, even simple division is different. Once I moved to the States and was able to go to college (12 years after graduating HS) I started with college algebra and most of the stuff i had already seen in 9th grade and above. I was always finishing first and my professor had me show him my work a few times, then he told me he also learned the same way (he was from Ethiopia) but that the "American way" tends to add too many unnecessary steps 😏
This is so broken I don't think the people teaching it even know what they are really doing. They are literally just finding a most common denominator and then dividing the numerators.
Can you tell us the limitation of such operation? I made up one situation that I can't come up with an answer using your method (4/7) / (3/4). However, I can get the anser using my method: (4/7) x (4/3) = 16/21 which is < 1.
It works acc, just that he didn't explain it. So the thing is, if u realize that the amount of the shaded part in the second square is greater than the amount of the shaded part in the first square, the shaded part of the first square becomes your numerator, and the shaded part of the second square becomes your denominator
I know this is a year old comment, but someone else might also have this question. What helped me pay attention to this principle was the fact that sometimes I might have to divide a partial of something up into even smaller partial pieces-say, dividing leftover slices of pizza up among friends evenly. (I like pizza and fairness, so this is what worked best for me. I’m sure everyone else can find less cliche ways to frame the situation.)
i honestly feel like an idiot because no matter how many times this is explained, i understand the formula but conceptualizing it makes zero sense to me whatsoever. like i really just dont get it atp

I have a math test coming up on this topic, now i fell like im ready to ace it, thanks Mr J
did you ace it?
@@xy.han4 yup
Im not sure how others are taught, but using one square of an area model like you'd do with multiplication does the job.
I was legit soo confused, but this halped a lot

@14spiderman Why not? I don’t see the problem. It’s grammatically correct to start sentences with conjunctions.
@@shaikhaali7447 What do you mean? You can only start a sentence with a ` and ` if its a subordinate clause.
I love you Mr.J

My second question is what makes a fraction dividing by another fraction meaningful or useful? Is there any application of such operation in practise?
Yes imagine u have 3 and half kg(3, 1/2 kg) of Tomato In one bag you have to repack then in packs of quarter kg I.e 1/4 kg .. so ?

What about when u have a mix number divide by a fraction. Do u just make it into aj imprper fraction and then do yhe keep flip method thing?
