  • Remembering the life of Nancy Wright. A beautiful soul who dedicated her life to the Anglican Church.
She lived an amazing life having lived in 3 countries and visiting others. She cared for her mother as well as sacrificed for everyone else.
A minister’s daughter who even met royalty. Sadly in 2015 she was diagnosed with mild dementia and ended up losing everything she worked so hard for.
I was blessed when she ended up in Greenwoods Elder Care on Salt Spring Island so I could remain in her life until the end. Her sister was my mother, who passed when I was 11. My Aunt taught me to accept all for who they are, that no one is perfect enough to judge outside of God.
Nancy lived far beyond what was expected and loved with her whole heart until the very end. She loved me and believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. I became the person I am today because of her belief in me.
Dementia is an awful disease but just because someone has dementia doesn’t mean they are disposable. It doesn’t mean you just forget them or take away the things or people they love. There are still so many memories and moments that matter and so much love they can give. Nancy still blew kisses and shared love to the end. she still recognized photos of her dad even when she didn’t recognize anyone else. She loved to look at photos, art and blow kisses.
Her life had meaning and should not ever be forgotten.
Thank you to Greenwood’s Elder care for helping me stay in my beloved Aunt’s life until the end… especially Erica, Nikki and Anica.
Thank you to retired Rev. John Stetson and the Anglican Parish of Salt Spring Island who prayed for Auntie, gave her the Sacrament and visited with her. Thank you Dr. Boyd who filled me in at the start of her dementia journey while others tried to only control.
One of my Aunt’s favorite prayers was “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

My heart is broken but in the words of my Aunt “ We all go safety home”. I know she is “ Home” now but I will miss her everyday until we meet again.
