A fear of time running out.” ― Mitch Albom, The Time Keeper
To be fair though, perhaps the ability of timekeeping is what gave humanity the desire to forge that time, and make the most of it, creating monumental cities and other relics. Yes, humans fear time running out, but that is what causes them to develop.
you've really inspired me and out done yourself. I usually used to watch vsauce 1 & 3 but I never took the time to truly enjoy your content. Thank you.
Because this video was made, because he was talked about, because it was put in a place that has the potential to last far beyond our own lives (the internet) in a way you gave Edward Page Michel immortality and the ability to jump to the future. You spoke of his works that were being forgotten and now over a million people can carry that thought of him on.
Just imagine a Time Fridge. Instead of making food colder to refrigerate them, a time fridge would freeze time to keep the food fresh. Just imagine being able to store some food in a time fridge and then 5 weeks later you wanted to eat it. It would be in the exact same state from 5 weeks ago. Also frozen food will no longer exist! Everything will be fresh!
It would be ideal if we could view the past without travelling there. Just the ability to see things that were never recorded would change everything about how we view history.
Yeah, I hear you man. I like to be awake for about 20 hours and sleep for 10 to 12... but unfortunately for me a day isn't 30 to 32 hours long so it fucks me up on a regular basis.
Eight hours of sleep is artificial. I function best with 10 hours. My husband functions best with 6 hours. My father 4 hours. My sister 7. I don't think sleep is designed to be the same for everyone.
Certainly not. The perfect amount of sleep for individuals of a populations (measured in reported wellbeing) is a Bell curve centered around 7h. So while 4 and 10 are definitely among the outliers, there are still people that function better with these amounts of sleep.
What you eat and when you eat also change the time of sleep needed, people know that snaking during late hours keeps you from sleeping, a vegan diet makes you more sleepy and if you dine early you will wake up earlier for breakfast, drinking habbits also influence sleep. The 8 hours ordeal is usually because you get hungry after 10ish hours even if you are sleeping, or else you find the need to pee.
And it's at this point when I fully realize UA-cam's comment section holds nothing related to the video in question but calls for attention and insignificant votes, mentions of the creator's upload schedule and crass jokes about being early. This site certainly needs a time machine.
Or it may cause a stable time loop. What if the reason the footage was missing at all in the first place was because a time traveler stole them to keep them from being lost?
I suppose we could keep vigil at the Viliers house loading bay and wait for them to set the overseas episodes out for junking, but there are some like The Feast of Steven and Mission to the Unknown that were never sent overseas and some like Fury from the Deep that never had episodes returned from overseas. We'd also have to deal with the law. Plugging up a modern television and recording it just seems like a simpler, easier, and more reliable method. Besides, you might not even be able to find the episodes in the BBC warehouse considering how terrible the organization was. You could sift through film cans for hours and find maybe one serial.
Kevins videos always fill me with the oddest mix of emotions that no one else does. Optimism and happiness mixed with feeling small yet accomplished and ending on gratitude and respect for the little humans who have done so much. I don't have the right words for it, but it's beautiful. Every time.
Kathie Dart Oh.. Well anytime after whatever time on 1985 that you are thinking about is its future. Hard to know what you mean when you "only" said "look back on the future.".
“The release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking ... the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker." - Albert Einstein Even Einstein knew what humans find so endearingly valuable and powerful...
i hate eye contact and never look people in the eye when talking. i usually look at their mouth or nose. idk, it just makes me feel funny so i avoid it.
not at all its just strange to me. you know if 2 people look into each other's eyes for a few minutes their heartbeats will synchronize. they say the eyes are the windows to the soul and all that. its just wierd
ronnie ssebaggala I have a hard time looking people in the eye. And there is this certain sensation I get when I look at someones eye's and we are both very aware that we are staring at each other and it becomes an awkward experience. It's so strange. I also want to know if eye contact is apart of human nature or is it a social construct that we made up to show confidence, seriousness, assertivness, etc.
I like how you were happy for him that he got a sponsorship, unlike most people in the comments who just get annoyed because of a 2-second shout-out or less. It's refreshing.
Well as long as it isn't forcesd it's generally a good thing . Sponsorships for shows are great , because they don't have to connect to the advertised material that much , and the requirements are smaller . Thanks for thinking logically .
This is assuming your perception of time is the complete truth. When trying to understand or even master time, It is important to see different ways we can interact with it. Also how time can interact with us. It is deeply important to acknowledge the change that happens in the flow of events in time outside of your perspective and current understanding of it. For you as a human you may say your flow of time has not changed. This is because it is such a brief time. i just love this channel, it fills a small hole in my soul that yearns for knowledge. more often than not i come to youtube to learn something new or just broaden my horizons and this is a good place to do it, thanks.
Wouldn't it be awesome if this videos were a story? Like, Jake is stuck in time due to Kevin's malfunctioning time machine and Michael has either something to do with Jake getting stuck in time or will save Jake from his loop I really love the idea
if anyone does make a time machine (and if going to the past isn't immediately forbidden), you should remember to go to Steven Hawking's birthday party the 28th of June in 2009 (if you haven't heard of it, the day after his birthday he released the invitation so that only time traveller's could attend, in an attempt to prove time travel would one day be possible) Edward Page Mitchel, that's a name worth remembering, every sci-fi movie, comic book story, and even some real science stemming from his concepts were inspired by his work. We owe it to this man to let him have a remembered place in history
I am a time traveler. I've been doing it my entire life. I started out and the very end of 1969 and now it's already 2017. I have traveled nearly 48 years through time.
Make sure to go to the future to talk to yourself in the future so you know how you ended up taking over the world, so then you can return to the current day and know how to take over the world.
+speedy01247 wont that alter the future if he comes to his past to tell him what to do ? cause in the future he already have taken iover the world without being told what to do so if you change that in the past then the future is altered and doomed to fail ! Time-glitching will cause a loop of damnation! dont ask me how i know! just believe me
Well all you have to do to avoid that is go back in time anyways. So if my future self brings back the cure for cancer, that means that since it was solved, he wouldn't bring it back. BUT if he brings it back anyways then we're good.
That Edward Page Mitchell story got me sobbing at 5am.The fact that a man who contributed everything to a genre and a medium he loved only to be entirely forgotten by those whose concepts fuel their beloved stories is... really sad. But in a way, also happy. Sure, in a hundred years' time nobody might remember who I was, but if my deeds and my passions left a mark on the world that still drives people to be better, it's still worth it. Sure, I'll be forgotten, but it's not like I'll never have existed.
I like this quote "proof alone that we have the ability to change the future even if no one knows who we are" for some reason that speaks to me. It says to me that no matter how small or insignificant either me or someone else may feel we all have the power to do great things. We just need to get out there and do it!
Whenever I go to sleep I always see things that happen in the next week but I don’t remember them until it actually happens and I’m like hmm didn’t this already happen?
Yes it’s weird because I’m really confused when the event happens wether it’s just the same image or like I had some sort of dream it wasn’t really a dream more of a photo of a hotel in London that I had never seen before and a week later my family went to the exact hotel in london
JoshDoesStuff yea. I’ll just have dreams and then sometime in the future, in reality(not specified when) I’ll just be doing something normally a little different of a event will happen and then(click). I think back to the dream and remember. Sometimes I completely remember the dream. Other times I won’t remember but I’ll have the feeling that I’ve done it before
You guys at Vsauce need to stop being so amazing in your presentations. I love watching your videos, but I can only handle having my mind blown so many times in succession.
I'm seriously brought to tears, as a writer and a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy. thank you vsauce, for this commemorative piece of Edward Page Mitchell
I came to check this video out after reading "The Clock That Went Backward" I got in my Curiosity Box. Thanks so much for making these stories available to us.
udin Not really. They all discuss things, but each does something different. Vsauce is long videos on whatever topic, Vsauce2 is shorter videos and Mind Blow, and Vsauce3 is slugger shorter videos on more pop culture things.
The legacy of people like Mitchel is the reason why I prefer the idea of publishing works anonymously. To me, it's the good deeds and works of the individual that should go down in history and be admired, rather than the individual themselves. I don't think it really matters who did it, especially when we can't possibly have a meaningful relationship with that person.
That was an amazing video - isn't it heartbreaking that for 762 people who pressed thumbs down, it was because they have not been in the frequency of love, imagination and wonder since it was taken from them by people who were supposed to love them not destroy their dreams. They time travelled back to the point in time where there innocence was dashed - that is why they pressed thumbs down. If you pressed thumbs down, you were hurt by evolution and the power goes to those who let go of the hurt and grow once more with strength. The waves are different now - the same things that happened in the past stop as soon as you say "no more".
God damn it, Kevin stop being so amazing at talking about people we don't know and humanising them for your audience to understand, in the context of your topic and narrative. I only have so many tears to shed! You're easily becoming my favorite Vsauce. (Sorry Jake/Michael, you're both great still :D)
Igor Freitas i saw a costume once called "everyone is afraid of comic sans" it was a sign saying abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ in comic sans
I believe it came from a fake Facebook maker, one that made fake links, and the creator of Vsauce just kept resetting until he found something interesting: Vsauce.
I'm already a time traveler, moving forward at a pace of 1 second per second
If you're not moving yes, but you're always moving so...
That's the only way we should do it bro.
cute
PossibleTange Relative to what? You can also say we are always stationary.

such and amazing quote
beautiful episode Kevin

The Light of Other Days or something like that.
Read time riders by Alex scarrow
Dude that's what I was often thinking about
wow, really? did you just find this out?
If we used my circadian rhythm for timing, we'd sleep for 20 hours per day
Sounds amaaaaaaaazing
That's just not true at all.
well it depends...

Comment section was just as bad back in 2009 & 2010, but the content was definitely much more memorable and had something to it....
Michael, you got until 12am to make this the greatest day in science of the 21st century.

Hey, if you ever invent a time machine make sure you go back and record the missing Doctor Who episodes.
Patrick Mcgann Good idea
or save them from the bcc archive :D
Matthew Brough Eh...that would get us into paradox situations and it's best to avoid those if at all possible.
Or it may cause a stable time loop. What if the reason the footage was missing at all in the first place was because a time traveler stole them to keep them from being lost?

Vsauce 2 and 3 upload about time on the same day and Lemino uploads Space part 7! 'Tis a good day for UA-cam
You got that right!
Professor UA-cam yep it is a historic time
It's not a coincidence.

This video made me so nostalgic, but for what? I'm 23
Back to the future? :D
It feels weird to look back on the future.
Kathie Dart
Do you mean the movie? Back *to* the future?
I meant looking back on 1985's future, 2015.
Kathie Dart
Oh..
Well anytime after whatever time on 1985 that you are thinking about is its future. Hard to know what you mean when you "only" said "look back on the future.".

Make a video on eye contact
i hate eye contact and never look people in the eye when talking. i usually look at their mouth or nose. idk, it just makes me feel funny so i avoid it.

Just responding cause no one has in a 2 years
Sernin YT true
It would be cool if your time machine appeared in Jake's video...
It Did it was on the Roof of the house you just couldn't see it.
What time in the video?
you sir, are a liar. it is very pitiful you have to lie, especially on the internet... did someone beat you and make you a pathological liar?
Pretty cool that you got a sponsored episode !

Quinn this is a good sponcership in truth. It doesn't feel forced or irrelevant like alot of them
Kevin, this was so good! I'm really curious about that book now. Wonderful presentation.
What if time travel was so wide spread that your house could exist in one point in time, and your work could exist in another?
It is unless you work from home.
Sorry that I'm 9,000 years late boss I got stuck in my house timeline
...that's a really freaking good short story idea.
But you aren't really changing the future if you're part of history...
You're just a cause for the future we will have.
Like everyone else.
Makes sense if you think about. Once the Universe began, it already ended... something I heard from someone else.

But we have quantum mechanic, and time travel can be absolutly different that we know. So "Qui vivra verra"

Whenever I'm stressed from college I cry at this kind of videos. That's when I realize it's been a long journey, but just the beginning of my life.

I came here to ask the same question!
Usually I don't remember when I'm dreaming the future but when I have a example to show I can remember again
6:50 i fucking love this song, it makes everything you say amazing somehow
It's Shona by Jake Chudnow.
And as always, awesome work Kevin!
Whats the song at 00:52 ?
Darude sandstorm
Proof we have the ability to change the future, even if no one knows who we are. I love that.
LINK TO THE MUSIC TRACK AT THE END PLEASE...

Man, you are good at creating some fantastic videos.
So Vsauce2 is pretty much Vsauce1 with a bigger editing budget? I'm in.
udin Not really. They all discuss things, but each does something different. Vsauce is long videos on whatever topic, Vsauce2 is shorter videos and Mind Blow, and Vsauce3 is slugger shorter videos on more pop culture things.
Vsuace 3 budget is movie level then
Actually it's not.
AmorthOfficial Bad day?
The legacy of people like Mitchel is the reason why I prefer the idea of publishing works anonymously. To me, it's the good deeds and works of the individual that should go down in history and be admired, rather than the individual themselves. I don't think it really matters who did it, especially when we can't possibly have a meaningful relationship with that person.
If you did everything right, no one will be sure you did anything at all.
Thanks to your video, I now know of, and appreciate, Edward Page Mitchell's contributions to literature. Well done.
Wasn’t this video called Chronesthesia? Why change it after almost 3 years?
One of your best videos in a long time!
Now that's a real vsauce video!
The waves are different now - the same things that happened in the past stop as soon as you say "no more".
and im on a binge rerun of doctor who. Coincidence?
Yes.
People complain about Tesla not being recognised, but Edward Page Mitchell defined most of our futuristic fantasies. Awesome
But since you just told 3.7 million people about the crystal man.....will it be forgotten?
So far, 56.6k people, actually.
3.7 million subs* my bad.
Jacob Hobbs ah.
God damn it, Kevin stop being so amazing at talking about people we don't know and humanising them for your audience to understand, in the context of your topic and narrative. I only have so many tears to shed!
You're easily becoming my favorite Vsauce. (Sorry Jake/Michael, you're both great still :D)
you are cool
jk ur dumb
WilliamLordPiggeh :( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks
Your reasoning at the end feels quite empowering. Thank you!
>Talks about the history of telling time.
>Does not talk about the Mayan civilization.
I only feel pain.
You gave me chills Kevin. Well done.
2:48 Comic Sans, aaaaaaaaaa
Igor Freitas i saw a costume once called "everyone is afraid of comic sans"
it was a sign saying abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvxyz
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
in comic sans
Terrifying indeed
That's... not Comic Sans.
Yes it is. It's not in the upper boxes, it's what's written in white below each moon phase.
Igor Freitas
Ah, so it is. Watching in 480p = Comic Sans looking like Arial.
And as always, thanks for creating.
i am starting to like vsauce2 more than vsauce.
same, michael is too obsessed with math, it's just confusing
"I am not scared of death.
I am scared of time."
what does Vsauce stand for?
Harambe
I think it originated from a random name generator
I believe it came from a fake Facebook maker, one that made fake links, and the creator of Vsauce just kept resetting until he found something interesting: Vsauce.
Nothing. It was just randomly generated
ok kinda kinda anti-climactic but thanks lol
Inspiring. Thanks for your work, Kevin, you send lovely ripples through time and I am thankful that I am tuned into your frequency :-)
