  • This is a sponsored video featuring the Sky Blue Long Range Outdoor FM antenna from Ness Electronics. It features a massive 138" boom making it one of the strongest FM antennas out the market. The antenna may also work as a low VHF antenna for RF channels 5 and 6 since they are adjacent to the FM band.

I agree with you. An FM antenna is only worth it if there's decent radio stations that can be picked up in a given area. They're all trash by me but I'm sure other areas have stuff worth listening to.

@@AntennaManin my area the FM is just about as bad as the MW band is here. And more local stations are abandoning their old music formats for various talk formats which is a waste of FM bandwidth! And there’s truly no variety across the entire FM dial.

I would like if you did reviews of stereo antennas and how-to vids like you do tv antennae. When I bought my range experts 1500 based on your recommendation I picked up an FM rooftop antenna for like $20 on Amazon and it's been awesome. I'd like to see what better options are out there and I think others would love to see the reviews as well.

My dad had a 12ft paralog FM antenna years ago on a rotor up 20 ft. We had a flat terrain with no interference. Fantastic product when you're in the fringe and need to pick up distance stations well. Worked like a champ.
But it doesn't work well in my current location with many local transmitters. I wanted good reception from a station 70mi away. The big antenna, even at 30 ft, didn't work because of signal overload by local stations. I got one of those cheap S shaped antennas and walked around my yard and found one area, where the station came in noise free. I mounted it on a small pole, 3ft elevation where the signal was the strongest. It was a great signal for years!!
It worked there ONLY because I have many 100 ft. pine trees which CAN reflect signals from higher levels right down into my yard! IF you have tall trees between you and the station try to find a reflected signal with a small antenna by just roaming around your yard before spending a lot of money on a big antenna. Back when I was in a dorm, I was one of the few students to pick up stations 110 mi away fairly well. Many years later I realized I was getting a signal bounced from the top of a high water tower. My dorm room was in the RIGHT spot for that reflection! I had to run coax to the other students that were at the same elevation, but couldn't get the stations.
I use the same trick for a TV station I enjoy that also comes from 70 mi away. My TV antenna for that station is roughly 10 ft high and positioned for a reflected signal from a distant tree. It gave me solid reception for many years until one day the tree was chopped down! I heard the chain saws on the next street and as they removed the tree, the signal disappeared.
I did another survey of my yard and found another strong signal from another tree that provides 99% perfect reception today. This technique ONLY works if you have trees or other high objects between you and the station you're trying to receive.
No trees? No water towers? Then get your antenna really high. Height has a huge effect. A $20 antenna at 50ft may actually work better than a $200 antenna at 20 ft, and the $200 antenna may also be easily overloaded by local stations.
But if you have trees or tall objects, take some time and patience to see if you can find a reflected signal at ground level with a cheap antenna. You might be VERY surprised.

Great info! It's not just size but location. This gives me hope to keep trying to receive a station 100 miles away. I wonder if walking around with a portable radio would help me find a good spot?

I have the same radio tuner. It will do very well, provided you don't get overload from local stations, like in a city. Overload is a huge problem for me but the Sangean does quite well using with a small antenna in my yard capturing signals reflected from the tops of the trees. It will depend on your location.

If you have SirusXM in your car the audio quality is awful most stations sound like a 80kbps MP3 no joke. The Best sounding station is Classic Vinyl. What I would do is run all the music stations at 160kbps or 192kbps AAC and all the talk new sports 128kbps AAC all station would run Stereo Tool with good settings. Only like 5 sports are true 24/7 most of the station just run a message looped saying please tune in later I would turn off all these station when they are not being used to improved the quality of the rest of the stations.

@@DJboutit2the problem I see is lots of redundancy. There’s like 30 rock stations and many of the same songs play on nearly all of them. Compare that to Country music, which has 12 stations that many of them at any given time are not playing country music. They are stations that have a celebrity host and they are playing his or her favorite tunes across all genres. Add commercials (which were never supposed to happen) and the lineup is now terrible. I listened merely for the Howard Stern channels since the beginning m. But now, Howard is just merely a disappointing, bitter old man that removed most of the entertainment he used to have. And now the add 14 channels of Spanish language content, despite the fact that SiriusXM isn’t even available in Latin America. It’s safe to say I quit paying for the nonsense.

Back in 1978 I bought Radio Shack's 10 element FM yagi. Growing up on the shore of Lake Erie, 17 miles west of downtown Cleveland, I would experience tropospheric ducting across the water in warm weather months. When conditions were right Detroit would boom in. Sometimes Buffalo and even Toronto FM. That about 200 miles. I would say when the conditions were not enhanced (most of the time) it was rock solid 75+ miles on your better class B FM stations. Unfortunately, that part of the country has no class C stations. It was too band crowded for class C.

If you are going for good long range on FM radio mount the antenna vertical not horizontal since many FM radio stations concentrate on vertical polarity for mobile reception not horizontal polarity like they once did back in the 60's 70's and early 80's. In some cases you may get a very good signal on vertical polarity but nothing at all on horizontal polarity with some radio stations.

@@AntennaMan I got into FM reception back in 2019.
The first antenna was an FM dipole it could be mounted both horizontal and vertical. I mounted it exactly like a TV antenna. It only performed great on strong FM stations, and performed poor on medium signal stations, on low signal stations I couldn't receive them at all. When I mounted it vertical it was a major suprise it performed great on both strong and medium signal stations and I could listen to them in Stereo, and some low signal stations could be listened in Mono.
The next antenna that I tested was a 3 element Yagi FM antenna same situation like the dipole FM antenna. The diference was that some low signal stations could be listened in Stereo and other that couldn't be received with I dipol, I could receive them with the 3 element antenna and in Mono. Mounted like a TV antenna it performed poor so it is better to mount it vertically.
The last antenna that I tested is a 5 element FM antenna, with that antenna you could receive stations outside the coverage and could listen in Mono or Stereo depending how far are the transmitters.
This is my personal experience, but in Europe FM will soon be History since DAB+ will take over radio but this will happen after 2026. And DAB+ while it has major advantages over FM and is superior than HD Radio you can fit more than 4 channels on a single frequency. DAB+ us VHF High Band and if your like me interested in DX reception is not as easy as FM DX-ing.

You would connect this antenna to a home stereo with a 75ohm coax connection. Most boomboxes and radios from the store don't have a separate antenna input so this antenna isn't best for that. The value of FM definitely depends on the area. Where I live, it's mostly trash. AM is basically on life support.

I mentioned that this is a sponsored video. As a content creator, I have every right to take sponsorships like these which include ad integrations or commercials. I actually deny probably 99% of sponsor requests because I want to keep my videos relevant to antennas and cord cutting. The overwhelming majority of comments on this video praise it because they weren't aware of this excellent long range FM antenna. As for reviewing the antenna - I have no way to do so because I don't own a stereo receiver with coax input nor do I have any other antennas to compare it to. That being said, like all antennas, size matters, and this FM antenna will outperform any smaller antenna on the market.
