Part 2 of a longer series, surely? You'll have to get him back because the craic is great. When 3 old pals get together, it's lovely to hear all the memories come out. The hoots of laughter at the mention of someone's name, who you don't even know but you're laughing along going , That's classic Birchy!
The part of the discussion about Time Out and listings magazines reminded me of The List Magazine, which was central Scotland's equivalent magazine in the 1990's, I found out about so many gigs from there and loved many of the record reviews, especially those of Tom Morton. I don't think it exists in print any longer, but it may still be online. I enjoyed hearing Neil talking about working with Dusty too, it would have been wonderful to hear more about that, it was such an enjoyable interview.
Wonderful conversation. Well done! I will echo the bit about the music press, and journalism generally. I stopped reading record reviews round 2000 and moe than a year back cancelled my subscription to The Guardian because of their 'interviews' reminded me of the worst of the NME. Happily, the independent podcasts and UA-cam channels are stepping up with some great work. Neil saying something like the artistic has gone from songwriting is on the whole spot on. Again, I turn to the independent musicians on Bandcamp for the artistry. Thank you for this!
I absolutely love this podcast and I’m delighted when a new episode is released. I have just listened to the the new Hollywood Babylon episode and Mark called Joe Rogan far right. For goodness sake man are you kidding. Is anyone who questions anything at all or sits on the fence far right ?
To be fair just because a fellow likes eating and fighting more than reading and writing - And talks about ghosts and drugs for a living doesn’t mean he isn’t a wolf 🐺 n sheep’s clothing.
Mark and David are quintessential champagne socialists. They belong to the Fleet Street cocktail party set. There's a famous story which perfectly sums up just the kind of people Mark and David are: New York Times movie critic Pauline Kael was shocked and stunned by Richard Nixon's landslide victory in 1972. She was overheard saying, "But everyone I know voted for McGovern!!".
This conversation is a total treat. I was a deejay in a gay nightclub in San Diego in the 1980s and was all over West End Girls, the Bobby Orlando version, well before it was re-recorded and re-released in the UK. I've been a fan of Pet Shop Boys ever since. Now they are pop legends!
It's a fantastic conversation, something I've wanted to hear for decades & decades...Hep, Mark & Neil talking Smash Hits...❤️ I just love hearing Neil still calling his old workmates by their nicknames, Birchy & Scoffer...! 🤣👌😁
Do you guys remember the Shop just before the bridge in Camden Town were most of us got wooden high heeled boots some with mister freedom stars?..and of course the Kenmarket, the number 31 Bus was a connection to portobello road on to camden market..
@spongerubbertowerGosh - the way I voice this when reading it is uncharacteristic of this channel. If you’re saying you have great stories to share that’s good. We’re here and we’re listening.

The two parts of this conversation are superbly entertaining - sincere thanks to all three people taking part.

Wow! So glad i found this. Neil is as charming as ever and, despite monumental success, still remains a fan
Thank you ❤

Had to look up Bobby O and 'I'm so hot for you' - It sounds like 'Don't you want me baby' by the Human League but not as good.

@spongerubbertower we do reply as much as we can - impossible to respond to all comments, though! And I read them all. ~ Alex
