"I really don't like riding with things in my pockets." You are NOT alone on that. I can't do it either. Even with just a few things in my jersey pockets, I feel that weight in my lower back. I salute those who can jam their pockets full of stuff and not suffer but I'm not one of them.
Nice. I also like to carry some toilet paper along with the lighter just in case I need a little (dry) combustion material in a pinch. Great informative videos!
The crankbrothers f15 multitool has a chain tool and spoke wrenches built in so you would only have to carry that tool instead of the 3 separate tools.
Really nice review, I particularly like your frame bag thorough explanation, as well as your personal items that you store in them. ______ I'm currently cycling through Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and listening to a lot of UA-cam videos on bicycle packing. Yours was good and informative and your voice came across clearly.
Nice video. Certainly has helped me. Do you happen to have a list of those items in the bag? I keep watching it over to cover them all. Thanks again, Paul
Agree 100%, I've toured tubeless since the times when only the short lifespan race tires existed. Installing new tires after the trips back then was still worth it lmao. I'm sticking with Vittorias now since they make most with tubeless beads now, most plush tires for the money and they roll well, good stuff for doing multi century rides.
When I bought the Apidura it didn't have mesh pockets, I just got the bontrager one which I think looks better anyway AND I don't like having stuff in my pocket I've had my phone fly out before which landed on the case side years ago, and few days ago I lost a bottle of cranberry juice.
Yeah, I was super bummed by that! I messaged multiple bike shops that carry them and they said it doesn't have it or just ignored me. I've mailed Apidura directly to see if the design has changed. If the design has changed then I can live with that but yeah, super bummed by the lack of mesh pockets :(
This is a nice video series. Have you ever had to use that Topeak chain tool? I thought it looked nice and compact, but reading the reviews, a lot of people complain that the allen key doesn't stay in place when using the chain tool.
As far as the pockets go, I will say that modern oversized phones seem to stretch jersey pouches. There are a few that I own that I wont store my phone or wallet in at this point.
Are you still on the fence about tubeless? I took the plunge and though it can be a hassle to get tires seated, once they are seated, they feel much more supple and have been very reliable.
Thanks for the comment I’m not on the fence however haven’t set any up yet I am running slicks with tubes now as in just on rollers but come spring I want to get a tire with some more tread either from WTB or Ultradynamico and set those up tubeless ! Excited to see the benefits
It depends, some tubeless tires are harsh from still having thick protected sidewalls. Go with less protected tires and just carry a heavy duty curved upholstery needle, little bit of thick outdoor thread, and tiny tube of super glue. Problem solved lol
Thanks for your review! How much fits into the bag? I'm thinking about buying this bag (size L) for daily commuting to change my entire clothing when arriving at Office after 25km of riding (shorts, socks, underwear, shirt,...). Fresh shoes and jacket will be at office
Great review! Is this bag the regular Backcountry 4.5l bag or is it the Backcountry mountain bike 4.5l bag (4.5l, medium)? I just recieved the regular 4.5l (medium) bag and it doesn't have the inner mesh pockets :(
Personally I like tubed in theory better because you can get higher pressures so more efficiency. I actually prefer my back tire bald so I can skid. Ik tubeless gets you better grip though
Higher pressures are less efficient over rough surfaces like beat up roads and coarse gravel. Same is true having tubes in the tires. Higher pressure and tubes make it harder for the tires to deform over the surface, along with make things hella rough on you.
This might be a weird question but you talked about space for 3 water bottles but I can only see 2 of them in the video + the frame bag. So do you mean in theory you have space for 3 water bottles or 2 water bottles + frame bag? Or can you add another one on the down tube?
To save even more weight (if thats your thing), you can use amazon kindle app on your phone and not need to lug around the kindle. However, then youre using the phone battery and need to recharge more often.
What kind of job do you have to be able to afford all these super high end items? Also is that a wedding ring on your finger? You don't seem to be in a serious relationship, just taking of on your bike like that.
The only really expensive thing is the frame bag, that brand is pricey. I prefer black and red, so went with Revelate years back, but just sew my own shit now lol. You can buy a couple yards of waterproof and breathable fabric plus a sewing machine for how much that frame bag costs lmao
How have I *NEVER* used empty water bottles as storage? You just blew my mind, dude!
That was a good suggestion, I remember the first time somebody told me to use my extra water bottle for that too.
Brings a lighter but no stove, cos he be blazing dat kush 😤🌿

Nicely done. Short and sweet. Refreshing. No bull.... I like it.
Sebastien Gagnon thanks Sebastian glad you enjoyed it!
Nice. I also like to carry some toilet paper along with the lighter just in case I need a little (dry) combustion material in a pinch. Great informative videos!
We are definitely thinking alike. I have almost exactly the same stuff in my frame bag.
The crankbrothers f15 multitool has a chain tool and spoke wrenches built in so you would only have to carry that tool instead of the 3 separate tools.
i too hate riding with things in my pockets. Stuff bounces around and I find that area get sweaty super fast
Spare rear mech hanger, they can be hard to source so a break can end your trip.
The gorilla tape trick is one I learned years ago from a backpacker, and it is indeed super useful and potentially a life saver!
Yes i've used it on broke tent poles and it got me through the last nights of a trip!

Thanks John eric ! Enjoy your trip !
Im going broke just watching this series.
Nice video. Certainly has helped me. Do you happen to have a list of those items in the bag? I keep watching it over to cover them all. Thanks again, Paul
Fully agreed. No stuff in pockets. Had phones and keys fly away too many time.
My goodness dude, tubeless is 100% the way to go. Any concerns you have about it aren't a big deal or anything you need to worry about.

You were ahead all us with the hand sanitizer

Hi Scott, Have been fortunate enough to not have to use it just yet. :/
As far as the pockets go, I will say that modern oversized phones seem to stretch jersey pouches. There are a few that I own that I wont store my phone or wallet in at this point.

I run cushcore and tubeless. Its amazing

WOuld you recommend getting the large size back? The frame has more space to acomodate large size? I have the kona rove dl

Hey, I'm new to getting into gravel bikes. Is your Kona Rove the aluminum frame model?
Hi Zephyr, The Kona I have is steal with carbon fork
On recent Gravel Ride, guy had a new Salsa Aluminum Bike, we swapped bikes for a while and I was soo reminded why I ride a steel Bike.

Why not tie the tire pump to the frame similar to your extra tubes?.
This might be a weird question but you talked about space for 3 water bottles but I can only see 2 of them in the video + the frame bag.
So do you mean in theory you have space for 3 water bottles or 2 water bottles + frame bag?
Or can you add another one on the down tube?
He has space for 3 bottles but his frame bag uses up one area for the third, so he only has two spots for water bottles.
you don't wear a jersey with rear pockets?
I see you also have a Surly Karate Monkey... does your Apidura frame bag fit that bike as well? Thanks.
Hi Ryan sorry for the late reply ! yes it does! that bag is very adaptable to any bike
👍👍👍
I would still run tubes but put sealant in the tubes it’s work for me
where is the link for your tools
which WTB are those and size thanks..
To save even more weight (if thats your thing), you can use amazon kindle app on your phone and not need to lug around the kindle. However, then youre using the phone battery and need to recharge more often.
Can you link your gear? :)
What brand is the front wire basket on your mountain bike?
#wokwithLan here. I want to follow your tips.
자전거도 이쁘고 가방들도 이쁘네요.
Are you riding the Kona rove st? Or the base model rove?
Kona Rove Ltd. ( steel frame carbon fork)
just a note about using an empty bottle as storage, use a bag or some form of liner otherwise the tools will rattle like crazy without one
Nice Kona
Thanks! I love how it rides. I love the steel frame and carbon fork combo!
@@JoshRomeroYT I'm getting the NRB DL in a few weeks!
