Compound Microscope: It consists of two converging lenses. The lens near the object is called objective and the lens near the eye is called eyepiece. The lenses are fitted at the end of a metal tube. The distance of the object from the objective can be adjusted by means of a rock and pinion arrangement.
Works: The object O to be magnified is placed just outside the principal focus of the objective so that its real image is formed on the other side of objective.The image forms beyond 2fo where fo is the focal length of the objective.The image due to the objective acts as the object for the eye piece. The position of the eyepiece is so adjusted to form the final image at the near point. The final image is virtual, inverted and magnified.
