I wish Lodge would make a dome lid with an adjustable vent/chimney as an accessory option for this. It would make this grill even more versatile as a camp site slow smoker.
You are exactly right.....I flat out called Lodge about this question and I got told the reason why they do not include a lid for the Sportsmans Grill is because of the amount of extra cost and time it would require to manufacture. The big increase in cost would decrease their sales, so Lodge decided not to do it.
I was thinking the same thing. and I thought the lid of a deep Turkey roasting pan could fit quite nicely. I'm going to give it a try when my sportsman arrives.
I have found that the Le Creuset oval grill pan works well. It is just a little smaller than the surface of the Sportsman's Grill. I found mine at a thrift store but they can be had on Ebay or elsewhere. Not a popular pan so doesn't command typical Le Creuset prices.
We had an old Sportsman grill when I was growing up. Pop sold it after buying a larger Weber charcoal grill. Sure do miss that old grill. The burgers and dogs tasted sooooo much better. Nice posting sir. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Just picked up a used Lodge grill off the local craigslist. Cleaning it up and reseasoning it now. Looking forward to putting it to use.
I bought my Sportsman about15 years ago and I'm not sure which of my kids will get it when I go sneakers up, but whoever gets it will be the lucky one.
At 9:00, "I just happen to have one." LOL. Another great video. Lodge was smart to give you a new one. It's unlikely they could have produced such a video.
I have the Lodge version of this "Sportsman" grill. It's down the basement and now I Got to Get it ! I have need of Electrolysis and Cast iron cook ware. This is the Right place for me. Greetings Mr. Rogers !
Wow!!! This is one of the Best Videos I've ever seen on You Tube!!!! Thanks A Million!!! I'm gonna get one of these Lodge cast iron grills and it's all Thanks to your superb presentation!!!!!
Great comparison! I just wanted to mention that we inherited my grandfather's BSR sportsman and I am guessing it's a little newer model than yours as it still has 4 legs, but it *does* have the sliding draft door and groove for it.
I want to compliment you for doing this video. I have heard about the original cooker and the company that made them. I'm a huge Lodge fan. So seeing the comparison between the two was extremely enjoyable. I have been wanting to purchase the Lodge version for many years, maybe this will finally be the year. In addition to the traditional foods that you would expect to be cooked on this wonderful design. I believe it would be truly wonderful to use for making "Smores" .
I found an original one at an antique store. Perfect condition. Came with the fish pan. We just love it. Use it all the time. I see collectors paying $125.00 for the fry pan. It cooks like a champ.
Omg , I want this lodge sportsman grill. I've been looking for a cast iron hibachi but haven't found one . This looks so much better and would probably perform better also.
Greetings from Australia! Just got myself a 2019 Sportsman Grill and very happy with it. The flavor it gives the meat is so much better than my gas BBQ. Thanks for the comparison of the old & the new.
If you want to see real all-american made quality, go check out FINEX, Smithey, or Field Cast Iron. You will N-E-V-E-R use any Lodge product ever again.
Excellent comparison! I have the new lodge sportsman grill, I didn't know about it's history. Excellent grill I love mine. BTW I saw on Lodges Facebook page the featured you, congratulations on that.
michael landry - Thanks Michael! Yeah, what Lodge did for me was a huge deal. I have loved their stuff for years and have not been shy about praising their products. That they noticed my body of work was a validation that I am headed in the right direction. Still kind of overwhelmed at the experience. I wouldn't mind working for them one day :)
My mom loves cooking with wood, however she goes through metal grills yearly. Got her this for mother's day. Perfect for her; portable, durable, cooks well. I got her some small birch/stainless steel/brass grill tools too... Completely portable. Flagstone on her picnic table and it's good to go
What great information. We just bought 2, PRIME sirloin steaks for this evenings dinner AND Walmart has this grill in stock. Guess what's cook'in tonight ? I / we really appreciate your efforts and depth of research. Plus, the videos are low key, relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Thank you !
I just got an old BSR grill, was all rusty too, but I just finished restoring it. Mine is much less pitted than yours and also came with a draft door. And has its bail handle. Plan to break it in this weekend 😋
Cast Iron Chaos - Thank you SO much. It was fun to make. As I unpacked the new grill, I thought it would be foolish not to record the differences while both grills were clean. You and I have the same rule about not buying pieces that we won't use. I am going to violate that with this piece :) I like the new grill so much that I will save to get a second one. My wife will use this before she uses my big charcoal grill. But it was funny - as I was making this video, I felt like I kind of had a 'responsibility' to make it. It is important that the history of things like this be recorded.
Thanks for the video Jeff, love my cast iron and was happy to find fellow "casters", just ordered my sportsman grille to compliment my existing horizon smoker and weber kettle. look forward to your next post
I've had mine for about a year now and use it all the time for cooking on the patio. Thank you so much for the review, you sure sold me on the product. Also I'd like to see your take on cleaning and maintaining this Sprortsman.
I absolutely love my lodge sportsman grill! Had it for years , use it in all kinds ways but mine is a little different than the new ones like my grill too is different
Thanks so much for your review! Enjoy my old cast iron pans and my Lodge Dutch Oven's that I've purchased. The Lodge Sportsman"Hibachi" just might be my next purchase. Thank you, Sir!!
This is a superb video, Jeff. Thank you so much for all the effort put into this. I'm looking for a grill right now and this answered all my questions!!! Wonderful job!!!!
What a fantastic video!!! It's now 2021 a most 2022. From what I have been told by the large compny, the Sportsman's Grille has been discontinued temporarily. They say it should return in early 22. They say they are redesigning it. We can only pray they bring it back. If and or when I see one I will buy it!!!
We have a Lodge Sportsman's Grill and we love it. It gets used more often than the range in our house around suppertime. Nothing I have ever used cooks any better and very few things cook the day in and day out grilled chicken, burgers, chops and steaks nearly as well as our Lodge Sportsman's Grill.
Great video bro,,,And thanks for the great info! i ordered mine mine this evening i saw your video this afternoon.. ya did a good job on all the details,,,,,,thanks again i liked and subscribed...Happy holidays!
Excellent video! Very informative, straight and to the point. Perfect! I must say that I too, prefer the newer Lodge grill, but that BSR would be a gem for any collector! Also, after some 60 plus years, that BSR is still here! Thanks again! Your videos are wonderful!
Nice. I am in the process of saving my Lodge version that I have not used since Covid and I didn't realize until a week ago that it was rusting badly. Now I am attempting to de-rust and season it so I can use it again. It's a great little grill. I am sorry to say that the cooking grate is the worst damage with some slaking off but I think it will work fine again. Thanks for this info.
I have the new Lodge version. I have never seen a vintage version in the wild around here. For the same reasons I bought a big roaster from cabellas that fits on the top really well . I dont know if lodge even sells a roaster of the same size. I am more into functionality than brand names. I have plenty of vintage iron with the usual big names but I also use my Taiwan and other country of origin iron if it meets my needs
Randy J Same here. I am more into functionality than brands. That is why although I have a lot of vintage stuff, I use Lodge cast iron more than anything else!
I have the older and maybe it was bought around 1940 or so. Has the pan and all. Still in great shape and still best steak cooker i have. Don't remember exactly how i came about owning it but i think it was from my Wife's grandfather.
TheFinkFarm - We'll see. You know, when I was unpacking the Lodge grill, I thought it would be foolish not to record the differences between the two while both were still clean. I had always seen the Lodge grill from a distance, but I had never gotten a chance to examine it closely. The new grill is SO much better than the old. I am thinking about just buying a second Lodge grill and not cooking on the BSR.
Lodge is hands down the best American made iron cookware you're going to get on a working man's wage. I often sand down the interior surface of my new Lodge pans and re-season them. I like a smooth finish to my cooking surface. With the Lodge grill, you can turn that top piece upside down to cook hotdogs. They fit just right between the grates to keep them from rolling around. It calls for charcoal, but I always use Mesquite chunks. Makes killer ribeyes with that wood flavor.
Curious about the two long pans you had in the video. are there any modern versions made or am i going to be flea market hunting for something like them?
I lost it in a divorce but I had the 3 leg version of the BSR grill at one time. The Lodge grill is better by far but the BSR's do have one advantage. You could get tubular steel or heavy tubular aluminum bars and use them as leg extensions to make the grill higher by sitting the grills short legs into the center of the bars and adding rubber feet to the other end of the bars. I did this which made it a comfortable height and I could put it directly on my wooden deck without worrying about catching the wood on fire.
Almost forgot, I fabricated a metal bracket/plate that sat below the grill and held all three legs together solidly and served as a shelf for grill tools. The grill could be lifted up and off the legs and the "stand" would stay together. It was a pretty sturdy set up and very handy.
I have an old BSR, and it does use a draft door...maybe they used it later? Mine is a 4 legger also. I have found the pans work better on the BSR without the grill in place, better heat.
I hope you still monitor this video. If you flip the deep pan over and have the grate in its lowest position, will it fit over the grate? I realize the feet of the grate would have to be cut off. Will it act as a lid to the Sportsman Grill?
Hey man I like your videos. You have a lot of enthusiasm about cast iron! Cast iron grill like this would be a lot of fun to use. Most my outdoor cooking is done on BBQ or with backpacking with freeze dry food. I take my mini Weber with me car camping sometimes and having that grill would make for awesome cooking also!
I just ordered one of these and was already excited and fascinated by the prospect of a cast iron outdoor grill. Now I am even more so because I had no idea there was an interesting history behind it. I am looking for some tips on how to safely extinguish the coals once it's time to put everything away for the night. Anybody?
I have what seems to me to be a hybrid of the older bsr version of this grill. It has the same pat. no. on the door and looks like the older bsr model, it has a draft door, but my model has a sportsman scene on the fire door. Thanks for your always informative vids
The Culinary Fanatic Thank you for your response. My grill does have the duck on the fire door. After watching your videos I was ashamed at the condition I have let it get to. I bought it from Williams- Sonoma around 1994 or 95. I live on St. Thomas and the grill has been to the beach many times, and the salt air, even at my house, has taken it's toll. I have used it extensively in the past, but haven't used it in a long time. It's not in too bad of shape. The grill it's self has some rust damage, the body and the doors are relatively ok, some more cleaning will bring it around. You can't really see it in the photos but the fire grate is in very poor condition. It has a long crack right down the middle on one side. I'm thinking of contacting Lodge to see if I can get a replacement. Your videos have inspired me to try and restore it. I couldn't figure out how to include the photos. Thank you
Thinking about using a high heat spray paint on the shell of my sportsman grill. Of course not the grill grate itself. Any thoughts?? Is this considered a moral sin??
Great video, I love my new lodge sportsman grill and have used it on several camping trips. Was just wondering if you can provide insight on proper clean up after cooking. Also if you could explain how you would re-season the grill top. Thanks and you have a new subscriber.
Malcolm McLaren - Doing a video on this soon. Before cooking, I line the grill with foil, leaving the draft door open. This makes clean up a breeze. After cooking, I scrub the grate with a stiff plastic or steel brush, depending on what I have cooked. In one action, I remove the foil, ashes and charcoal grate. After discarding the ashes and foil, I rinse the charcoal grate, spray it down with Pam canola, and toss it in the oven on 500 for 30 minutes. The oven is not necessary every time, but spraying this piece is. It is the part most susceptible to rust. If the grilling grate needs it, I spray it with Pam, wipe it off, and put it in the oven. If the grill needs it, I will put it in the sink and give it a rinse and a scrub with a plastic brush. I like to keep things like this looking nice, but it's probably not necessary every time. When the grill is dry, I spray a little Pam on it, inside and out, and wipe it completely off. After this, I go ahead and line the grill with foil, getting it ready for the next use.
Thanks so much for the response, this was extremely helpful. I will try to follow your process the next time i grill up. Thanks and keep up the videos!
The Culinary Fanatic Really looking forward to this video Jeff! If possible, could you also include some storage tips? Living in humid SC I don't feel like outdoor storage is a wise choice. I did see someone who said they used a Rubbermaid container I was wondering what your thoughts were (maybe with some silica desiccant??). Keep up the great work cant wait to see the video!
Hello. I just bought a new Lodge cast iron skillet today and I need to know how to prep it for cooking. Actually, it says that it's seasoned so do I need to do anything else? I thought I had seen a video you made on how to do that but I can't find it now. Could you tell me the name of the video?
***** This is an easy way to do it: ua-cam.com/video/2Pvf0m9jTeEY/v-deo.htmlou don't have to strip it. You could use it as is. I like my own way of seasoning which is why I strip Lodge cast iron.
I wish Lodge would make a dome lid with an adjustable vent/chimney as an accessory option for this. It would make this grill even more versatile as a camp site slow smoker.

I'm a BSR fan boy but the new Lodge gets my vote and money. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the video. Just picked up a used Lodge grill off the local craigslist. Cleaning it up and reseasoning it now. Looking forward to putting it to use.
you sir, are a cast iron guru..if community colleges had a class for cast iron upkeep, you could be the teacher..i love your videos.
I bought my Sportsman about15 years ago and I'm not sure which of my kids will get it when I go sneakers up, but whoever gets it will be the lucky one.
ill have to remember that...sneakers up. lol
At 9:00, "I just happen to have one." LOL.

Beautiful restoration on that BSR. Really interesting video, thank you.
Great video! I just purchased my grill yesterday. Baseball season is right around the corner!

Awesome channel! Thanks for all you do. Any time I have a cast iron question this channel is the first place I go!
I love how obsessed you are with cast iron! Nice video man

Very rarely does quality ever improve from that time in history. Lodge is such a great company.
Lodge is cheap and affordable, "great" it is not LMAO
If you want to see real all-american made quality, go check out FINEX, Smithey, or Field Cast Iron. You will N-E-V-E-R use any Lodge product ever again.
You must not be very old..lol
NeoAkira101 we disagree. Lodge makes a fantastic pan. More expensive doesn’t equal better.
Excellent comparison! I have the new lodge sportsman grill, I didn't know about it's history. Excellent grill I love mine. BTW I saw on Lodges Facebook page the featured you, congratulations on that.

You deserve the recognition too

KD5VSV - Thank you for watching.
Excellent. Thanks for the comparison. Well done!
Great video! Appreciate the time that you've put into it.
Thank you for this well done video!! Your explanations of the differences between the original and the Lodge version were very clear comprehensive.
Great Review! Thanks.
Interesting that a reproduction has so many improvements. Typically just the opposite is more common.
Watch this and make up your own mind. The new pro grill has lot of issues still. "Old is gold"
Awesome review. And remember, all engineering changes were made for improved quality and efficiency and cost savings
Fantastic review. Thanks. Gonna get me a Lodge Sportsman.
Im so happy i just got my old cast grill at my local Swapmeet 😍
I just got an old BSR grill, was all rusty too, but I just finished restoring it. Mine is much less pitted than yours and also came with a draft door. And has its bail handle. Plan to break it in this weekend 😋
A link to this video has been proudly added to my Web page on Birmingham Stove & Range: www.modemac.com/wiki/Birmingham_Stove_and_Range

Chris P. Bacon - Thank you for watching. I LOVE my grill!
Great video, We have three or four of these including the 3 leg BSR. We use ours at least once a week.
I've had mine for about a year now and use it all the time for cooking on the patio. Thank you so much for the review, you sure sold me on the product. Also I'd like to see your take on cleaning and maintaining this Sprortsman.
Nice to see something new actually better than the old...
Hey... I've been really wanting to get one of these lodge grills...great post..thanks man
I absolutely love my lodge sportsman grill!
LakeLady Jordan - Thanks for watching!!
You sold me on just this video. Why are you not making more videos? Even just some cooking ones. BTW, The BS&R did come with a draft door.
I purchased my Sportsman Grill because of this review. I’m completely satisfied, and happily recommend it to anyone.
Enjoy your video solid presentation and great information. Appreciate your detail info.
Great review you just convinced me to buy one.
Now that’s a good comparison!
Great video bro,,,And thanks for the great info! i ordered mine mine this evening i saw your video this afternoon.. ya did a good job on all the details,,,,,,thanks again i liked and subscribed...Happy holidays!
Very cool, I never knew these even existed!
Amazing~ Pls film a video of maintaining the body after use. That's the concern I have.
Phoenix DONG - I found ths article very helpful.
Very nice video, I have the sportmans pan now the lodge grill time to eat!
A great video. Im just buying one so every bit of info helps. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent video! Very informative, straight and to the point. Perfect! I must say that I too, prefer the newer Lodge grill, but that BSR would be a gem for any collector! Also, after some 60 plus years, that BSR is still here! Thanks again! Your videos are wonderful!

The only complaint I have about my lodge is the 3 legs. Other than that I love the thing!
You have some great videos and info here! Great work!
tgchism - Thank you so much for watching!

Love your chanel Jeff , as always great information.keep up the good work.
Rex Scheid Thank you so much, Rex!
Nice comparison video. Any suggestions on how to flip the Sportsman grill over when it is hot? As in a tool?
I have the older and maybe it was bought around 1940 or so. Has the pan and all. Still in great shape and still best steak cooker i have. Don't remember exactly how i came about owning it but i think it was from my Wife's grandfather.
Very informative, thank you!
Am I late, what did I miss? >< I just got me a LSG; I had no idea the design was this old!
Time to cook on it! Thanks for the vid. Would like to see one with you cooking on it.
Hi Jeff, I just picked up one of the Lodge models it was in bad shape and I am working to season it back up to being pretty !, I hope all is well !

Hope you make more videos like this

Love all your Vids !
That is really neat! I had never seen one before. Is there a flat griddle made to fit the Sportsman grill?
+Scott M (Scotty2307) There are Mexican cast iron griddles that look just like that grill, oval in shape, but I am not sure about the dimmensions.
outstanding review!

I have the EXact same BSR grill. Do you have any idea of the value on it ? Mine is complete needs cleaning up. Love your channel
Great job! Thanks.
Great review. I 'm looking into buying this to complement my gas grill. Do you think I could also use this as a mini fire pit? Sans top grate.
I have what seems to me to be a hybrid of the older bsr version of this grill. It has the same pat. no. on the door and looks like the older bsr model, it has a draft door, but my model has a sportsman scene on the fire door. Thanks for your always informative vids

Cowboy Kent Rawlins would in joy this video for sure!
Don't forget the griddle. The lodge griddle fits right on top with those notches so it doesn't slide off.
What model Lodge Griddle? I see two sizes available,
I’m buying one thanks for the info
Great breakdown
I have just bought my Lodge Sportsman...what now when it comes to seasoning?
Well done, sir!
Nice - Now I have the I wants

Really looking forward to this video Jeff!
I second Phoenix's request, the sportsman grill is great but I worry about caring for it properly.
chrismike318 - I found this article very helpful - www.cookingincastiron.com/files/20090529_LSG.html
The Culinary Fanatic Thanks!
What deep fryer are you referring to? I'd like to purchase it?
Vintage Lodge 3052D Fish fryer & the Vintage Lodge 3060 Sportsman Deep Fish Fryer. Being vintage, they are only available via 2nd hand shops or eBay.
I guess they stopped making them in 2021 and is going to release an updates version for 2022.
Awesome post!
1betrman - Thank you!
Is there a griddle attachment for morning pancakes
Thank you! And I really enjoy your videos.
