My son and I when he was about 12 or so and quite skilled for his age with the gift of perfect pitch went to buy his first guitar. He played most of the guitars in the store and settled on a Fender Squire over all in the store which had plenty of higher priced ones. We took it home and I dialed in the frets, lowered the action, and set it up to play beautifully. It still has stock pups !? He has had this for over 15 years and still loves it. When he plays with others they can't believe the tone he is able to achieve. I am writing this because he taught me a big lesson. When buying a guitar or bass, it's how it feels, plays and sounds, the name is not the most important thing. That is not to say the "name" guitars are not worth it. It is to say there are gems in the pile if you seek them out. I am presently doing an upgrade on a Talent and it is possible to get these things to play and sound great for a very small investment. Cool guitar, and yes a little set up work is a good idea.
I won a Maestro Les Paul Jr. in a Goodwill online auction . Put Hipshot locking tuners on , a Tone Rider Rebel 90 Humbucker sized P90 ( no need to route the cavity ) , Bourns full size pots w/orange drop capacitor , Golden Age Low Profile Wraparound Bridge . Saved a ton of money !
Nice video, nice work. Especially about the 50s tone circuit. I want to try that on my guitar. Well done thank you. Glad guys like you take the time to make these videos. ❤
Good video! Lollar sells a pack of gaskets of varying thickness to raise up the pickup as you did with pickguard material. As a lazy person, I prefer precut goodness. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
It's been over 2yrs since I did a P90 makeover to my Maestro Les Paul Junior (it previously took a back seat to a Maestro SG Junior). I dropped in a soapbar P90, sat it on craft stick shims and made the bezel with craft sticks topped off with a black styrene sheet cut to size. I originally dropped in a hot Bootstrap Screwdriver Double-Shot P90 until I decided to put it in another guitar recently. Although the original plan was a Thompson T90 that ended up in a Tele so I went back to the original plan and ordered another T90 which has Alnico 5 bar magnets (SDS has A2s). The CTS 250K volume pot gets clean when I roll it down and it's mated to an Alpha 250K tone pot and a 0.022uf cinnamon cap wired 50s style. The tuners are tolerable but I got a better wraparound bridge compensated for a plain G and this baby rocks way better than better than how it started... great video!
Great video! I've been thinking about doing this, because there are a ton of these Junior Bursts with a humbucker out there, but not too many with a p90.
Cool! Sounds great. I bought one of these on ebay around 10 years ago for 25 bucks. Came with the strap and a, actually, decent gigbag with the Gibson/Baldwin logo on it. It had just a slightly warped neck though so I ended up pulling the frets and resanded the fretboard and refretted it. Still isnt a 100% but it sounds great and I cant help but liking it, and I agree, its a great looking guitar.
It sounds great, and looks great. Nice job. I like the real "Tobacco" burst better than the over-done black on most newer Epiphones etc. (A good friend has an original '54 and it's not black). I'm considering converting an Epi, and they're cheap and common enough to refinish as well since they'll never be a collector's piece. They just look and sound great. Thanks for the video.
Lol, I just knocked my router off the table 😜 Those things are pretty resilient I hope lmao 😂. You seem laid bk. I will sub you now. I to have a love for the les Paul Jr. And I'm in love with the melody makers to. Have you a video on how to set the intonation on a 57 reissue les Paul Jr 😜??? I'm a little Leary of doing it myself. The big E string is most definitely out a bit. I don't think the others are that bad. Gibson sent this guitar to me with a card saying that it went through a 55 point inspection. I've got buzzing strings, a dead spot, the action is a bit high, and way up on the 20th fret on the lil E string it tries to fret out when you do a full step bend. I enjoyed your video. Thanks bro.💙💙😜💙💙👍
loved the video wish I had the talent you have (no pun intended) to do a proper dogear conversion. I ordered some all parts p90 shims for a different project but I might be tempted to take a nother look at my epi les paul jr.
Ive had an old 90s epiphone les paul jr..with 2 humbuckers..ive been wanting to do this to mine for years...cool video :) i wanna turn mine into single bridge p90 and cover the neck one..but worried the pickguard wont cover it...
@@dannyboyd5030 Good to know! I ordered one on the Black Friday deal, I took me some time to choose between the Dream and Surf, going to throw it in an old Gibson/Baldwin LPJ and do a 50's wiring and pot and capacitors and compare it to the real thing.
Just curious why you didn’t use the GFS hum bucket size p90 and saved having to route? With the quick plug, you could switch back and forth between the p90 or their Fat Pat humbucker
I did just that to my 100 buck epi les paul jr. I put a GFS Mean 90 in it and a brand new GFS wiring harness. about 160 bucks into the whole thing parts... and guitar. I will admit that the dogear Gtone did just looks cool as hell...
Never heard of Gibson Baldwin. A googlesearch tells me it is a collaboration of Gibson and a piano brand to make even cheaper Gibson knockoffs with openbook headstock. Silly since they have Epiphone. Read it was a huge failure.

Me gustó su vídeo, tengo una balwind signature, he estado pensando cambiar la pastilla como lo hizo usted. Excelente video 👍🏼

Is your workshop in Capt. Nemos' Nautilus?
Would this conversion work for a les paul standard?
Ive had an old 90s epiphone les paul jr..with 2 humbuckers..ive been wanting to do this to mine for years...cool video :) i wanna turn mine into single bridge p90 and cover the neck one..but worried the pickguard wont cover it...
Make a new pickguard.
I gleaned very little from this, other than its not what I needed. I was looking for a proper fit and replacent.
Other than aesthetics why did you just not go with a humbucker size P90?
Mostly aesthetics I guess. I was originally suspect of humbucker sized "P90"'s but have ones that do sound great.
I did the GFS Mean 90 in my epi les paul jr and it sounds sick... the cool factor of a dogear is next level cool.

What bridge did you put back on there ? Looks like a compensated one...
It's just the stock wrap around that's compensated, just not very adjustable.
It kinda looked nice without the pickguard.
So did you just cut out the top part ? Top edge only to make fit? Cant tell
Yes, Top edge, just enough to let the pickup sit flush.
Thank you wow
How have I missed this brand? I guess it’s like Rogue, by Squier, by Fender. lol

Goof hiders
Totally useless no info on wiring from humbucker to p 90
There's no difference between the two for wiring. Hot is Hot, ground is ground, Red and White get looped. Same, although the colors may be different.
