- Machinist's Tie Fighter build! This model was made as part of NYCCNC's 'make a tie fighter challenge' in January 2020.
My concept was to primarily use manual machining methods to make the ship. The CNC router was employed to add a greebled recess in each wing, which then enabled the dark panels on the wings using a cold blue (selenium dioxide) solution.
I may do a follow up video on getting better better cold blue results.
I'm aware that CNC routers are not a great choice for milling steel, I kept my spindle speed low as practical (and thus feed as well) and used my smallest endmill to avoid excessive surface speed burning it up. It did struggle with cutting the steel, but who am I to argue with the result?
And yes, I know there are still face mill marks on the wing, I didn't make the recess deep enough couldn't sand much deeper. BUT if you listen to George Lucas discuss the Star Wars world, he intentionally made things 'dirty and used' to make it more realistic. So I'm justifying it as being 'in with the Star Wars look'!

....... and you too Craig
You can thread into wood and composite. Just make the hole for 100% thread depth. It even works in MDF. Acceptable in particle board if you choose a coarse thread. In solid hardwoods and quality plywood's a threaded hole has greater pullout resistance than a screw. Some tips and tricks us old farts pick up over the years. I've used them on jigs and fixtures in my cabinet shop for decades.
P.S. Like the project Tom. Nice to see you apply a little imagination and a lot of creativity in fleshing out a complete design idea that is more like a sculpture than a machined item.
Good tip, I'll have to try that
I've been thinking of doing more creative projects like this
Thanks for watching
man I wish disney hadn't destroyed starwars
I know, I went with the 'classic' tie fighter for a reason :)
I haven't seen any movies after Episode 8 Star Wars: A Disney Adventure for kids
Love it!
Cheers Alistair!
I had fun :)
Great build mate!
Cheers!
Good work Tom. Great to see you getting your name out there mate 👍🍻
Yeah it's been good for the channel!
Fun project!
Now I need to work out how to attach a spoon to it :)

Thanks for watching!
Hi Tommy. Cool project. Like the Starwars touches on the video.
Thanks! I had fun doing it :)
Wow, well done! 👍😊👍
Great build Tom. The CNC router handled that steel pretty well (mild steel?)
Ha it's interesting, it did blunt after doing the first wing and then wouldn't cut, and rather than waiting for another endmill I did a hack job sharpening it on a diamond knife block and then it happily did the rest of the wings. So my hand sharpened geometry was better??
And yes, mild steel
@@TomMakeHere The sharpening force is with you! (apparently) :)
Nice one,Tom. I like it very much.
Cheers! I had fun making it and experimenting with workholding!
Bringing Tasmania to the world, well done that young man.
*Puts on loud voice* TASSIE REPRESENT!
Thanks for watching
That is awesome! I guess I've been so busy I missed John's Tie Fighter Challenge. Nicely done piece there!
I think we have all been a bit distracted recently. Thanks for watching. Stay healthy
Awesome. The force is strong in this 1
Cheers Craig!
