    Want to thank you for suggesting WANDERING SOULS. In 1978 my family welcomed a Vietnamese family into our home and walked with them on their adjustment journey. Stunning and thoughtful writing and opened my eyes to emotions I have not thought about for years. I am new to your book tube but enjoy it so much.

      I've heard good things about Memento Mori--thank you. I think I focused in on Prime because of the movie connection. But if I like it I fully expect to try more. The Mandelbaum Gate is the only one my local used bookstore seems to ever get its hands on.

    I absolutely loved Wandering Souls. I don't understand why it doesn't get more attention. Also, I DNFed Night Watch. Not only did I not enjoy the book I thought the cover was hideous (not that it matters). I'm about 50 pages into The Guncle Abroad 🤗. Happy Pride! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

    The Land of Spices is a wonderful book, it was one of the many I was assigned during my study abroad year in Ireland and it was probably my favorite. Some of the things I appreciated about it the most was the way it described dealing with grief (subtle butvstill powerful) lesbian identity (not explicit, but still undeniable and very tender) and also the depiction of a sufragette (at that time the only one I came across them in fiction or media were those in Mary Poppins and I so hate those). Amongst women sounds fantastic, I have only read a short story by John McGahern and it was great, but I don't really remember much of it.

    There’s nothing like books as souvenirs of a great trip! I always go with a list of what I’m looking for or browse on my own. I was thinking about whether I’ve had experiences like you did with some of the booksellers and the answer is generally no,unless I’ve made a contact prior to the trip on social media. But usually the conversations I have are limited to not being able to find what I’m looking for. I definitely want to try your approach to finding something I hadn’t known about before.
    Did Joel get any books on your trip?
    Teddy almost sent me to sleepy land with his snoring. It wasn’t your content, I assure you! 😂

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  29 днів тому +1

      Teddy has had a big week for playtime, so he was very sleepy!
      Joel got some cookbooks and a photo book of Ireland. We'll show them off in our monthly wrap-up.
      I love the approach I discussed, but I wasn't able to try it in every store we visited. Books Upstairs had two employees, but both were busy helping other customers and I didn't want to interrupt. And the same was true for Lighthouse Books in Edinburgh. But when there's time, it's so fun to get to chat with them.

    I just finished Night Watch yesterday after coming very close to DNFing. I was impressed by its ability to be neither plot-driven nor character-focused, just tedious. I read “ The Echo Chamber “ by John Boyne a year or so ago - it is the story of how social media completely disrupts a family. And it is brilliant; one of my funniest reads of the last at few years. Highly recommend it. Not sure, but I think it is rather different from his other books.

    Wellllll my tbr is in trouble again lol. I have seen that John Boyne has a whole slew of recent novellas named Under the Earth, water, earth and I have two of them so far but haven’t read them yet. I loved The Hearts Invisible Furies but I never picked up Ladder to the Sky. I’ll be curious how these shorter novellas play out… I am most interested in Small Joys, Fools Crow, Old Romantics and The Safekeep …. So you know, just about all of themmmm thaaaanks lol I mean thanks!! ☺️
    I always have mixed feelings about new books on my radar. Especially when I feel like I know in my bones I might like something. I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on the Pulitzer Prize winner and why you disliked it so much… I haven’t read it, but ironically, there is a nonfiction that came out on the same subject, different insane asylum, and I’m betting it will win some non fiction awards for its research and story. I actually thought it would be good to read them back to back to compare the fiction to the non fiction … I might do that this winter. I just realized that my one 2024 tbr shelf has more books on it than I can read in the remainder of this year and so if each shelf has 2 years worth of unread books, I have to make sure I don’t die in the next 20 years, and let’s face it, I’m no spring chicken 😊😅😂 oh boy. I may need to cull some and I feel extra guilty to do it if I haven’t read them. Wish me luck and I’m looking forward to your next video. Hopefully I find one that shows a bit of your trip!😊

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  24 дні тому

      Good luck! Both my Pulitzer video and a video about the trip have been posted now. One thing that might be good to know about John Boyne (pointed out to me by a subscriber) is that he has had some transphobic controversies in recent years.

    • @Phillybookfairy
      @Phillybookfairy 24 дні тому

      @@SupposedlyFun hmmm I did not hear of controversy but then again, I don’t look for them either. If someone has an unpopular opinion that’s their prerogative, as long as they are not into hate speech, which I would tend to think not in his case….? But good writing is good writing. Usually if someone is a bigot you will be able to tell thru their writing there will be hints that will sway me away from that author, but I haven’t seen that so far with him since I’ve only read that one book. Thanks for the heads up though, I’ll be reading on the lookout for that bias in his writing, if it doesn’t bleed thru I’ll still be a fan. And nothing will ever take away from the brilliance of The Hearts Invisible Furies.
      I’m excited to see your vacation videos!!

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  24 дні тому

      @@Phillybookfairy From what I've heard and seen, the controversy began with his handling of a transgender character in one of his novels--and then got worse based on his response to those conversations.
