    Amazing.
    Beth Patterson is one of the best performers of our time. This one single performance is simply....one single performance. Love you Beth!!!!

    'bastard child' is a little harsh. It's just a evolution of a traditional instrument ... Things like this happen every day ...
    The bouzouki itself is an evolution of the tambura and comes from a very old tradition of long necked lutes from middle east, like buzuq (Turkey), tar (Iran) etc., probably 4000 BC.

    I remember when Beth was first learning to play that thing...that is an 8-string Irish bouzouki, a bastard child of the Greek bouzouki...she is also a master of the 10-string Irish bouzouki as well as oboe and 4, 5 and 6 string bass.

    An octave mandolin (or tenor mandola in Europe) is shorter with thicker strings. This instrument is an Irish bouzouki. Long strigs (just like a folk guitar) with extra light gauge for a lon sustain.

    • @peskybear1432
      @peskybear1432 2 роки тому

      In the U.K./Eire/Europe we call the US Octave Mandolin an Octave Mandola, not a Tenor Mandola that is a different instrument again.

    Oui, on retrouve les origines orientales du bouzouki ! Bravo !
    Bouzouki is also - and above all - an eastern instrument :-))

    • @alternativedavey5650
      @alternativedavey5650 2 роки тому +1

      Just wait. Someday only a handful of random people will actually know the origin of the bouzouki. Even so, I greatly appreciate the fact that the great Johnny Moynihan has introduced the wonderful thing to the west. It's an amazing instrument.

    • @taobert2
      @taobert2 Рік тому

      Yes, the earth is round, which is why the usual distinction between east and west is often meaningless (especially when it comes to music, which is universal). ;)

    What's with the tounge?? Does Gene Simmons play zouk too?

  • @charlesdaigle8633
    @charlesdaigle8633 11 років тому

    Correct, this is her 8 string Bouzouki, (or her banjo as she describes it when boarding an airplane). She also has a 10 string bouzouki (lower course) and a new electric 8 string she's using on the new album..
