The best part for me was at the end, being able to look back and see just how much elevator and rudder input is happening while scooping. That was really cool!

I was on this fire on the ground. This is the place that made me want to combine my love of aviation with firefighting. I'm a fresh commercial pilot and working towards my dreams of exactly what you are doing. Amazing video and invaluable insight for me!

That’s cool! It was an interesting fire with plenty to work around n both sides of the river and a lot of structures. I just put this clip up to see how it would look on VR - I’m not happy with the resolution.
Keep in touch as you become qualified - Dauntless is a great company to fly for, and the FireBoss is an awesome airplane.

This is amazing footage! Love being able to see every angle during the scooping. Interesting that you come in with flaps deployed, then retracted while scooping, then deployed again. Is that to prevent the plane from taking off while scooping?

Thanks! I just wanted to see how this looked on an Oculus - a little disappointing honestly. The resolution is worse than I’d hoped.
I pull the flaps up in the flare to get on the water more quickly - scooping with flaps up can be necessary in high winds, but the airplane generally doesn’t want to come off the water with scoops deployed. In heavier water I’ll scoop with flaps out to reduce the impact on the floats and try to stay in the tops of the waves.

What do you get around 600-700 gallons per scoop? I’m guessing you come in feeling like a fighter. Light and speedy with throttle to spare, scoop and climb out at full power feeling like a C-17!

That’s about right - except that full power comes in right after the scoops deploy (depending on wind)

@@brentvoris4399 I kinda figured. I’ve never done that before, but I figured either when you first started scooping or gradually as you fill. I wasn’t sure if the engine would produce a lot of torque and force one pontoon lower and possibly causing a cartwheel if you did it all at once. I know that plane has a lot of power and with the added pontoons I could only imagine maybe having to give it more rudder to compensate for the torque. Thank you for your service! I’m sure the guys on the ground are like the military, happy to see air support on station!
