Rod Evans: lead vocals, Ritchie Blackmore: guitar, Nick Simper: bass guitar and backing vocals, Jon Lord: organ, keyboards, backing vocals, Ian Paice: drums
Rod Evans was one of the greatest vocalists ever. Deep Purple (mkI, as they say), was the definitive incarnation of the band... their first three were brilliant... Ritchie -- genius. The writing, incredible.
@@bananitojunior9043 Gillan is best 70's rock voice?... Better than Coverdale? Dio? David Byron? Freddie Mercury? Even the falsetto singer Glen Hughes is on the Gillan's level...
For Steve Tiggleman: Ritchie was playing a Gibson 335 semi-hollowbody with double coil humbuckers and he's fingerpicking. Those 2 things alone would make his guitar sound completely different from his future choice of a Fender Stratocaster which has single coil pickups. But above all, please know this isn't live. There are no amps and no cords plugged into anything. The 60's.
In my opinion deep purple blew the original out of the stratosphere with this cover, yes John Lennon and Rod Evans have two very different vocal ranges it's the pure heart and soul that the deep purple put in to this cover, this is one of the few beatles covers that i think the cover was better than the original
That's interesting since John Lennon originally wrote Help as a slower song but it was speeded up to be more commercial and poppy. Lennon didn't like the faster version but he went with it. I wonder what he thought of this version that's probably closer to what he originally created.
This is in Gladsaxe, Denmark. It is street level. The background shows this at a couple places, but at 5:04 you can see a very pretty young lady behind Ritchie's guitar. A bit later there is a man walking in that background. It looks like the spot was still in development. I think Ritchie's guitar sounds great on the first three albums. Of course they both sound great in all the albums. Was Child in Time the Gibson or the Fender? If it was the Gibson, I don't see why he would have moved on from it. I'm guessing it was the Fender at that point
Sin duda mi hermano , a veces los líderes de un grupo toma decisiones apresuradas y cambian a sus integrantes sin saber que pierden su esencia , Rod Evans merecía seguir en el grupo
It's a cover ... sure! But they were three to sang that song ... and Rod Evans was alone. The feeling of that particular song is different on that way ... and remaquable!
Rod Evans is Fantastic......It's weird to see The Mister Man in Black being so uptight ....anyway he is the man....great solos by Lord and Blackmore....3: 26 is epic....and 5:02 is epic either....
I read the same a couple of years ago: this was a legit depressive help request from Lennon, but George Martin wanted it to be more upbeat and catchy, hence the version we all know.
Stunning arrangement, Blackmore still feels a little raw while Jon Lord is a genius. By the way, maybe he's using a Continental here and not a Hammond connected to a Fender amp like in the iconic Live in Japan.
Why is it in black & white? Someone had posted it in color, but I can't find it now. I think it was someone whose user name was "Serge Purple". Words can not express how much I'm in love with this video, but it's SO MUCH BETTER IN COLOR!
NO, they let him go because Blackers and Lord wanted a more intense sound. They were comparing to the screaming sounds of Robert Plant, it was documented in interviews by Blackers. NOT because of what you said that Evans didn't want to sing faster or louder, Blackers and Lord made the decision. Sorry to disappoint you!

Help

In my opinion, this is beautiful.
Tal como Lennon la quería......Emocionante!
I am not a fan of bands doing Beatles songs but Purple made it their song for that moment in time. Very nice for sure.
Only Deep Purple perfected it.
@@maxmulsanne7054 Let's not get carried away. I like it a lot but Purple at their best couldn't shine the Beatles shoes.
@@Jessey630
And the Beatles version of 'Help' was what?... the teenybopper version.

Excellent covers on the album Shades of Deep Purple. This, Hey Joe, I'm So Glad. So incredible.

vampyros1 Rod was a good singer, but there' s no comparison with the master Ian Gillan who, in my opinion, is the best vocalist of rock from the 70's.
aitor riera Sorry, couldn't disagree more; not only was the pre-Gillan Purple the bands' creative zenith, but Rod Evans' vocals were nonpareil.

I love the hazy 60s era of rock especially early Purple
shades of deep purple is the best album
so soft , so nice , blossoming of Deep Purple ,the crystal clear sound of Blackmor's guitar, translucent percussion of Paice.... those were the days
Great live version
I mean i am the biggest Beatles fan and they're my favorite band but we gotta admit that this version right here is wayyyy better than the original
Ha, Ha. "We" don't have to admit that. But it is very good.
It IS the better version.

wow! first time i see that!greetings from italy!
wow the coda is just ethereal
I like their matching hairdos!

@@ririririr7604 that's interesting to find that out from you about this sng beeing originally slow, thanks.

marvellous early purple
best version of this song ever. even better than the original
Bravo Rod !!!

Almost sounds like Vanilla Fudge, doing "heavy" versions of pop hits. This is a great find, thanks so much for posting.
Best Beatles cover, period.
Tho, certainly not a live version.
Pretty different from the album version I've got.
I live for that organ solo
So many of those 70s supergroups had their roots in the Beatles.
Eines der schönsten Beatles Cover finde ich!
Боже! Какие молодые.
Great version! I always felt these lyrics have more to do with drugs than anything else, with the "help me get my feet back on the ground" bit...
Ritchie is as far as I know a big Bob Dylan and Beatles Fan.
you can hear that here^

On a roof, prior to the Beatles... please take note!!!
Ha! Ha!
not really, cars in the background on same level and a bicicle crossing..:)
Actually Jefferson Airplnae made the first filmed live on a roof, before Beatles.
Ha, looks more like a car park.
Mauri Dr.G on a parking lot at Brønshøj in Denmark.

This is so very cool....Rod had such a good voice, too bad he fell off the planet
Спасибо.
Better version than original - Paul McCartney and John Lennon said that is the best cover ever heard
Nah mate, John Farnham many years later and far superior.
I agree
No way.
great vid! awesome, man!
Amo a the Beatles pero está versión está muy buena están vivos los integrantes de esta banda????
takes me back...
Mi favorita formacion, Rod Evans mi idolo!
