  • One of the big events that we look forward to every year is the Show of Shows in Louisville, KY. For a few days, this place becomes one of the biggest museums in the U.S. where you can actually buy some of the artifacts. We're walking the floor with Erik Dorr of The Gettysburg Museum of History to learn a bit more about our history through these artifacts and see what we can come home with.
    This episode was produced in partnership with The Gettysburg Museum of History. See how you can support history education & artifact preservation by visiting their website & store at www.gettysburgmuseumofhistory...

    The reason your vids are so good is because you bring a large element of emotion to most everything you do JD. It's real...not forced because you are real about it and bring it with you. What a smart guy to surround yourself with such people and knowledge. Still say you should have your own tv show.

    Great video. I liked the framed picture of the Iwo Jima flag raising with signatures of 2 of the flag raisers. Several years ago they found out that Rene Gagnon was not one of the flag raisers. Those posters of the famous Iwo Jima flag raising was very cool. However, Rene Gagnon was not one of the actual flag raisers. He brought the famous second flag up to the top of the mountain. Here is the list of the flag raisers: Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Michael Strank, Franklin Sousley, Harold Keller and Harlon Block. John Bradley was not a flag raiser. The Marines corrected the flag raisers about 6 years ago. Still a neat poster artifact.

    I've raised a recommendation to our local library to get Chris' books - praying hard they'll get them🤞With what's going on in two continents now, our children need to learn about what the veterans did and went through during the war
    That little interaction with the veteran was so sweet. Best of health, Ed! ❤
    On a sidenote, if you read Ed Shames' book "Airborne: The Combat Story of Ed Shames of Easy Company", Shames did mention Joe Madonna quite a bit. If my memory serves, Madonna was one of Shames' buddies in I Company before he was transferred to Easy

    This reminds me of the early US space program. It seems to me that NASA used multiple probes launched nearly simultaneously in order to get one successful mission. I think that this company would be a good candidate to proceed further, their Mk 2 version will perform significantly better than the first attempt. Obviously, they have a great team to be able to cope with the many in-flight challenges of this mission. Don’t think of this as a complete failure, but use the SPACEX philosophy and think of it as a near success. Spacefaring is hard.

    JD: You produce very engaging and entertaining videos, which I enjoy very much. I would like to make a correction to what Bill Shea said regarding the famous Joe Rosenthal image of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi: Rene Gagnon is NOT in that photo. He was a runner and carried the flag pictured (which was the second flag raised). He was in other posed photos taken afterwards on the summit, but he is not in that famous photo. It only took the Marine Corps until October 2019, 74 years after the battle for Iwo Jima, to correctly identify Harold Keller instead of Rene Gagnon as one of the six Marines in the photo.

    • @TheHistoryUnderground
      @TheHistoryUnderground  4 місяці тому

      That is correct. We talked about that off camera but I should have made a notation on camera. I think that Bill was referring to the fact that Gagnon was credited as a flag raiser at the time.

    Let me start by saying that I love your videos. I do take exception with the comment that Mr. Wyatt made about the Iron Cross being the equivalent to the Medal of Honor. In order to win a Medal of Honor someone had to truly go above and beyond. Sadly, most of them died in earning that medal. The very fact that there are multiple awards of the Iron Cross tells me they are not equivalent.

      Budget for around £2,000 ..they are about as a case of unused examples were found in royal air force storage and came onto the collector market,which is the source of both mine and the example in this video...there are examples from the same batch in museums in the uk,usa,australia to name but a few
