Barbara put such energy, spirit, humor and love into everything in this medley......as she always did in everything she sang, not to mention one of the most pure and beautiful voices of the century. One of my idols. ❤️
Saw her perform I think at Reno Sweeny in NYC in the 70's. Very small room and I thought I was going to loose my hearing. One of the best performances ever. Had all her albums. Those were the days!!
Funny as for years I “ judge “ my fav singers ( white singers ) their ability to sing from Porgy and Bess . Barbara amongst my ultimate fav rendition , arrangements . One my all time fav recordings since I was a teen , Cleo Laine and Ray Charles recording . Double lp , Lol .This a dynamite performance !!!!!
Ms. Cook is in her late 80s here. Can you believe that?! The purity, sweetness and control are all still there. Amazing! One of the great interpreters of song of any century. RIP Madam.
We saw her in Westbury (long Island) and the Bronx campus of Hunter easily 20 to 30 years ago Outstanding artist, great entertainer. going south had its advantages yet missing Ms. Cook at the Cafe Carlyle was our loss
And I thought I had the ONLY recording of this. Many years ago, at a used record store in Manchester NH the clerk handed me a cassette and said "here you take this, nothing I care for, maybe you'll like it. I looked at the label and it said "Barbara Cook in Concert, BBC II and a date that whoever had recorded it off the radio. It is a recording of a full concert at Drury Lane Theater, date unknown. IT IS NOT THE SAME LIVE PERFORMANCE AT THE SAME VENUE THAT IS ON THE LIVE FROM LONDON CD ON DRG RECORDS! It has several performances of songs she never recorded, such as a medley of "Look for the Silver Lining" and "Pennies from Heaven," "When Sunny Gets Blue (much earlier and in better voice than the commercial recording) and "A House is Not a Home." Then there is this Porgy and Bess Medley which until people here it, can't believe Barbara Cook sang. It really doesn't suit her all that well (OK, I will admit that I like my Porgy and Bess pure, in the opera version) and as far as I know it wasn't regularly in her repertoire. She never recorded it commercially. Now others can here what I have on a cassette, now transfered to CD for posterity. Whoever posted this, what is the source, where was it recorded. Thanks for posting.
Her Voice got even better as she Aged... because she lost some of the bright "chirpiness" to her sound. And she developed a deeper style of interpretation.
Miss her so much. I flew the world to see some of her concerts...Just hope I can see her and delight in that voice in the next world.

I was there too in the 70's. She really didn't need a microphone in that venue. What a performance she gave!
Fabulous Artist 🌸🎶✨👍

Word for word, note for note...PERFECTION!!!
Rest in peace, beautiful voice! You memory will live on forever!
Thanks for all the wonderful sounds you gave us. God bless you as you take your songs to heaven.

That's Wally Harper conducting. I think he passed away in 2004. That would put Ms Cook at mid-70's at the latest.
@@ceslacl2628 I'll take 70s too. Thanks.
What a great medley! Barbara will be appearing with Glen Campbell tonight in heaven. Godspeed to both of them.

The Drury Lane concert was 1996 (Barbara was 69!) *hear (ears), not here!
If you like jazz- Mel Torme has a Porgy and Bess medley on one of his live albums.
R.I.P. barbara you'll be missed
