Great review of an exceptional bike. The Insurgent is indeed shockingly easy to pedal for a LT bike. I have the Mx version. It’s truly wicked. I’ve ridden it back to back with a high spec HighTower from 21 and , sadly, the High Tower is a poor second in every department. It’s less planted, it’s not as manoeuvrable at back end abd it feels sluggish uphill comparatively. If I’d set foot on an Evil beforehand I would never have bought the HT as an all purpose bike. Despite coil snd LT I actually have a grin every time I ride the Evil and that’s no bad thing on the run- in to 60 yrs old.
Subscribed solely based on quality and skill. After watching this, I realized how poor my game is. You're sailing off the brakes and giving a clear play by play like you're fresh off 2 days rest. Unbelievable. I've been on the 27.5 Insurgent for about a month now and everything you described was spot on, even the brakes. So glad you mentioned the brakes and I agree. I get some pretty entertaining looks when I am pedaling what I call "the monster truck" up some technical climbs. Downhill though, it's like a unicorn galloping through clouds on speed. I blasted through a rock garden that ALWAYS causes me problems and I could have had a cup of coffee while doing it. It's such a fun bike. Thanks for the killer review, I made the mistake of watching this at work, now I have to wait till I can get on the bike.

A year later, but I bought this bike (full 27.5 version) and it's the real deal! Everything in the review is on point. It's my park bike here at N* in Tahoe but I also trail ride it and it doesn't feel like a tank. You do need to ride it fast for it to be at its most playful, but I feel like if you're buying this bike you like to go fast. ;)

So surreal. I've been watching Spencer Astra's personal YT channel, but searched for this bike because I'm picking up a used one soon. I couldn't figure out why the voice was exactly the same...
Hey man, I really love your reviews, I've watched quite a few now. I would really like some insight if you have a moment. I'm looking for a new bike. I'm currently on a V3 Bronson with a 160 cascade link and a 38 170. I've been avoiding moving up to a 29er, as I'm short at 5'8 and worried about losing fun of the bike. After watching your videos, I think I've decided on a Wreckoning or an Insurgent. I'm leaning more Insurgent, but I'd like to get your take on it. Also the sizing is concerning. I'm currently on a Med Bronson. But the Evils in Med are way bigger. In fact, the small Evils are actually a touch longer than my Med Bronson. Should I go for a small, or get the Med evil size?
nice video, i`m about to buy this bike and i dont know what size i should take, i am 170 but i`ll still grow cause i`m 15. Should i get an S or M sizeed bike, more handling or stability? And should i buy the gx kit for 6000 or the xo1 kit for 7000?
This is the first mixed wheel bike I’ve really been interested in. Of course every time I watch one of your reviews I get interested LOL love your stuff man keep them coming PS when are you going to demo a Ripmo
You will not regret the MX version. What a sweet revelation. A real hatchback at the rear end but with Monster truck roll- over at the front. It’s the most playful yet planted bike I’ve ever ridden. Just a big grin inducing bike.
Why yes it can. That’s the shocking thing. I’m 54-5. I suffer from atrial fibrillation at times snd so take it slow. Yet, I actually smile riding the Evil up trails. I bought a High Tower to replace my mk1 version as a do-it-all trail bike. The Evil is way more fun, that bit rowdier when you need it, feels much nimbler and is hugely more confidence inspiring. I rode the EWS tracks in Innerleithen two weeks ago on it. Next day we did a 20km trail ride with no moaning or groaning from me. I wouldn’t choose it gor 30km plus XC rides but that has more to do with my age/ condition. My 16 yr old would probably take it on such a ride. The High Tower is going if I can entice a buyer.
Last year after your Wreckoning video I went straight to the shop and bought one. My Girlfriend has since absconded with it and now I think I’ll have to replace that with this Insurgent… I can’t imagine a more playful big bike than the V3 Wrecker.. this new one must be nutters
Spencer is a fantastic rider, he always shreds (and while doing reviews!). But with the Evil bikes (Also watched the Offering and Wreckoning reviews), dude just goes insane! The one with the Niner RIP was incredible too
How are you getting bikes to even review them? Excellent review, as always, looking to get an MX bike for next season. I'm not as solid a rider as you are, ride blacks and blues mostly and the occasional double black. Would this be "too much" bike for me? I like that it looked really playful and poppy. Almost like it take a boring trail and make it fun.
This MX or the Switchblade....that is my dilemma. Any perspective? Currently on a Wrecker LB looking to dial it back and go more nimble, lighter/smaller, for local stuff but also double as my park bike (ride mostly flow and jump trails)
Well shoot....I just put in my order for a Wreckoning....wonder if I should change it over. Interesting that the Evil site seems to recommend a Medium for my height of 5'10" on the wreckoning, but Large for the Insurgent, which is a longer bike at the same size than the Wreckoning.
I'm 5'11" and ride a medium v2 Wreckoning and the fit is perfect! The bike can take whatever you throw at it and still remains nimble as can be. I should mention it has a 161 Push Elevensix on the rear and a 170 Fox 36 with a Push ACS coil conversion in the front.
@@TheMTBRider96Thanks. Yeah I imagine the Medium will work great. I am used to 460-470mm reach, so I can always use a slightly longer stem if needed. The Medium Wreckoning wheelbase is 1226mm with the 170mm fork, which is about the same as my 2021 Large Stumpy.
Im 5’10” also and love my medium V3 Wrecker. I also have a V1 Offering, which is a tad longer. Also feels great. I wouldnt go Large on any of these bikes. 455- 460mm reach seems pretty darn correct.
I came for the review but really curious about your camera and camera settings, quality is fantastic :) chest mounted GoPro? Gimbal or no ? Settings - if you’re willing to share some info.
Request to Evil: please make a cool color option for this bike, much like how the Wreckoning has… eg bring back that atomic greenish yellow from the older insurgent
Really I dislike their fluro-superbright color ways. Like Bug zapper blue, that coral red the wreck came in year before last and that yellow/green slime. I LOVE their mettalic shades like Freddie Mercury and Rusty Trombone. I also loved the yogurt truck color way and the new color for the Offering v2:Wasabi Smoke. Those 4 color ways were some of the best in the industry I thought. Especially the Freddie Mercury with gold decals, Yogurt Truck with burgundy decals and wasabi smoke with bronze/copper decals
@@johnsospencer brilliant. I just picked up a new Insurgent yesterday as a replacement for a v3 wrecker. Your review really helped push me past the line on it. Thanks!
@@wpautz I actually cancelled my Insurgent I'd already paid for and had waiting for me to pick up and decided to stick with the Wrecker. Just realized I love my Wrecker and there's no way moving to the new Insurgent was worth the $K. I am going to experiment with a 27.5 on the Wrecker though after seeing some posts on the Evil Fb group about how it's working out well for some folks.
Based on other reviews, sounds like the Specialized Enduro is too long, almost a DH, while this one is very playful. Another UA-camr called VanCan has owned and reviewed both.
im considering trading my 2019 santa cruz megatower for an insurgent, its a really tough choice tho as my dream bike is the megatower but I'm just so torn cause its not working that well for me and the insurgent looks like a great bike
No one has any. Not even YT. That's why you don't see any reviews anywhere. Scheduled to begin delivering around April 2022 😕. I had one on order(core 4 medium in black) and I canceled once I was able to speak to a YT rep. Great bike with good components, but ended up going with this exact bike instead. My Evil insurgent MX is only a few weeks away. The YT has an X01 drivetrain and Code RSC dh brakes while this bike has a GX(a step lower) drivetrain but I9 Hydra hubs for the same 6k price. I'll be upgrading my brakes eventually to codes or XTR's and will keep the GX drivetrain since I hear and read nothing but great things about it anywhere I look. Good luck man. Edit: I live in Southern California, not too far from the YT MILL(their HQ here in San Clemente) and even they don't know when they'll have a demo Capra. Told me more than likely next year 🤦🏾♂️. I'm saying why release a bike if you don't even have any virtual stock? By the time you receive yours, the newer models will be out.....
@@freehubmag Can’t wait for that. Earlier the Insurgent was more similar traveled to the Bronson and they were both on my list, but with the new Insurgent I’m worried that it’s too much of a bike for someone who’s not riding as gnarly and airborne stuff.
Hey Christian, I've been running them with my typical 18% sag ( a bit stiffer) and around 3-4 clicks from the fastest rebound setting and just two clicks (from wide open) of High Speed Compression. I really really love the damping in the Zeb, its very reactive compared to my new 36.
Everything functions properly ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

Im 5’10” also and love my medium V3 Wrecker. I also have a V1 Offering, which is a tad longer. Also feels great. I wouldnt go Large on any of these bikes. 455- 460mm reach seems pretty darn correct.
I love these. Man you were going fast.
Can’t wait for your review on the new Bronson!
Stay tuned!
@@freehubmag oh I will bro! Wish you did more of these, I’d love to see reviews on retro bikes too.
Awesome reviews .. how do you think this bike will do in the bike park , jump lines etc ?
🤯- that was a treat.
I came for the review but really curious about your camera and camera settings, quality is fantastic :) chest mounted GoPro? Gimbal or no ? Settings - if you’re willing to share some info.
Hero 7 with karma gimbal on chest mount. 4K 24fps.Superview, low sharpness, and auto shutter for the woods.
Gotta love a playful rear-end lol
@freehub Did you find the sizing true ? I’m 181cm. … This or the Wreckoning ? What’s you thinks the best all rounder.
Curious - Insurgent MX or Wrecker V3? What's your preference?
Insurgent, and I don't know why. It just really clicked for me.
@@johnsospencer brilliant. I just picked up a new Insurgent yesterday as a replacement for a v3 wrecker. Your review really helped push me past the line on it. Thanks!
@@johnsospencer insurgent vs offering ? ? ?
@@edylan thoughts now on Wrecker vs Insurgent?
@@wpautz I actually cancelled my Insurgent I'd already paid for and had waiting for me to pick up and decided to stick with the Wrecker. Just realized I love my Wrecker and there's no way moving to the new Insurgent was worth the $K. I am going to experiment with a 27.5 on the Wrecker though after seeing some posts on the Evil Fb group about how it's working out well for some folks.
That or the enduro?
Thank you so much for your time!
Based on other reviews, sounds like the Specialized Enduro is too long, almost a DH, while this one is very playful.
Another UA-camr called VanCan has owned and reviewed both.
Correction, VanCan has the Evil Wreckoning, and seems to prefer it over his Enduro.
Would love to see you do a review of a Guerrilla Gravity
Pretty nice bike
Great review!!!!
im considering trading my 2019 santa cruz megatower for an insurgent, its a really tough choice tho as my dream bike is the megatower but I'm just so torn cause its not working that well for me and the insurgent looks like a great bike
Great Review, loving the Evil Content.
Any change of a YT Capra Review?
Solid 🤟hope they come with a mullet Calling
New range or insurgent? Cant decide. Seams like the evil is a better allrounder
Awesome review. I wish I had half of your riding skill. Can you review the new Santa Cruz Bronson..thanks
Stay tuned one is in the works!
@@freehubmag Can’t wait for that. Earlier the Insurgent was more similar traveled to the Bronson and they were both on my list, but with the new Insurgent I’m worried that it’s too much of a bike for someone who’s not riding as gnarly and airborne stuff.
Ripping!!!
Rippin! Lets get a Patrol MX in the mix too...btw what trail in bham is this? Im not placing it...
Double Black / Double Down
@@freehubmag Oh chuckanut? Thats it!
good lord I want one
dam now I don't know wether to go with This bike or the wrekoning
Which did you end up getting?
@@wpautz I still haven't gotten one yet mainly because stock issues and them not being available but also I don't quit have enough money yet
The Beckoning 😁
Awesome review! How do you like to set up the Zebs?
Hey Christian, I've been running them with my typical 18% sag ( a bit stiffer) and around 3-4 clicks from the fastest rebound setting and just two clicks (from wide open) of High Speed Compression. I really really love the damping in the Zeb, its very reactive compared to my new 36.
What bike did you enjoy more the wreckoning or the insurgent?
the stoke is real
nice video, keep it up
Nice video. Which ND filter are you using?
polar pro ND's. Hero 7 with karma gimbal on chest mount. 4K 24fps, Superview, low sharpness, and auto shutter for the woods.
@@freehubmag love the crisp audio on all these reviews! what's your mic set up for the hero 7?
@@espressoenduro Zoom H1n audio recorder with a big windscreen on a Lavalier mic
Hey man just wondering if a 29 rear wheel would still fit if i choose the mx version
For a full 29er, you'd just get the Evil Wreckoning.
