  • 1966 Ford Thunderbird
Originally designed to compete against the Chevrolet Corvette the Thunderbird was launched in 1955 and was never marketed as a sports car however it created a new market, the "personal luxury car". Originally a 2 seater by 1958 the Thunderbird had gained an extra set of seats to appeal to the executive family man. By 1961 the third generation cars had become sleeker with a more bullet type appearance. This model was fitted with a new 390 cui V8 Engine with 300 HP and 3 speed transmission. In 1964 the Thunderbird was restyled giving a more square look inline with the trends at the time. This model was very much a Space Race car with styling queues taken from the space programme. The seats supports are mounted inboard giving the appearance that the seats are hovering. The dashboard instruments are round like Sputnik satelites, the wipers and heating are controlled using T shaped levers mounted on the dashboard. In the overhead console there are butttons to control the flashers and warning lights for the seatbelts. Even the steering wheel moves to one side to enable easy entry and exit of the vehicle. The best feature of the 66 model is the sequential rear indicators. The rear turn signal consist of 3 bulbs that flash in turn very similar to the new range of Audi's however Ford had developed this technology 50 years ago!
This beautiful Thunderbird was manufactured in Lorain, Ohio in 1966 and fitted with the 390 CUI 315HP V8 and 3 speed Automatic and finished in Brittany Blue with contrasting White Pearl Vinyl interior. The vendor states that the car is in beautiful original condition and is rust free. Even the fuel gauge and rear sequential indicators work perfectly. She was purchased from a dealer in Florida who purchased the car locally from a collector. Included in the sale are a set of new OEM front seat covers. The vendor has also fitted a modern Holley carb with electric choke and petronix electronic ignition to make the car more useable. The orignal carb is also included in the sale. The vendor states she is ready for the 2017 show season and is ready to be enjoyed. Original Thunderbirds in this condition are a rare find.

BUT I DO REMEMBER BEING IN THIS CAR WHEN I WAS 5 YEAR'S OLD. . I use to play like I was in a space ship and liking all the chrome inside. .. and how the steering wheel could move left and right ...

Such a beautiful car, surprisingly these 66 models are super cheap these days (for classics that is). Trying to convince my dad to get one these for us to work on.

I never knew that fender skirts were called spats over there. But, on the other hand, I bet "fender skirts" sound funny to you.

I never knew that. I thought spats were an American phrase. Like you have spats over your tuxedo shoes but who knows 😂😂

Since you are over in UK you might look into an overdrive unit to cope with the high cost of gasoline. Gear Vendors in El Cajon, California, USA is one of several overdrive makers you might investigate.

A person would have to use a LOT of gas to pay for that overdrive unit! Wouldn’t make sense!
