what do you guys think about the results? would love to hear your thoughts 👇
watching it back now, I feel like she low key looks the same LOL 😂 better than looking worse though, right? excited to see how she looks in the future!
Could it be that she’s already root bound?
@@wildfern😂😂😂 for a calathea, not regressing is progressing 🙌🏽
@@Wanderlust2602 could be 😮
It’s not the easiest calathea. She looks good to me!
I really like that you put the entire experiment in one video. There is so much more we can take away from it and learn that way. Thank you.
I love those videos which come with updates, it's instant gratification ❤
API stress coat. It's a water softener for fish tanks. Put a very small amount like half tea spoon every time you water. It takes chlorine away from the water which causes calathea to go crispy around edges.
Omg Fern you have been in LOVE with that calathea for SOOOO long now and finally you have found the solution for her. She looks amazinc! I can’t believe it. I think pon is incredible it’s no wonder it’s sold out all the time. Very happy for you, Yay! 👏👏👏
I love seeing progress & updates on plants, and it's fun watching you test new methods! 💕🥰
I just saw that Calathea in the store today, I didn't buy it, but wow, yours looks a lot better!! I've got about 150-ish in my office - lots of Calatheas and Ferns, and have them all together right at my desk, so "in sight." I recommend treating Calatheas exactly the same way you care for a fern, exactly. - And yeah, for decades I've been a chronic under-waterer & never-feeder to my plants detriment, but I found a method that some people won't like, bc aesthetic this & aesthetic that. I have a small white plastic name tag in each plant & I write the month & day on it every time I water. What a Game Changer!!! No more sticking my finger in constantly! Now I walk around & just peak at the tag & can tell when I should actually start checking for real. Now my plants are doing much better and I am way, way less stressed about problems, but I am also switching my Calatheas to water. I've never used pon. I'll be interested to see the updates on this :)
She looks so much healthier. Leaves look firmer and not as droopy as when you transferred to pon.
She is looking just as good as before, which is better than going downhill. Good job.
Wildfern, I wanted to thank you, for putting me onto an awesome on-line Plant seller, in Ontario. I ordered 2 plants from them. 1st Ever on-line plant order for me. I had watched a video of your's from 11 months ago, and you said the name of the nursery. So I looked it up, and the lady actually called me, because of an ordering Glitch. I mentioned How I found out about them, through you. She said They love you and really enjoy interacting with you. Thought YOU might like to hear that. :)
I was born and raised in Sidney on Vancouver Island, moved off the Island at 44 yrs old, I still miss the ocean and the beaches and the Smell of the ocean. Wouldn't go back though, it's changed too much, and I want to remember it, the way it was.
Hi Fern!
I have had this plant for about a year now. Still in soil. From what I have noticed, you absolutely cannot let the plant dry out while the new leaves are in their straw stage and hardening off or you’ll get the speckles on the outer part of the leaves. I have been using Foliage Pro liquid fertilizer at a weak strength and have not been getting those spots as long as I keep up with not letting the plant dry out.
I’ve never used pon but if your pon is drying out maybe increase the watering before it gets to the empty line and see if that helps 😊💚
I loved seeing this video and watching your journey with this plant. I became obsessed with this plant after seeing it on your channel. It took a over a year but I came across it in a local grocery store. I was so nervous about this one being beyond my ability but have found it to be a lot easier than I expected. I think you’re on the right path and she’s going to reward you with lots of beautiful growth 🥰
after a longggg asss day (week, really, even tho the week isn’t over yet) you have no idea how good it feels to lie down to watch a new video from you 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Awww enjoy!! You deserve all the relaxation 💞
Perfect timing. Just got a Calathea Orbifollia...again...When my cat was a kitten he attacked the first one. But he's a good boy now 🧡🌿
This is the plant that brought me to your page! Can't believe it's been 3 yrs.
I absolutely love when you make videos like this! Your monkey tail progress video is one of my favorites and i rewatch it over and over again! Id love to see this style of video on your philodendron domesticum. I believe its the one thats putting out the double leaves right? We would love a whole video like this for that specific plant! That would be awesome to see over many months!
All my calatheas live in self watering pots and are so happy. I cant wait to see how son does!
I swear by growing marantaceae in pon. I have there 2 marantas (for 3 years in it now), my stromanthe triostar, and 3 calatheas (1 year in pon) - it´s the same like with alocasias. They love it. However, I don´t recommend putting any plant from soil to water - it killed my 2 calatheas (Makoyana, Musaica) that rotted away beyond saving, while 3 calatheas did well. I´d go from soil straight into pon - I find it much safer.
Your calathea slowed down for a while - but that´s normal. It happened to all my calatheas too after the transfer. They are working on their rhizomes, when they seem to slow down - it´s only temporary. I´m sure your calathea will do well in it 🙂
Mine improved over and beyond once I gave her a thick mossy top coat. Also I always use rainwater with marantae despite living in the relatively clean environment of Tasmania.
Mine crisped up and died. Next time I get one, I’m gonna follow these steps exactly. Or just put her in water. I love your results. Also, I think the spotting is fertilizer burn. You are amazing for documenting this for us. I appreciate you.
this is the one calathea i can't give up on, it's just too pretty. i'm on my third one now and i have her in a self watering pot - so far so good
I think you did a great job 😊 it might not be growing much, but its still alive and looks good for the most part🎉
Omg i LOVE calatheas so much and every time I’ve ever owned them they just spontaneously combust it’s so not fair
omg I FEEL YOU lol
Love the former-Fern check ins! Such a beautiful plant 😍
Thank you for sharing your journey on this, have been considering doing the same with my calathea rattle snake plant. 😊
Your plant looks stunning after putting it in pon
Yes, totally the Right Answer. I have mine in Pon and she LOVES IT🌿And they Bloom😁I hope mines bloom.
Mine still failed in pon, but they lasted longer than I expected because I’m still very new at plants. I think I just need a bigger water reservoir than what I used. I do enjoy videos like this that show progression.
I love seeing the changes over time 🌱😀🇨🇦
Awesome!! I did the same with my also favorite calathea. Seeing the progression over time makes me feel that was the right move for my warscewiczii. Thanks for documenting this and awesome video 😁
This inspires me that I should put my Domino Peace Lily in semi hydro...or at least in a self watering pot!
My Calathea has been doing good in my new mix. 2 part airoid mix, 1 part Fafard indoor connaisseur potting mix, than I add extra pumice and pool filter sand. Tons of air and the sand keeps the soil from retaining too much moisture and getting compact. I also add a healthy amount of worm castings and use chicken manure fertilizer. Good luck!
Watching this while battling trips on my calathea 😶 love your videos! ❤️
I transferred my Calathea Warscewiczii into a self watering planter with soil and it’s been a fantastic combo! I chopped all the tatty growth and it is growing back like mad. I will say, this one pretty much has to have distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. I have a couple of other calatheas that are not as picky but this one always gets those yellow and brownish edges if I use tap water.
Yours looks beautiful! I’d say it is definitely a success!
I absolutely love these videos that show the whole progression of the experiment, with updates. Thank you for sharing 💜
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed :)
So glad to watch this video after a tough day. I hear about calatheas not liking tap water so often, I'd love to see you do another experiement: take 2 calatheas (maybe cuttings from this plant?) and use tap water on one and filtered/tank/deionised water for the other. And maybe test your tap water to see how hard it is first? It'd be really interesting to see the results
My water registers as a zero (the strip literally doesn’t even change colour haha) so I don’t think it would make much of a difference. I’m super lucky to have such high water quality here, I even water my carnivorous plants with it 😮
A very timely video for me right now. I have ordered this plant from an on line grower and I am a little nervous with this plant because I killed one about 3 years ago and I don't want to kill this one. I have upped my planty game with various new grow lights all over my house so I think I have a better shot at making this plant happy and I have been watching a lot of videos about pon and I was thinking this plant might do better for me in pon so I am very glad to see that it does work and it did does well in this media. I think this calathea is my favorite too!! Although, Sheffield Made Plants in the UK has an amazing Rufibarba (Elgergrass, he calls it). It's just gorgeous so I have my eye out for one of those next.
@@furio1467 Thank you, I will look for this!
Hi! :) As for the crispy leaves, it stopped happening when I started adding a fish conditioner (used for aquariums) to the water.
I have always had this problem with Chlorophytum Green Orange and Microsorum crocodyllus, but now I don't see it anymore - and I regret that I got rid of calathea before I discovered it.
I've got the idea from the "Sheffield Made Plants" channel, he talks about it a lot and says that there is a difference on Kalatea too. I recommend everyone to try it, it works for me :)
Thank you for sharing the video, the plant is looking great. I believe that some issues like crisping can relate to water quality, they don’t like hard water which I have in my area of the UK so I use a filtered water and this resolved the issue for me. Good luck, hope it continues to grow well for you. 🙂
I really love Calatheas and have a few varieties myself, including the Warscewiczii. I have trans potted all of them into Leca. So far so good. Calatheas thrive better in warmer climates like Sydney Australia, where as, where I live is closer to Vancouvers climate. My calatheas, too get crispy edges, which I assume is due to the cold. Sem-hydro seems the way to go. Love your Warscewiczii. So big and lush!!!!! Great video 🥰. Keep us updated!!!!
Thanks for doing this, I have been thinking of doing this for awhile now to my diva Calatheas so it’s great to see the results before I do it 👏👏
Love the pattern on the leaves. Sshes a beauty . Definitely considering doing pon
I put several of my calathea in SWP’s with pon and they LOVED it 🎉
…. Upon further thinking, this one ALWAYS had crispies, no matter what I did to it, unless I had it in like 90%+ humidity lmao 🤦🏼♀️ note I said “had”, she gone now
I love this video! I love that calathea and I'm so happy it's doing well for you! I'm excited for more plant updates for this growing season ✨
I think you may have cracked the calathea code! I have been killing them. Do you think they like distilled water? I have heard that. Love your videos! You’re a joy to watch! 💚
Such a pretty Calathea! 💚
Thank you Fern. I’m definitely going to try this with my calathea warze’s.
I don't have the calathea you have but I also only have two. One sitting in straight nutrient water doing great and one in a mix of Leca and MAB Grow (AUS version of PON). Working like a dream, they seriously came back from the dead. I have no doubt yours will grow beautifully 🌻 I have also found them to be heavy feeders, I give full strength every two weeks and top up with plain water if needed in between. I find it interesting how different it is for everyone
She looks amazing Fern 😍🍄🧚
My calathea thrive in the summer and suffer in the winter (I live in Edmonton and don’t use humidifiers lol), so they basically don’t actually have net growth ever. But I love them so I still have them.
Just picked up one of these beauties at Canadian tire. ❤ kinda want to go grab a few varieties to play around with in semi hydro now
Hey Fern it's Jason it's been awhile I hope you're having an incredible Sunday Fern I have good news I'm moving out of my trailer and getting a house in 2 months I am so excited😂🏡💯
Yay Taylor Swift cup! Happy TTPD Eve!
Omg I was gonna say those exact same words 😂
I struggled like so many others with my calathea too. But since I started only using rainwater to water it it's been going much better. It's because the chemicals used in our tap water to clean it are too harsh for certain plants like calathea and spiderplants. It ruins the cells in the leaves causing damage similar to this. I'm not saying that's why for sure every time but it could be. It's only what I've heard and what's been working for me. Of course it's still a challenging plant and changing to rainwater isn't going to solve all issues.😂
Gosh I only have one calathea but since you first showed your warscewiczii I've been wanting one 😅. It's such a gorgeous plant and I'm obsessed with vervet leaves so 💁♀️😅.
Now that she is properly hydrated, I’d try giving her a grow light. I know she doesn’t like sunlight, but my maranta really enjoy my barrinas. I haven’t yet tried calathea, but even my ferns love PON/Barrina combo too.
I have tried out so many plants to see which is the most worthy to be displayed in my Taylor swift eras tour the movie popcorn bucket 😂
I agree with letting it water root for a minimum of one month. Some folks stick in water for a week and think that is enough. The longer the better.
I have this calathea, and tbh if it didn't have a water globe in it, it would have died a long time ago. It's an incredibly thirsty plant, even compared to other calathea and maranta. Gosh she's pretty though.
Beautiful plant! It is looking much better! I have one i find mine do so good in leca, and I fertilize with 3 part GH.
Thank you so much :)
I love this plant and have had two, but they’re so freakin needy that I got rid of them both because I can’t put up with that. Like calathea, pls get it together. I need a little bit of self sufficiency. Good luck to you! She’s stunnin’
my calathea ornate, calathea stella are in pon and they love it!
My Calathea is thriving in pon.
Where is your “mother of plants” shirt from??❤ love your videos
Try dechlorinated water for the burn on the tips?
This actually has me considering trying out semihydro for my calatheas 👀😅 my orbifolia is giving me a hard time and my beautiful huge white Star that has had spidermites soo many times 😭
You can keep them in a closed glas, what I prefer. Its more beautiful and you can use Soil.
literally just picked up a zebrina last week at home depot! cut all the roots now it’s in just water 🤞🏼
Ahh I love the zebrinas too!! So gorgeous. Hope she grows beautifully for you :)
Una maravilla tu casa con tantas plantas 😊❤
Maybe use distilled water?
I had a Calathea in one room and noticed the crispy leaves. Moved it to where my other calatheas were and grouped them together then added a mister / humidifier and it reversed the crispy dried leaf😢 areas. I don’t see any crisping now with soil. I’m still interested in pond for some of my thirsty plants. What is in pond??
I did try but got this explanation. lol... "Ponds are bodies of freshwater where many plants and animals live. B. Fish, turtles, snails, cattails, and algae all live in the water of ponds."
Calathea don't like excess minerals in water from tap water or too much fertilizer, that's probably causing the yellowing on the leaf edges
I have a musaica, a rattlesnake and a Rosie that are all doing beautifully. But my zebrina and white fusion are huge drama queens. I think I will try the pon experiment with them because I am out of ideas.
I have grown some of my calathea in water and they thrive! Only way I can get them to survive in soil is if they’re in a greenhouse like environment. They’re such annoying plant, yet so beautiful! So of course I keep torturing myself with their drama and buy more 😂
Me panicking when the foam piece fell out of the water gauge. I’m scarred from last time. 😂😂
I mainly grow in semi hydro, mostly anthuriums, a few monsteras, philos, and alocasias. They all do just fine. I had a few begonias and the leaves were always crispy. My watering was pretty consistent. I’ve been told by a bunch of people on a fb group that it’s simply because I use tap water. So…..I got rid of all of my begonias because I didn’t want to deal with different types of water to use. So maybe yours doesn’t like tap water either? 🤷🏻♀️
Calatheas do not thrive in my home lol
I have 1 that's doing well and the other couple are just starting to come around with spring 😅
Also... anyone else SOOOO pumped for TTPD to drop tonight!?! (& the other Reputation hints that she's been dropping also have me so excited)
Yes I’m DYING omg I can’t believe we get to hear it so soon!!!
@@wildfernit drops at like 1am Atlantic time, but I'm always still awake at that time so I'll be doing a full listen before bed 😂😂
Love it i think it looks 👍 good better than i can do lol
I’ve been wanting to get one but she is intimidating 😳
I should try putting my calathea in pon. I can’t keep up with the watering, and she looks kinda eh… 😅
I think that calathea needs higher humidity and thats why youre getting crispy leaves.
I gave up on calatheas 🤪🤪🧐😂 my crystallinum has been putting out many babies but I don’t know if I leave them or separate them from the mama..
I don’t know what happened…
My happy, one year old Jungle Velvet Calathea put out 3 stems of beautiful flowers. I moved it 2 feet forward in the tent to have a better view of the flowers and she went into shock and totally crisped up. A plant friend said to chop it off at the base and wait.
Thankfully I was able to take good pictures to remember her.
I think moving her into a brighter spot caused her demise.😢
I’d say it’s a success.
Isn’t crispy edges also due to low humidity? I know you mention you have about 50% but I think they’ll do better with 80%, have you considered sticking in cabinet? My personal experience with pon, the positive is only temporary as was my case with alocasias ( I water propped for 8 weeks), it started off great but by month 6 in pon, they started to hate it. So back to soil they went.
🥰
Maybe some old soil roots are rotting and bothering the new water roots🤔
❤💚
You don't rinse your pon, Fern?
I got confused by the Feb 2023 🤣🤣

I heard they don't like tap water
Difficult plant
i had the same kind of damage on the leaf (crispy spots inside the top of the leaf) - my conclusion - that happened because of lights. it had started on the new leaves after i put a growlight not far from her, and after i moved her away from growlight - the problem disappeared on the next new leaves
