    Quick fix for glasses: Take out the cheek pads and use a pony tail elastic to squish in some channels. Works fantastically.

    One thing I've always hated and distrusted is when you see somebody start reviewing (with their "honest" opinion) something they take out of the carton or is obviously new. You properly tested yours and then gave your opinion which is a much more honest and trustworthy review...thanks and respect

    Adding my opinion into this. I’ve put ~25k km on mime. I love this helmet. As mentioned it’s not amazing in the rain due to the top vents not closing, I’ll occasionally get water pooling on the inside lip of the face shield in HEAVY rain but it hasn’t caused any huge discomfort. I wore it through Death Valley in july where it was 50.5deg C and I don’t think o could have done that in many other helmets. Amazing bang for the buck.

    I have the exact same helmet. I used to remove & replace the visor quite a bit.. Then I taught myself to dip my head before looking behind me. The wind then push down on the top of the visor rather than up on the underside... Worth trying.

    Good review, I've got the regular MX9 moto version with no visor and a bigger sun peak.
    Its definitely brutal at high speeds, but I ride a 250 so I'm usually cruising around 60-70km on the roads anyway. The trick with the shoulder check is to kinda look down and behind you instead of out to the side and behind if that makes sense.
    The transitions visor seems perfect for someone like you, on dedicated trail days I have to bring 2 pairs of goggles because it gets real dark the woods. I know your not riding single tracks but you get back into some pretty good stuff on that 1200 and I'm sure you know clear vision for spotting your line is a must.
    I put around 5000 miles on mine, got hit by a car and bought another one with the insurance money. The padding was getting a little rough but it went through a lot of sweaty dirty trail rides so that's expected. Even the paint job is quality, The trails get really over grown here in the summer so I spend a lot of time headbutting brush, plus I always set my helmet on the ground so the top gets scuffed but it usually cleans up nice.
    Nothing to say about noise, the full venting and goggles are horrible for noise.
    Overall great helmet for the price, highly recommended either version. Just make sure to try one on, the bell has a unique shape.

    Just brought one of these, used for first time today in very hot weather (for UK) for what we call green laning. I was very pleased with the comfort factor and as you say very well ventilated. I did not have a problem with noise but my bike is fairly quiet. Brought this helmet because I have got to an age that I need to wear glass and a visor is easier then goggles, I have no problems with glasses fitting inside the helmet, in fact much more comfortable then my GT-Air. Good, honest review.

      I tried a GT air on a couple of years ago and I had the same problem with my glasses. I ended up getting an LS2 Evo carbon instead. A far better helmet for less money in my opinion.

    Hi Tim, I purchased a non MIPS MX9 on closeout, to use as my ATV helmet. Much to my surprise, quite often I grab this helmet over my Shoei Neotec, when going out on the bike. I like the fact that the eye port is large enough to wear goggles, and the face shield will close , over goggle straps. Stay safe, Rich S.

    I’ve been using the MX9 MIPS for 5 months (6,500+miles) and everything from 22 F to 100+ F 40 mile commutes and its very comfortable. The head does bobble a bit at 70mph+ and the noise it up there but tolerable.

  • @douglasross4629
    @douglasross4629 3 роки тому

    That was a great review. I've just gone and bought one today.
    Like you say, once it's on you don't feel like you're wearing a helmet. I had it on for a good 30 minutes in the shop and there were no pressure points or discomfort anywhere.
    I just hope the vents don't let in too much water, because over here in Scotland it does tend to rain on my days off when I want to go for a ride. Lol

  • @onseki1774
    @onseki1774 4 роки тому

    I've had mine from 100 degrees down to 18 degrees and in the summer its an absolute dream. In the cold not so much. I have snippings of quilt liner jammed behind the crown padding and in the forehead roll right now for a little extra warmth. My chin gets absolutely blasted in the cold. The visor's antifog works pretty good as long as you stay moving, kind of sucks in the city on a humid/cold day. All in all definitely worth the money.

    • @sooperfy
      @sooperfy 4 місяці тому

      true but its easier to fix issues with cold then hot when it comes to helmets. like a full face mask or half mask. plenty of thermal masks and that will easily fix that cold issue. cant do that with issue with hot weather. That or get a helmet for both seasons I guess lol

    @ronharshfield6771 5 років тому +1

    Tim, Thanks for reviewing the Bell MX-9.. I keep looking at it as the "next" one, but don't need another one just yet!
    I spent the $600+ on a Shoei Neotec after reading numerous reviews of multiple helmets.. While it's a great helmet overall, it is far from being quiet and doesn't flow a lot of air through the mouth vent. I also have a Lazer Monaco Window Carbon Fiber helmet. Very light. but it's hard to find! It has a Transition face shield. Love it, but just can't justify getting a new shield for the Shoei. I also tried a Scorpion EXO-AT950, but the sun-screen lever broke on the first use and overall it just felt cheap compared to either of the others.. Just my opinion, I'm sure a lot of people are very happy with it!

  • @orangelion03
    @orangelion03 5 років тому

    Finally =)
    Have had a non-MIPS one since 2015 and I have absolutely no regrets. Fit can be tailored slightly as the liner and cheek pads are removable and the pads are availble in several sizes. The removable bits make them easy to clean. I wear 3M safety glasses with thin temples and have no issues with the lack of channels most of the time, but it is a problem if I'm wearing my Rx glasses. I wish Bell had made the peak easier/quicker to remove...I take it off when I slab and have dropped the thumb screws and washers a few times. I wish the first open detent was firmer...tends to close itself at moderate speeds (not an issue behind a tall screen). One negative is that the top of the helmet opening (at the forehead) is fitted like a normal full face and I have not been able to find goggles that fit properly (would love that option when things get dusty). If anyone uses this lid with goggles, please respond!!

    I've got super basic Oakley Flack glasses that do well in that helmet. The temples bow out and create good space in there without pressure. Ya, though, they ain't cheap. The rose-colored prism lens cuts right through shadow/bright lines and, it's true, illuminate dim conditions in a most delightful way :-)

    I bought it because it fit really well, but I have no windscreen and at 60 mph there's a LOT of drag pushing my head back. Guess I'll have to put the visor in my backpack while on the road.

  • @gcprost

    Thanks for doing this. I am wearing a Bell helmet that is 10 years old. It is hard to get rid of it because it is so well well ventilated, quiet and comfortable. It is a 3/4 with a peak but it doesn't pull my head around. I is not suited for off road use. I ride with the visor up 95% of the time because I have good wind protection on my bike. Just over the windshield I have a rain and bug free zone.

    It really amazes me how many helmets do not have channels for glasses. I wear glasses but opt for contacts on the bike most of the time for fogging reasons. I have been thinking of the transition lens for my Shoei, carrying a clear lens uses a bunch of space. How dark does the shield get? It looked a bit overcast during the video so I guess it didn't get to full dark?

    • @FTAAdventures

    Just been to look at these helmets with an open mind after watching your review, it feels a comfy helmet and not to heavy compared to my current flip front. I think here in the UK you only get the clear visor not the transition, but I need to make more enquiries.
    Didn't seem to do much for noise reduction. Its a toss up between the mx9 (£189) or the O'Neal Sierra 2 (£149)
    I wear glasses while riding and struggled to get them on in the mx9.

    I owned this helmet: here’s my pros and cons:
    + style: simple and classy for young and elderly
    + easy washing and cleaning
    + the visor wash the raining water to the side of the visor in faster speed (40-50km/h) because the design makes it possible
    + fit and finish perfect
    - the front nose is so dirty when riding past dusty road even 20-50 meters, get pretty dirty very quickly
    - the peak is slightly short and doesn’t protect the Sun rays good enough
    Besides, I wish Bell keeps this design but improves more parts to make it the best budget with safety features adventure helmet in newer generation

    Tim, question: I have one of these and have been “breaking” it in. I was wearing it today and after about 75 miles I was starting to get significant neck fatigue. This is the first time I have experienced this. Also, I’m not overly impressed with the Transitions face shield. It doesn’t seem to darken enough for my liking. Thoughts???

    • @FTAAdventures
      @FTAAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      The neck pain could be the peak visor if your windshield isn't tall enough to push the wind over the helmet. The tint seems to get darker as the helmet gets more sunlight but its never a fully dark tint. I found it to be useful but not as dark as a fully tinted shield. Hope this helps!

    What size is your helmet? Would you say they run big or run small?

  • @Loiczzr
    @Loiczzr 5 років тому

    I have this helmet, for the price it cant be beat. I bought it 3 years ago, rode about 16k miles in it, mostly street use (i commute to work on the bike) i bought it cuz riding off road in my Arai rx7 was way to hot in las vegas desert. Definetly noisy helmet but if you are going to rack some miles you should wear earplugs. After 3 years the padding is getting loose a little so soon will be time for a new helmet.

    Hey Tim I hope you’re well? Just a quick question but do you miss the Pinlock insert on the visor? Have you noticed any big differences with it not there? Steaming up etc?

      @FTAAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      I had this helmet before the Shoei with the pinlock and I did have a lot of issues with this helmet fogging up. Not having that issue with the pinlock so I will be investing in a Transitions lens with pinlock soon.

      Definitely not as quiet, and it didn't last as long. It is a great helmet but the padding wore out fairly quickly.

    Hi Tom, regards from LatinAmerica. I read all comments before asking this, so here I go. You said that SENA clamps doesn't fit on the helmet and you used something else but my english is not good enough to understand. Can you please share this? I'm about to buy one of this helmets but I need to be sure I can set a SENA 10C Pro on it. Thank you very much, I'm a recent follower of you and you have been very useful for me because in my country there's no shops for ADV, less a shop where you can ask or try before purchase.

    • @FTAAdventures

      This helmet has a mount for that Sena but it tends to pop out. I used an adhesive called Sugru on mine, its a putty similar to playdo that hardens when it sets. Just the mount with Sugru and then you can clip and unclip the Sena. Good luck!

      FTA Adventures thank you for your quick response Tim (sorry I misspelled you name before). Yes, I know what Sugru is and sounds like a nice solution, no I have no doubt from know. Kudos!

    Hi Tim, thanks for your great videos, although I am not a very active follower i have been watching ALL your videos and find them very useful.
    Question for you: how would you compare this helmet with modular Scorpion helmet you recently reviewed? I'm considering these two for my next buy. Many thanks!

      I have the Scorpion modular and it's very comfortable. I had to switch the cheek pads out as they were a bit tight but it was not an issue switching them.

    Hey Tim, awesome ride you are on. I just returned to N.H. from a 33 state/53 Nat Park & Forest ride (20,666 miles). It would be great to say hello when you're headed to/from Acadia as you pretty much have to ride by my home (NH Seacoast) to get there. I'm just about over the post ride blues and ready to turn some corners. Safe travels. BTW, what do you use to keep your visor clean? I've been using H2O and a few drops of baby shampoo in a small spray bottle.

    Color coordinated with the background! Nicely done! 😉
    Expanding on the review... I have the "older" non-MIPS Snow version, and the newer MIPS MX version (no shield). The older version visor has severe harmonic issues above 40 in my application (NC700X, factory windshield & no windshield), so it's been removed. The new version does not have this issue. I'm not sure why (Tim) had trouble mounting the Sena clamp. Both of mine are using the clamp. They are both noisy, but I use a set of inexpensive ear plug style (sleeping) ear buds that work well, in combination with a pad style neck collar. I haven't yet done 6~12hr rides, but I do ride 3~4hrs straight (no breaks) and they've been quite comfortable. I wear glasses and agree that arm channels will be a great benefit. It's hard to beat the bang for the buck.

    Hi Tim Loved your review of the helmet. I would have liked to have seen a rating system for each category like 1 to 5. Then average all categories together to give an average overall rating.. Other than that thank you for the review.

    Hey man which one was louder between the bell and the scorpion exo? Which you would take if you were mostly in hot weather and on road? Thanks a lot man!

    • @FTAAdventures
      @FTAAdventures  4 роки тому

      They were both pretty loud but the Scorpion was also much heavier so I'd go with the Bell personally. I'd say they are about equal in noise levels. With the visor open on the Bell there is really good air flow, not as much as a modular raised up but plenty of air flow.

  • @ZafodB3
    @ZafodB3 5 років тому

    I have a Bell MX9 MIPS helmet and I have to agree with everything you have said about it. I have had mine for 18 months now and I can add to this review. First of all the screw-caps that hold the visor on the helmet do loosen (or possibly some joker loosened them for me while on my mirror) and when they do you get an annoying vibration sound. That little snap on the chin strap has pulled out on mine from over use (?). And, the little tab on the one D-Ring that helps you find the D-Ring to thread the strap properly has fluttered to shreds and is now useless. My small SENA SMH5-FM mounting clip did attach easily without the need for using the adhesive pads but mounting its small soft microphone was difficult with the large chin airflow vent and, because of wind noise, is terrible for phone conversations as well as the speakers are also lousy above 50 mph in this helmet. I have yet to experiment with the boom microphone since I dont make phone calls on my bike and have only recieved one. I have wireframe transitions prescription glasses that fit nicely in the helmet but by new transitions wireframes are dificult to get over my ears. I did not get the transitions visor on mine. Hence yes I agree, a channel for glasses would really be a plus for the MX9. All in all still a great helmet!!!
