  • Haunted Mansion Stretching Room Going up! The Haunted Mansion is a classic Disney ride but like all the rides at Disneyland they do break down from time to time. When the Haunted Mansion broke down we were offered a trip back up the stretching room. The Stretching Room at Disneyland is a real elevator that lowers you into the ground whereas, at Walt Disney World, the stretching room ceiling rises to give you the illusion that you're moving. Back in 2016, I went to visit Disneyland with my dad. The Haunted Mansion is both our favorite ride (I have a half sleeve tattoo of the tightrope walker painting lmao), and so after everyone got out of the stretching room, we went back over to try to take some photos of the paintings. We were hovering around the doorway and a cast member inside the room told us we could come inside and get better photos if we wanted. It was awesome being in there, just us, able to see every detail and look around. But then, the cast member came up to me and asked me to come over towards the back wall, where a panel was.
He told me he had a very important task for me and asked me to press the button on the panel. The stretching room started to reverse and we went back up to the top, and picked up a new batch of people from the foyer. Legit one of the best days of my life, it was really rad he let us do that.

and it was on my last day there I can remember a lot cus I was an 8-year-old wuss and I keep on crying, the last thing I wanted was a breakdown but now... I will stay in Disney land until I have at least one breakdown XD

I won a walk through tour of The Haunted Mansion back in 2014. One of my best memories of the park. I was a cast member and Disney held a Halloween bash for my area of the park (New Orleans food service). They gave us the Golden Horseshoe for the evening after closing and we had an absolute blast. What I had been told was that the first 30 people to line up would receive the walk through and I jumped at the chance to tour my favorite ride on foot. I was one of the first in line lol We saw everything, a cast member tour guide brought us to the hidden cemeteries. We took the elevator down (show mode off) and got to go behind the scenes of each part of the ride. I even got to go see where the dancing ghosts behind the glass that create the illusion for the ballroom. Can confirm that ashes are frequently spread through out the mansion and when it happens they have to close the whole ride down and have a sanitization crew come in and make sure it’s clean again. For sure one of my best memories and will always remember it ♥️

As a full time wheelchair user, we have been up the stretching room elevator many times. It is eerily quiet in there. When the ride is operating, they have us stay by the wall right next to the door while everyone files in. When all are in, it is clear for us to roll out. We've never seen the scene after exiting the doom buggies. So "come back, come baaack" is something we've never heard in person.

I’m actually surprised, as this dispels a rumor I had once heard. That the DL Haunted Mansions stretching rooms (there are 2) didn’t have enough lift to lift the full room of people back up. That they were designed to do s low descent at full load, and only lift a much less occupied elevator. It seems I was wrong. Which is actually pretty impressive when you think about it. They have to be about the same size as the huge elevators that were in the WTC towers.

One of my favorites was a couple years ago we were on space mountain around closing time and suddenly about 3/4 of the way through we stopped and kinda sat there for a few min then the lights turned on! WHICH WAS CRAZY COOL! We waited for a bit then a cast member finally came and gave us a push to go down the rest of the way. When we got back to the station they let us ride again! When I was very young, we went to EPCOT before the 2007 renovation. I remembered the ride very clearly, especially when the ride would stop constantly, wait a while, then start again.
Another time, about 5 years ago, we went on Tower of Terror. We got stuck with a funny group. So we went to the maintenance service elevator, and all is normal. Until we get to the shaft. Right before the shaft, the lights part from the middle. Then, we get stuck in the dark for about 10 min. before the lights came on. We were stuck then listening to the evacuation spiel, all while not getting evacuated. Then, a guy comes on the speakers, and we got the best ride ever. I knew of the drop patterns at the time, and this was one that never saw the light of day. It was absolutely CRAZY! Especially the rare effects which sometimes aren't seen! We then got off the ride and entered a cast member elevator, which was small, but fit the entire crew of guests in our elevator. We then walk through the cast member corridors within the attraction, go up this elevator where we thought it was going to drop as well. Which brings us back to the loading area, and we get right back on. During the Frozen Fireworks show. Best ride I've ever had.

And then we got off at the loading area and we got to go back up the stretching room. It was so cool and interesting to see. Glad you got to see this!

A couple of weeks ago I was in Disneyland Paris and I was riding Phantom Manor (the European version of the Haunted Mansion) and the elevator in the stretching room I was in didn't go down for some reason. However, the show mode started as usual. Being a huge fan of the ride I found this odd because I knew that if the show mode was on the final effect that showed the phantom in the ceiling would occur even if the elevator wasn't working. So I started thinking that since we didn't go down we would have a chance to see the phantom really close. God, I was so correct. The phantom was literally a few feet away from us and scared the hell out of all those who didn't expect it as I did. Nobody told us anything and the elevator started working properly after the show mode had ended, and we went down with no music or anything else. It was the most amazing thing that ever happened to me on a Disney ride!

I got to experience my FIRST in-show exit!
First of all, it was my first day at Disney. First ride of the day. We were going through Tomorrowland and saw that they had just opened the doors for the Carousel of Progress. So we got on, and everything was going fine. Then we got to the Scene when they blow a fuse. After the first time, we had gotten stuck. About 2 more times past and the audio COMPLETELY cut out. So when it went dark, everyone got out their flashlights and shined it at the stage (I can confirm that the animatronics still move while it's dark). After the audio cut out, we all took turns saying the lines for about 3 more times. I kept saying to my mom, "I really hope we get an in-show exit". She had no idea what it was, so me and my brother explained it. One more time passed and we FINALLY got an in-show exit! We got a FastPass and got to walk up to the stage and a little kid got to go and pet the dog.

We were stuck in that position for around 45 minutes until they could pull our vehicle into the exit dock. After we got off the ride, they offered put us in a new vehicle and try again. It’s almost felt as uneasy going up as it is going down. The Haunted house really is something special.

It does look like the Walt Disney World/Tokyo Disney room, though, as the ceiling itself seems to ride..great illusionm, right up there with Pepper's ghost in the "endless" candlelabra hallway, and, of course,. the big ballroom.

there was this one time when I was maybe around 10 or 11 when we went to Disney California Adventure. One of the rides broke down while we were in the cue. It was the Hollywood Tower of Terror and we had just gotten past the preshow on the boiler room floor. While we were waiting, the main lights went on and a staff member came in and told us that our elevator car had experienced technical difficulties. Since we couldn't go back through the pre-show doors, we were led through the staff hallways back to the entrance where we got our fast passes. It gave us a look behind the scenes at how the staff manage to get to each floor easily

It was the last day my pass worked a few years ago and my group went on Winnie the Pooh. At the scene of Pooh eating hunny in the wall the ride stopped and we got to exit the ride from there, and that’s how I learned that some cast members hide a little rubber duck around the ride and move it around all secret like.

I've been evacuated from the Paris Haunted Mansion (Phantom Manor) and had an inshow exit. We were at the ballroom scene so got escorted back to the entrace. As the Paris one is also and elevator we went through the stretching room and some secret doors oposite and up the service stairs to exit by the ride exit. Was a rather cool experience.

I was stuck on Indiana Jones right about where the rat scene is. We were sitting there for about 10 minutes and when the ride came back on, the car hydraulics had go sync up to the part of the ride we were at. So for a good minute or two we were not moving forward, just being bounced around until the ride was in sync and then continued the rest of the ride. It was so funny to see just a bunch of people bouncing around and not going anywhere lol
