This version has gotta be one of the best songs ever recorded. James hit his stride with the vocal delivery and guitar, the bass player is complimenting him perfectly and CARLOS is FEELING IT.

Take to the highway, won't you lend me your name?
Your way and my way seem to be one and the same.
Mamma don't understand it, she wants to know where I've been.
I'd have to be some kind of natural born fool to want to pass that way again,
But I could feel it on a country road.
Sail on home to Jesus, won't you good girls and boys.
I'm all in pieces, you can have your own choice.
But I can hear a heavenly band full of angels and they're coming to set me free.
I don't know nothing 'bout the why or when but I can tell that it's bound to be,
because I could feel it, child, yeah, on a country road.
I guess my feet know where they want me to go walking on a country road.
Take to the highway, won't you lend me your name?
Your way and my way seem to be one and the same.
Mamma don't understand it, she wants to know where I've been.
I'd have to be some kind of natural born fool to want to pass that way again,
But I could feel it on a country road.
Walk on down, walk on down, walk on down, walk on down, walk on down a country road.
Na na na na na na na na na na na, country road, yeah, walking on a country road...

Just watched James preform this one live from 1971 (BBC In Concert ) . On stage with James . Leland Sklar - bass , Russell Kunkel - drums , Carole King - piano , yes Carole King . I know they go way back still that is something to watch even now . Looking at this line up from 1993 it says from decade to decade only the best make music with James Taylor . That is my idea of a music legend .

The groove laid down by Carlos Vega and Jimmy Johnson is *legendary* and Carlos' little solo bit over the bar line fits incredibly well with the tune. And he was pretty much just phoning it in here, to some degree. I've seen him play this live, back in the day...and he REALLY laid into the tune. His little solo here was great, but (as a drummer) the stuff he played when I saw him live once or twice in the 90s was incredible. He was playing the next iteration of his DW kit then too, as I recall. It was a smaller 5-piece kit, with a 20" kick. I remember thinking "Yeah, that's going to sound pretty thin." LOL...wrong.
I was never really a huge fan of the DW kits (had two of them myself), but John Goode really timbre-matched the hell out of those tubs.

I was thinking that too as I watched this.
The drummer nailed it. There is a great blend of tension, release and dynamics.
He played his drum parts to fit the song loosely but tight if you know what I mean...

Only recently came across this video. As both a James Taylor fan (as well as a fan of live performances, in general), this ranks among the top that I have ever seen. James is spot on and his band is as tight as any I've ever had the pleasure to see. Also very cool to see Livingston grooving in the background. Agree with the other commenters insofar as JT being a national treasure.

I first saw this in 93 when my bro inlaw recorded a disney channel promo and gave me a copy. This was part of a long exclusive interview at James' secret hideaway. I suppose I've seen every recorded performance of country road, but none even approach the level of splendor this one does. Right here, the indirect maestro that James is gets picked up and carried to a new loftiness by the ensemble, which reciprocates in James, himself, soaring as never before. Perhaps never again. This may be the glory of mankind that should be delivered to posterity. Its the version I sing, and I've done it dozens of times. WOW!

Randy Meisner of the Eagles played bass on this song when it was recorded in 1969 (released in 1970). This was right before he was in the studio doing backup vocals for Linda Ronstadt where he met future Eagle members Glen Frey, Don Henley and Bernie Leadon. Super talented guy.
