Extracting used vape carts using ethanol

I don't recommend you actually do this, this is just an experiment for fun.
I go through a lot of Carts and pods, as you can see here.
I'll be showing you another method on how to salvage the extra oil out of your used Carts, pods, and containers.
The first step is to get some isopropyl alcohol and clean the outsides of each pod and cartridge to make sure there are no contaminants or bacteria.
Here I have my lovely assistant cleaning each of them and tossing them into a beaker, be sure to remove any bits of silicone or plastic.
Once all the pods and containers are wiped off and cleaned, high-proof alcohol was poured into each container to sit for a bit.
I then poured some high-proof alcohol into the beaker.
For each of the jars that had some concentrate really stuck to them, I gave them a quick scratching with a glass stir rod before pouring them into the beaker as well.
I then used the rod to stir the contents of the beaker, then put it on a hotplate at a low heat to help the alcohol dissolve all the thc it can.
After stirring and heating for about 10 minutes I strained the liquid through a coffee filter.
I then poured the solution into a larger flask to begin boiling it off.
This took quite some time to accomplish. I could have collected the vapors but my water pump was broken so I had to let them just go into the fume hood. Be extremely careful whenever you are evaporating alcohol such as this as the vapors are highly combustible and may explode if not properly ventilated.
Please don't try doing anything with explosive vapors such as this unless you are aware of the dangers and have appropriate safety gear.
As the alcohol content lowers are the water content rises, you can see some THC starting to separate out of the solution entirely. It also started to get pretty cloudy, this is due to the high water content compared to alcohol content.
I transferred to a beaker at this point as I wanted to ensure ease of collection once it started to boil down to a concentrate.
I took some extra alcohol and swished it around in the flask to get all of the concentrates. As I pour it back in you can see that the white cloudiness disappears as the alcohol content rises compared to the water content.
I proceeded to finish boiling off the rest of the alcohol in the beaker until there was about 20ml or so left.
I then poured what remained into a small glass jar, and set up a little rig so I could use a heat gun to remove the concentrate that was stuck to the beaker.
I poured some alcohol into the beaker and scratched at it with a stir rod to ensure I collected everything into the glass jar.
I placed the jar onto a hotplate and let it stir for a bit at low heat, before letting it settle for a while so I could remove the water with a syringe.
The water is cloudy because of the ouzo effect, when you add water to alcohol certain oils are no longer soluble, and they come out of the solution in the form of microdroplets that make the solution look cloudy like this.
One of the most important steps when dealing with concentrates and solvents is to ensure you do a proper vacuum purge. Here I am using a vacuum pump I made in a previous video along with some rubber adapters to use the jar itself as a small vacuum chamber. This allows me to heat the concentrate more easily and also ensures a more effective vacuum as there is less total volume, but using a regular vacuum chamber would be fine.
After that I was left with nice clear amber oil, I poured it out onto parchment paper and used a heat gun to get it all out of the jar. After letting it cool down, and it became a nice shatter consistency.

I love this! Much better than when I sit at my table and hold an enail to my rig in order to heat and move the reclaim lol.
I've done a simpler method of simply swishing all the carts in grain alcohol, letting it evaporate in the sun or by a heat vent, then pour it back into an empty cart. About 32 or so empties to fill one back up, and the taste was actually decent.
Even more simple method in my part 2 video linked at the end
pop the mouth piece off, hold upside down over a jar with pliers and heat with a hair dryer or heat gun. It will all run out into the jar and leave almost no residue. Why make it take more than a few minutes?

I’ve done this and recovered multiple grams of good quality and full spectrum extract. I think the key points from my experience is to use a high purity solvent, do a pre-wash of unopened carts to remove anything undesirable that also dissolves in said solvent, and to run your extract through a filter before concentrating it.
Very interesting. If I had access to these resources, I probably would have done this in high school.

I like to mix the two concepts. I put a cup of milk in a small beaker and put in the concentrate. Then I mix it with a gallon of milk and drink some every morning

Bro. I took the mouthpieces off, while holding them with a pair of plyers and used a Blowdryer to drip 15 old ones into 1 "new" vape to fill it to the top. Took about 35 minutes.
but he had like 150. Would have taken him close to 6 hours to do it your way. his way was a more hands off approach and superior as he got the oil that was also in the atomizers.

Hey! Great minds think alike! Lol I've done this exact process before, it's a great way to stretch the supplies out when you're getting low or have a shit ton of old carts laying around. I knew my chemistry hobby would come in useful one day🤣. I did a vacuum distillation when I extracted the bulk of the solvent though to recover the alcohol, it's always fun when I get to bust out the glassware...

Lol hell yeah. I can relate. Back when I first started smoking, roughly 25 years ago. When we all ran out of our seedy, brown, bricked swag, we'd meet up and scrap our pipes spotless then take knife hits of the resin. Woooo! It was so harsh and nasty but I would be baked af, layed out on the floor. Best part is just ball of that tarry resin the size of a marble could last 3 of us almost a week, the worst part is the come down included a terrible headache that only went away with a nap.
Man in all my years of smoking I haven't seen someone make sure they don't waste kush to this level I've seen people be like you spilt a couple flakes but never seen this lmao too good

great vid!! def got some ideas from this to improve my processes! :D also if you have a vac oven you can do it in a way doesnt winterize the product by getting everything pretty cold (to avoid shock to the glass) and use butane as the solvent (i prefer to offload it first into a cold jar from the cans and stop slightly before its empty to minimize mystery oil) follow a similar process to your minus the hotplates and stuff just let it air purge till its to a point it can go into the vac oven. ( also its super obvious and shouldnt even need to be mentioned but sadly does xD do that shit outside hahah
I use 100% isopropyl alcohol which seems to be a bit faster at dissolving thicker oils in my experience. A critical thing I always do though is that I pre rinse all of my carts with it before opening them up to dissolve the contents. This pre-wash reduces the carry over of contamination from the outside of the cartridges which can include skin oils, trapped dust, and other stuff you might not want to be vaping.

My chemistry set was in my other house that exploded the first time I tried to repurpose my vape carts. I’ll go to the store to buy them until I can purchase a new home as well as a new set of beakers, syringes, heat guns, more beakers, tubes, heat resistant glass, and of course highly flammable high proof alcohol & I’ll put my Bunsen burner on 7 instead of 8 this time.

I know you shouldn't, but 99.9% rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol was pretty much the standard for making a cheap low-grade green oil. The bikers in Canada would do this back in the late 70's through to the 90's. I'm sure for centuries before that they used some sort of liquid to breakdown the oils and waxes then evaporate the liquid leaving all that THC Yumminess... lol.
I've done extremely similar on a stove top, first time was in the oven and I learned real quick why alcohol+contained heat do not mix 😅

Lol, I basically did this as a teen and exploded a bottle of small flask of alchohol on a burner that way.
I mean, they do mix quite well, thus why it's not recommended

My process with this is doing what you did then letting the alcohol dissolve to a level where I could transfer it to a Pyrex, then left the solution sitting out for 2 days, all the alcohol dried and i was wet with a similar but darker product. Was also using rigs.

@@TheFlexorcist If you end up smoking butane then you already smoked it in dog water oil. Purging reclaim wouldn’t do shit to remove butane because there isn’t any butane. That’s actually stupid. And also assuming that you are reclaiming bho anyway. Sure that’s what a lot of people smoke but this isn’t 2015 anymore. And as for purging yeah sure if you want the purest reclaimed wax go for it but you legitimately get the same exact result from baking it. And also doing it with iso. Do it how you want but to attempt to try and say that it’s unsafe if actually done in another proper method then I don’t know what to say. If you care about chemicals entering your body you literally shouldn’t be smoking anything other than the highest end solvent less wax. If you have ever smoked street wax you have smoked something fucked. Period. That’s something that everyone should accept. Same with carts.

Ive used a heat gun to melt the residue, and then I've used a glass ampule to slowly collect all the extra run off, but this is beyond insane. Good on ya man

This could be dangerous as you could be leaking heavy metals from the cart with the solvent and with the added heat. You should get it tested for heavy metals to make sure it's safe.
You should be testing your carts for heavy metals before you smoke them in the first place then it's a non issue

My boss had me try this on all our returned vape carts and the final oil turned out dark brown / black. I told here theres no way we are putting that out as a product. I have no idea what metals or synthetic materials are inside those carts. I would not smoke this.

I clean my jars with everclear and then reduce it until it gets thick and add it to edibles or to a cookie.

I was gonna say, I came here to see if anyone was discussing this... Back in the day we used to make iso wash all the time. Obviously if you dont dry all the alcohol out it isnt good for you, but I was wondering if he knew something I didnt.
If you let all the alcohol dry it was super fine, but we even hit up some batches that for sure we should have let cure longer *shrug*

Heat ur leftover carts up with a lighter/blow dryer and put them thread down into a sock, then put that sock inside another one and spin it in a circle for a minute or two to get excess oil near the holes .

I do this a lot because I prefer tinctures but some cards I have found I have glue paint and other unnecessary things on them so just be aware of which cards are using usually metal or ceramic ones are fine with alcohol. Just make sure they don’t have any painter glue on the inside.
