As a slower, 40 something runner, I'm still fiercely competitive (with myself), and make huge goals that scare me a little, excite me a lot, and give me memories to be proud of for life.
I honestly think the secret to my (slow) success is that I love food, and see it as a fun part of ultras. Whether it's aid station food, or yummy snacks I bring, ultras are just a reason to EAT! 😂 I want to be doing this in my 60s, and though I'll never make the podium, I'll have decades of awesomeness to look back on.
I didn't realize Katie Schide was from my neck of the woods! I'm also a White Mountain hiker/ mountaineer.

Nutrition is one thing Hayden Hawks talks about in every one of his interviews. He always describes how he has nutrition dialed in now more than ever and how much it has boosted his performance. I think he talks about it more than any other pro.

Hello Eric, thanks for sharing this, it's always interesting to listen to the thoughts of someone with such coaching experience. It's beautiful to see how nature looks there, I love the beginning of autumn where the sun is shining, not roasting, and the vegetation takes on all those shades of yellow and red. I hope the hassle of smoke goes away fairly soon.

Another thing I noticed is that winning ultra runners often have day jobs that involve a lot of standing and light walking (supermarket, sports store). Do you agree?)

Yeah, good good video. It really speaks well. I have to stay on my normal diet is a very low carb to zero carb type diet for some health issues. I have at races. I’m going real cars. I am usually running for the first three hours in a fasted state, but soon as I feel my body get dragged down then it’s almost like too late, so what I find is I’m taking about half the carbs maybe then I used to that good cause I take that box down even more. It’s kind of interesting but I’m not at the point where I can just run fast for a big long race but that’ll get me too. It’s really science.

The perilous cycle of comparison - I find being competitive is a powerful motivator. I've been running ultra's for a little over a year and really enjoying the challenge. I'm a mid-packer, but prepare and plan as if I was competing for a top position. At the end of the day I'm not beating anyone, and I love the social and community aspect of it all. I still want to do my best and see where I can push vs back off. Still good to be reminded of the importance of removing the comparison aspect and instead just focus on running to one's full potential.
It's interesting you bring up the aid-station aspect. The last race was a local friendly race with 10 runners on an 8km loop x10 (I made it to 7) - and because I treated it slightly less serious I had no aid-station plan. Looking back, the 6 aid station stops could count for half a loop extra, if not more. I could have easily have cut them down to 3-5 minutes, and perhaps also had enough going to complete the 8th loop. It's a good learning experience though, and good to hear your perspective on it.
Also, see you've been rocking the Nnormal Kjerags the past few vids. Enjoying the ride? Thanks for the video!

Where is the smoke coming from?
