This World War 2-era film - originally titled as "The Bridge" - is a documentary presented by the U.S. Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. It was produced in 1944 by Documentary Film Productions, Inc. and sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. It was directed by Willard Van Dyke and written by Ben Maddow.
The documentary explores the economic and political importance of Latin America to the United States. It shows the endemic poverty and recent industrialization of South America and looks to such postwar advances as air travel and transportation, the "bridge" that will eventually link the United States with its neighbors to the south. The Bridge is an artifact of an era characterized by a strong narrative of belief in President Franklin Roosevelt’s "Good Neighbor" policy.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
The history of Latin America during World War 2 is important because of the significant economic, political, and military changes that occurred throughout much of the region as a result of the war. In order to better protect the Panama Canal, resist Axis influence, and optimize the production of goods for the military effort, the United States through Lend-Lease and similar programs greatly expanded its interests in Latin America, resulting in large-scale modernization and a major economic boost for the countries that participated.
Foreign Policy Association:
The Foreign Policy Association (formerly known as the League of Free Nations Association) is a non-profit organization founded in 1918 dedicated to inspiring the American public to learn more about the world. The Foreign Policy Association aims to spread global awareness and understanding of foreign policy issues.
Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs:
The Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs was a United States agency promoting inter-American cooperation during the 1940s, especially in commercial and economic areas. It was started in August 1940 as OCCCRBAR (Office for Coordination of Commercial and Cultural Relations between the American Republics) with Nelson Rockefeller as its head, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The agency's function was to distribute news, films and advertising, and to broadcast radio, in and to Latin America in order to counter Italian and German propaganda there. The OCIAA grew to be a large Federal agency with a budget of $38 million by 1942 and 1,500 employees by 1943.
On March 23, 1945, the agency was renamed the Office of Inter-American Affairs (OIAA) with slightly changed powers.
Good Neighbor policy:
The Good Neighbor policy was the foreign policy of the administration of United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt towards Latin America. Although the policy was implemented by the Roosevelt administration, President Woodrow Wilson had previously used the term - but subsequently went on to invade Mexico. Senator Henry Clay had coined the term Good Neighbor in the previous century.
The policy's main principle was that of non-intervention and non-interference in the domestic affairs of Latin America. It also reinforced the idea that the United States would be a "good neighbor" and engage in reciprocal exchanges with Latin American countries. Overall, the Roosevelt administration expected that this new policy would create new economic opportunities in the form of reciprocal trade agreements and reassert the influence of the United States in Latin America; however, many Latin American governments were not convinced.

I like how this video is talking about how South America needs to stop exporting so much, but when they started to Nationalize their industries in the 1950’s onward they had their governments overthrown by usa coups
All of those coups were masterminded by Allen Dulles director of the CIA. He also masterminded the assassinations JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X because they were working for peace.
Nothing beats the intro music of the old videos :)
Reminds me of the music in old Looney Tunes cartoons
Thank you! I always was interested in how South America was involved in WWII
Brazil is the only South American Country to send an expeditionary force. 25,000 men participated in the Italian campaign from September 1944 to May 1945 capturing more than 20,000 Germans. They lost 948 men.
The Brazilian navy sank 12 Axis submarines while losing 36 ships to their attacks. They also participated in convoy action.

México send some "volunteers" too. I know México isn't strictly in South America, but some, let's say less literate followers of this channel, think so.
@@maelgugi hahaha..how dare you!.. and I'm laughing one year after your post.
Oh well..
@@stannousflouride8372there were some others SouthAmericans who lived in United States who also faught , such is the case of Manuel Antonio Prince Veroes, a Venezuelan who faught in the pacific as part of 182nd infantry regiment of the United States
Thank you for posting these fascinating films. You do seem to have the BEST films in your Archives! ;-)
Amazing as always. Thanks for this!
GREAT DOCUMENTARY
Muito bom! Very good!
this reminds me of the videos from the movie UP
the true extent of US involvement in S.A. pre-WWII is not at all widely-known, but ridding the skies of Nazi interlopers was a task worthy of Indiana Jones and Allen Dulles, who was a NY lawyer on loan to the commerce dept 1940-1* when he went to la paz to wrestle LAB out Nazi hands, etc. (*from "inside latin america" john gunther, 1941)
good read: "Pan Am At War" by J.H. Hill and Mark Vaz, pub. 2020, informed by many new FOIA documents etc. (drama? think: churchill and hap arnold meeting in churchill's bunker during the battle of britain with jaun trippe of pan am)

It seems like no one knows my country which is named Suriname. Even thought it's the most forrested country in the world. 95% is green and is part of the Amazone. I hope my country can become known one day because they offered raw material for the usa to make planes in ww2. There is even a German ship sunken in our river named the Goslar.
i love watching old propaganda 🥰
Im pretty sure that Latin Americans were not all living this lifestyle at all.
Argentina hace la diferencia..."" 💪🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Amazing video
Great illustration of biased and prejudice way, "reporters" painted south America. As if there weren't developed cities in S. Am, and there weren't parallel situations of the poor sectors of the "developed" nations...
So patronising..!!
The irony: today "developed" nations tendencies, are pointing back to the uncivilised ways of slow food, local consumption, and slow pace of life; they looked down...!! Lol
Wait, Rio de Janeiro is not in this part of the map, this is Porto Alegre
Must...destroy...rainforest...Must mass produce...cacao....coooorn....
Bolivia.exe has stopped working
They don't have any vegetables to eat because they're burning all the corn!!
