This car was originally sold as the Daewoo Lacetti in South Korea. It was also sold as the Buick Excelle, Chevrolet Lacetti, Chevrolet Nubira, Chevrolet Optra, Daewoo Gentra, Holden Viva, Ravon Gentra, and Suzuki Forenza. This car is actually still being sold new today in Uzbekistan as the Chevrolet Lacetti
I believe the sedan version of this car was sold in North America as the Suzuki Forenza.

A friend of mine wrote off his mother’s Chevy Optra5 (Canada) when we were in high school .. we were out ripping around town and he took a turn way too fast - flew over the curb broke off both axels blew out 4 tires and set the airbags off lol. It was a fully loaded one too! Alloys and a sunroof… I thought it was cute but yeah… that was a chaotic night 😂 his mother replaced it with a highlander
I honestly dont know if ive ever seen one of these. I see a Suzuki in general maybe once every couple months. I love reviews of these oddball obscure vehicles

Back in the day my father rented a Suzuki Grand Vitara and he let me drive it. It was...an experience. lol
You didn't like it? 🥲 The final model of the Grand Vitara is one of the cheapest used body-on-frame 4 wheel drives in Australia.
Vitara is a decent vehicle
In Venezuela those were sold as Chevrolet Optra Hatchback. Mine is a 2009, manual transmission, it has leather seats and sunroof. As a college student I love it and it takes me everywhere. Such a good option for people who want a cheap car
In Australia It was called the Daewoo Lacetti and then the Holden Viva. It's predecessor was the Daewoo Nubira and it's successor the Holden Cruze (so many different names)
All came in sedan, hatch and station wagon.
I had a Nubira sedan and replaced it with a Lacetti sedan which still looks good today IMHO.
I will say this every common issue these had was either backed up by a service campaign/tsb or a recall. The most common issues/complaints are airbag light (cause by the wiring under the drivers seat), limp mode caused by what i believe was is either a failing map sensor, and timing belt failure. Most of these get scraped cause of broken timing belts, the interval is only 60k miles but they tend to break cause of the tensioner design/way the belts routed
The last Suzuki dealership we had here disappeared overnight. Literally overnight. The folks who worked there left work one evening came back the next morning to big signs in the showroom window saying the dealership had closed and they were out of a job.

Aah the (in)famous Daewoo. Pretty durable car for its money it maintained properly. Also sold as a "heart attack of America" in EU lol.
I'm 24 and have a love/hate with working automotive jobs. I said the hell with being a mechanic cause I knew I could do better. This rebadged multicultural vehicle helped give me motivation to get my bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management. I remember emailing GM about parts compatibility, trademarks and design pattents as a teenager. I also had a Saturn L-Series (Opel Vectra B) and was rebuilding a ecotec in my highschool automotive class. I got documents i received in emails and I spoke with a couple engineers, a couple names I hadn't recognized but they were high up with GM. I was pretty lucky to get intouch with who I spoke with all thanks to GM :)
There is one of these in orange near me. I never knew it existed and was stunned when I saw it
9:16 Daewoo actually became GM of Korea. Cars that were originally badged as Daewoos were rebadged to have a Chevrolet or Holden (in Australia and New Zealand when the brand still existed) badge. However, the Daewoo name is still used for their other ventures, including commercial vehicles, construction equipment, shipbuilding etc.
Daewoo made TVs at one point, just as Samsung made cars (originally Nissans) and became Renault Samsung (making for example a Renault Fluence using the Nissan 2.0 and Nissan CVT, or the Renault Koleos version of the Nissan Rogue) and is now just Renault Korea IIRC (but stillbadged as Samsung cars in Korea).
They can call it whatever they want north korea gm always daewoo.
Basic transportation but fairly attractive, and I love it. Just the right size. I have seen them around in NJ and NYC, and one fairly recently.
The Pontiac G3 was also made by Daewoo in Korea. There weren't too many Daewoo's sold in the Americas as Daewoos, most were sold as Chevrolet or Pontiac cars, with the US getting these Suzuki badged cars.
I know a lot of cars, and I mean a LOT of cars, and this is the first time I ever hear about the Reno! I bet it's bulletproof like most Suzukis

It was recalled for headlight modules that caught fire. Alongside the Chevy Aveo.

@7:55 these had a 10year/100k mile warranty. However MSRP was about 17-18k. For that price you got a multicultural GM vehicle designed by Holden, with a family 2 series engine with Opel roots built with Chevy parts in a Daewoo plant in Korea then sold at Suzuki dealers where salesman and dealer technicians were a bit unfamiliar with them.
Another forgotten Suzuki of that era was the Esteem .especially the wagon mated to a 5 speed manual

Zack, GM's decision to force Suzuki to sell re-badged Daewoo rubbish in North America was the final nail in their coffin. GM's decision to sell re-badged Daewoo rubbish under their own brand names undermined and continues to undermine their tenuous grasp on credibility. 😉
@1:40 It's 128horsepower I had an 08 Reno and thats what the owners manual said. I believe wikipedia says 132
I had a 2005 Reno with fog lights and an aftermarket nice blooth radio. I had a bad experience on it with the antifreeze leak problem. It had a lot of road noise..
I managed a Suzuki parts department when this car was new. The Reno was the exact same car as the Forenza, just a hatchback instead of a trunk. We replaced a LOT of engines and transmissions in these cars.

@3:33 interesting... My 08 had the same radio except it had an Aux port on the front and it didnt say "mp3 in the corner" i think the second gen of that stereo had an aux port on it and a fourth button on the top

Yep, a Suuzki economy car without the famous Suzuki reliability, it seems like a terrible deal for buyers! In Australia, the Suzuki Ignis was rebadged as the first generation Holden Cruze, which is arguably the only reliable Cruze...

Small cars like this may be nothing burgers relative to the sports cars we know and love but they are artifacts of a bygone era. Loved the video.

In Australia, Holden were selling the Holden Astra (Saturn Astra, Opel Astra) which was not especially reliable long-term but was at least a nice solid German car which was nice to drive and then brought in this car (Daewoo Lacetti etc) as the Holden Viva which was neither reliable nor nice to drive. Needless to say the Viva did not improve Holden's reputation for making quality small cars. 😐
It didn't help that the car had been on sale in Australia just a few years earlier AS the Daewoo Lacetti before Daewoo went out of business in Australia (likewise the Daewoo Kalos (Chevy Aveo) that became the Holden Barina replacing the Opel Corsa version of the Barina), so it was obvious it was a hastily rebadged Daewoo! (Before it became an Opel, the Holden Barina was a rebadged Suzuki Swift just like the Geo Metro.)
They really thought they could slap a Holden badge on whatever Daewoo rubbish they liked…and people would buy it? 😂

As a Suzuki fan, that's not a Suzuki but a Daewoo; part of the bad GM badge engineering that killed Suzuki in the US

Suzuki makes the best little cars! We were very happy with the new Suzuki Every van we bought in Japan a few years ago. Please show us more of the rare Mexican market Suzuki cars that occasionally are seen in the US. Hopefully, Suzuki will find a way to come back.

They were called the optra 5 here in canada. The sedan version was the 2nd generation reasonable priced car from top gear. Chevy lacetti
I used to own one. Pretty reliable interchangeable parts. All cheap can last a long time

This is true today,but in the past four door subcompact hatchbacks weren't all that uncommon in North America...Ford Escorts,Chevy Chevettes,Ford Focuses,etc had 4 door versions,as well as two doors.

@markhealey9409 I once owned a 1982 Nissan stanza (purchased with 50k miles in 87) 4 door hatchback when I was in college. Auto, ac and 82ish horsepower made for a very slow but reliable car - transmission siezed at 130000 miles in around 92. didn't fix it but sold as scrap metal

I really like the way this looks it’s quite impressive to me tweaters I’m the doors auto windows and mirrors with a cd and mp3 functions match it with a bright color and a hatch and I’m sold!
I test drove one of these back in about 2014. It was an eight year old car and already was trashed, smoked in, and needed severe suspension work. I ended up buying a Volvo V70 wagon...
I saw one of these the other day and my girlfriend could not understand why I got so excited. They’re so RARE!

8:38 - Is this intended as fiction? GM had Isuzu as its captive import in the early 1970s. That gave GM the Buick Opel by Isuzu, the Chevette, and the LUV. It wasn't until the 1980s that GM *and* Isuzu linked up with Suzuki, and that's when the Chevy Sprint arrived on our shores. GM continued both ventures, and that eventually formed most of Geo's lineup.
GM did not learn from Suzuki. If they learned anything (and there's little evidence they did), it was from Isuzu and Toyota (NUMMI), not Suzuki. Suzuki was purely a convenient way to fill a hole in their lineup.
My aunt bought a 1 owner 10k mile red forenza for 10k flat “07 model bought in 08, died in 2015, went to Florida & back 3 times. Couches strapped to the roof. The radio was similar although it had an aux jack & it had cruise control. Head gasket blew at 105k

It does have lumbar and height adjustment.
I still see suzukis being driven by old ladies and as budget cars till this day , its suprising that they didnt profit enough to stay in the US, but mitsubishis still exists with their POS mirage, and average SUVs. They even tried to feed off the sucess of the eclipse coupe by tying its name into a small crossover that doesn’t even attract the same crowd.
What's even worse about the Mirage, it's no longer the cheapest new car in the US, but it's the slowest.
@@damilolaakanni you’d be stupid to buy that instead of a versa if you want the cheapest possible new car, or just buy a used car that’s way better to begin with little or no car payment, I feel like the only reason someone would buy a mirage is as a joke, maybe turn it into some joke of a rally car, they actually make a ralliart version of the mirage and it gets no performance upgrades whatsoever just stickers,cheap fender flares, and some red accents on the inside.

Suzuki US was horribly mismanaged, Suzuki Canada almost had enough to buy back the factory, Suzuki Canada had no financial issues despite selling the exact same products and they still exist to this day but they stopped selling cars as they were ultimately unable to buy said factory, they still fulfilled all their car warranties
Yo Suzuki I forgot about this brand they made some interesting cars. I remember them when they did that rebranded Nissan frontier they made can’t remember the name. And a car called the sx4

Definitely. It's because automakers don't try at all with this segment and make them feel as terrible as possible. If you look at international car reviews of small cars elsewhere in the world you can see there is a difference in quality, effort, and features in smaller cars. Yet those same automakers make their small cars in North America miserable affairs. Plus the looks. Those looks would have never attracted a large following by Americans.
Plus if you're genuinely on a budget these days a used car with cheaper insurance will be better.

These were sold under the optra name locally. i don’t think it actually shares anything from Suzuki. These things are purely GM+Daewoo.
When it comes to reliability, they are inferior in every way to an E150 corolla and N16 sunny. Hence the reason the former mentioned vehicles are worth twice as much on the used market despite being older in some instances.
There's a car that came and went without making any impact. This must have been what you bought if you couldn't afford a Civic and didn't want to be seen in a Hyundai or Kia. This car has remarkably low miles for something that was meant to be used and discarded.

It's a Daewoo Lacetti. It had several different names depending on the year of production and the country where it was sold, but none of them was the Kia Rio. This orange colour was available on the 2nd generation Kia Rio though.

For an inexpensive appliance, this car seems to fit the bill. Not sleek, not sexy, not fast, but it gets the job done. Turn the key and it starts, put it in gear and it moves. That's all you need for a vehicle of this price point.
