    I’m getting back into fishing but this time I’m wanting to get into casting around dams & lakes in Gold Coast hinterland. Hoping to bring your advice into choosing the right lures.
    Good that soft plastics are suitable.
    Would there be any point putting a scent or taste on the lures to keep them in the fish’s mouth, or are they just as effective without?

    Hey mate, I’m a keen bream fisherman but I’ve only ever caught them on bait. Done a ton of fishing up at Bemm fishing for bream and perch up the river and the channel are my favourite spots. I want to learn how to use lures for mainly fishing around my local river just down from my house fishing off the bank but once I gain some confidence I can’t wait to start throwing some at Bemm too! I have bought a few lures such as the double clutch, and z man grubs. What would be a good couple of lures you would reccomend for a beginner like me? Also could you describe the actions used and how deep to throw them etc? Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the good work mate 👍

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 роки тому +3

      All good, honestly for someone starting with lures and plastics i would highly recommend using zman grubz or slim swimz on on a 1/16 or 1/20 jig head. Starting off you don't need to do anything fancy cast, let the plastics sink for a few seconds and a continuous slow roll back. Once you start getting a few start adding some subtle pauses and lifts. Soon you start to feel whats working and adopt your own approach. But i would really start with those recommendations. Careful though as soft plastics and lures are very addictive.

    I'm new to fishing and your videos have been great to learn from. But I have a question- nobody seems to use Jarvis Walker lures and instead use bigger named brands. Do the Jarvis Walker lures simply not work or is it a bit of psychology- 'if I pay more, it'll be better' type thinking? Would love to hear your thoughts or even a video comparing them in use to the more popular ones.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 роки тому +7

      Thanks for your comment Iain. Its a great question. Jarvis Walker and some other brands are considered very entry level. There products work but they don't have the same build quality as known brands such as your Shimanos, Savage Gear, Daiwa's etc. The Jarvis Walker gear absolutely can catch all types of fish species but they often lack the swimming action, durability, hook quality, sizes of the better brands which means your catch rates aren't as high. Most anglers will start with many of the entry level rods, reels and lures and over time naturally progress to the higher end stuff. I hope that helps answer your question, ill try and get some more details out about this soon.

    G'day Alan that was great thanks ! Do you use a stinger hook with the Turtle Backs for Bream ? Also, I have fished SP's since about 2005 without a lot of success land based over here in the Glenelg River in SW Victoria ( did ok at Malacoota and Merrimbula ). When the water is clear and the bream are finicky do drop down your leader size ? I normally fish 6 lb leader but I am thinking of dropping to 4lb to maybe increase my hook ups. What are your thoughts ?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Tim, I've experimented a lot with stinger hooks in recent times but haven't used them a lot with bream fishing unless using blades similar to the ecogear zx stuff. You are spot on with bream being tough especially on clear days, they are a very clever fish and spook really easily. On those clear days they can see you and can be very timid complete opposite to overcast days where they are much more aggressive. Combination of dripping leader strength and working plastics slower seems to work well.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  2 роки тому +2

      Being 5foot 4 wont matter and there are some wonderful finesse outfits. Its more a case of cost as the budgets for bream outfits vary so much. Any 1-3 kilo rod paired with a 2000 or 2500 size reel is usually great. Plenty of good short shorter length rod too between 6 foot 6 inch and 7 foot

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 роки тому +1

      Your very welcome Mark. Getting line and leader right is a critical part of bream fishing. My goto is usually 6 or 4 pound braid with 1 rod length of 4 or 6 pound leader. When you buy the real high quality braid you can go a tad heavier. I have seen guys fishing on the ABT fishing which 2-4 lb line and leader in certain situations. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 роки тому

      Hi Samuel, I have several bream setups but they are all very light. Usually 1-3 or 2-4 kilo rods maximum which allows you to cast light soft plastics and lures with ease. A 4-8 kilo rod will be far too heavy for bream. My son, wife and I went to Lorimer West Gate Bridge 3 days (2 days from 7pm to 11pm) No fish😭😂.
    We went today to from 8.45am to 5pm. No fish. I used chicken. squid, blue bait, I even collected some Oysters, Mussels and 2 small crabs.
    Not a single bite! I talk to Dave, a gentleman who ferry bicycles riders across , he said, for the last 3 months no one catch anything.
    I even use soft, curly tail and hard lures.. bought from Kmart. No fish.
    We saw some big (breams or snappers) where the Ferry docks. But even with the fresh oyster and crabs. No bites. lol.
    Hot day today, Australia’s Day.

    ... These, smaller-than 70cm Minnow's, "Cranks" and the such similar fish alike looking lures: if they are not longer than 70cm - they don't need that mid-body hook, and it will just stack a lot more around while you are reeling, and not improve any your chances better than just a one good tri-hook at the back of the lure. In any such case, we always remove that extra mid-body hook, and always have the same, if not even better catch results, with only one, at the lure tail. And not worse catch results. Speaking the tips, that's today, on our behalf, for perhaps a very good one, while (in our experience at least) it is so. This is something that lure manufacturers also should also consider, the environment-wise, and production-wise, which will also benefit them a great deal, saving them a lot of material, as well :).

    $25 for a lure? Check AliExpress. Cheap and the fish can't tell the difference
