I just finished Jane Eyre and I have to say, I completely agree with what you guys said. I was so worried when I picked it up because it was like 500 pages of classic literature, but it flowed so well, was easy to read, and was incredibly compelling - so much that I read it in one week, while going to school every day, doing homework, working out, etc - I'm a busy person, so it's very rare that I read a 500 page book in one week. Just goes to show that I couldn't put it down. I even secretly read it in some of my classes, lol. Would absolutely recommend to anyone, especially teenage girls. I'm 18 and I've never related more to a character, even though our lives are so different. Agh. I'm in love.

My advice for getting into Shakespeare in particular, is to read the sonnets first. It gives you a feel for the language, and they are so beautiful, but also short!

With regards to book shaming, just remember that all classics started off as popular fiction first, so don't let anyone make you feel bad for preferring "low brow" stuff to the canon.
Also, totally agree with what you guys said about adaptations. I recently wrote an essay for uni about how the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice can be seen as a way of accessing Austen's world. It really helps if you're struggling with the texts.
    Loved the video x

Lit major here - No matter how hard I try I still can't catch the Jane Austen train. I've gone halfway through Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility. One of these days...
I prefer Elizabeth Gaskell's writing. Her syntax is so charming. North and South was a joy to read (the BBC drama is also excellent), and I'm almost done with Wives and Daughters.

I really needed some good recommendations. Firstly thank you of that. Secondly about Jane Eyre: I learned english as my 2nd language and we have read Jane Eyre in school after 6 years of learning. It was a really short version like 70 pages or so. And I have to admit I loved it. My english was terrible at that time but I was fine with the story and it was way easier than I expected it to be. However three years later I wanted to read the full version to see if I get on with it. And I did. My english got a thousand times better and I had no problems to read Jane Eyre in a week.
I would recommend it to everyone who is starting with classics. Jane Eyre is easy to read and good to enjoy AND something you sound really intelligent with when you say that you've read it.

Another good Jane Austen book I recommend is "Northanger Abbey" because it is light-hearted, quirky, and it explores a young girl stepping out in society and trying to figure things out and falling in love. It's quite relatable because the main character is a teen, who is struggling with awkwardness and messes up while trying to do the right thing and deals with peer pressure. It's really sweet and fun and easy to read.

I remember trying to read Wuthering Heights when I was about 15, and i just couldn't get past the language and I just started reading it again after 4 years and I'm so glad that I can finally get through it! It was so comforting hearing Sanne say that it is a struggle because I remember when I was 15 I felt like I was pathetic for not being able to understand the language in Wuthering Heights so knowing that it it isn't just me who thinks it is difficult to grasp at times made me feel a lot better.

I'm so glad you mentioned Sense and Sensibility! I've always been a bit daunted by classics and I've found them quite difficult to understand in the past but we read Sense and Sensibility for our A2 Coursework this year and it completely changed my perspective on classics in general! While it's highly possible that the reason I found it much easier to read is that I've now studied literature to alevel standard so have been guided through it much more I just related to it so much and absolutely loved it!

So glad you decided to discuss this topic! I'm a recent subscriber and I love your topics in general but this is highly relevant to what's happening in the "book world". People being elitist and stories belonging to a few people. I've done my share of being a snob in the past but now I keep telling people that books are for absolutely everyone and you can enjoy the classics and YA and everything in between. There is no hobby more accesible than reading! (well, except for the time thing but every passion requires time). Nice list of favorites! I've read them all and can wholeheartedly say that they helped me appreciate the classics. Recommendation: Persuasion, my absolute favorite Austen (and her best heroine in my opinion).

just listening to you and Rosianna talking about literature gets me so excited! as a fellow literature student I experience a lot of classic shaming at uni and it frustrates me so much that people feel the need to do that.
Jane Eyre is seriously one of my favourite books ever and I'm also a big fan of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, although I needed to read Brave New World a second time, because I didn't get the ending at all.

Frankenstein is probably my favourite book of all time and it was the first classic I ever read. I totally agree with you, I thought I knew all about it but really the novel is so different and so intriguing that I just got lost in it. I think, compared to the language used in a lot of other older classics, it's really easy to understand and get into and I always recommend it as the best place to start with classics.

Ahh, I love this! I'd absolutely love to see one on American classics as well! I have struggled through most of the classics I've read, including Dorian Gray, but I recently had that 'eye-opening experience' with To Kill a Mockingbird where I was like 'This is so much more fun than I'd expected it to be?' (If you do an American version, you have to include that one!) and I just got obsessed with it and it's really made me want to read more classics!
Also, that edition of Jane Eyre is absolutely gorgeous!

  • @missrosepip
    @missrosepip 9 років тому

These are all really great recommendations! I know it gets more difficult the older the text, but I've also noticed that a lot of readers never venture beyond the 1800s. For the more seasoned classics readers who have enjoyed the classic 19th-century novel I would definitely recommend giving some of the earlier novels a try - Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, Pamela, The Mysteries of Udolpho, etc. And for non-Brit Lit, I think everyone should read Don Quixote, which is really such a fun read. Some people get nervous thinking that classics are Serious Literature and don't realise that popular novels were still sold on entertainment value back in the day.

  • @RoseKeats

Loved this video! I've just filmed the classics book tag and between that and this I am now massively entering a classics phase. I've always been a massive lover of classics but I think one of the easier ones to read is A Tale of Two Cities - not too long or anything and I find Dickens is actually overall a much easier read than you'd anticipate.

I think the most important thing to do if you want to read classics but struggle with language (because you're from another country, for example) is to just keep going and everything will make sense eventually. ;)
Pleeeease do an American version of this! :)

I got into a lot of slightly harder classics through audiobooks. A lot of public libraries now have free audiobook collections and apps that mean you can listen to them on your commute or while you're doing something else. It was really handy that during some of the denser passages (like in Anna Karenina, the passages about agricultural policy in Russia..) I could phase out a bit and make a cup of tea but still have it read to me. Really helped me get through a lot of books that I just could not get through in print.

Classics are my great love when it comes to Literature, they're just so beautiful and perfect! It's American, but To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book of all time. Very easy, very funny, very beautiful. A Little Princess is one of the easiest classics to get through, I feel, yet still very beautifully written. That's the first classic I would recommend to someone who hasnt delved into classics yet. Anna Karenina is also a beautiful novel, though it does seem pretty daunting. It's easier than it looks though. I had the exact same experience as you with both Jane Eyre and Frankenstein, and both are in my list of favorite books now. Love this video!

It is nice to watch these kinds of videos. I could see how British literature took some getting into, but these familiar works really do help. I read half of them and my favorite is Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. These two novels were so brilliant and I agree that John Tenniel's illustrations were just so fascinating! I need to read some of the Sherlock Holmes series and something by the Bronte sisters, too. Sanne is so right about Jane Eyre. It came as a free book on my phones generic e reader app. I read it while I was in college entirely on my phone between studying sessions and classes. About 3/4 of the way through I bought a physical copy and read the rest that way. It was surprisingly easy to read but it's really long. However, it's completely worth getting to the end. On one hand, it's intriguing because life for the characters is so foreign to us, but on the other hand all the emotions are so relatable. It's really a great book to dive into.

Frankenstein is one of my favourite books and such an easy read as well. For Jane Austin I'd recommend Persuasion as its her shortest work so a good start to get a feel for her writing.

Great video! *Love* Jane Eyre and The Picture of Dorian Gray and I still need to read Frankenstein! "Monster" classic I'd recommend - Carmilla. I'd also highly recommend 1984 and Little Women. My favorite classic of all time is Macbeth.

Catcher in the Rye is my favourite.
And I remember reading Wuthering Heights in high school and really really liked it, even though during that time I wasn't much into reading. I could've just done Cliffnotes, but for some reason I pushed through because enjoyed reading it so much.

Haha I appreciate that it felt like Rosianna and I shared a cheeky 'that's what she said' moment when you said 'it's not that big.' Ayooooo!
I've never watched one of her videos before but I like listening to her speak so much! I'll get my butt on over and subscribe I guess :)

I think I will finally delve into Jane Eyre. I have been pondering it for over a year now so I think you have finally given me the extra push I needed. Also, please do the American classic books! That would be so lovely to see what you guys think. I studied American Classics, which can be daunting, but it would be nice to see a perspective outside the uni vibe. Also, Sanne, your shirt is absolutely adorable! Best wishes :)

I've always been daunted by classics. I tried pride and prejudices and just struggled so hard but I found a niche in children's classics like 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan that I really loved. I still do want to delve into the "adult" classics and think I'll try picture of dorian grey first as that one stood out to me most from the humour side of things! I did however read a quarter (I don't remember why I stopped) of Jane eyre and totally agree that it's so readable and easy despite its daunting size.
Thank you for this video it was very useful for me :)

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is kinda tricky book to read and it can be a struggle but once you get into there's SO MUCH to think about that it really changes the way you read. There were so many little epiphanies (pun intended) in that book and I highly recommend it.

Yes yes! I agree with Jane Eyre. I never read a classics before (in my country, we never asked to read ANY kind of literature to review which is sad). But Jane Eyre gave a satisfying feel after I finished it. It is worth a struggle. The first 50 pages were so hard to get through but after that I couldnt stop reading it. Thank you for your recommendations!! I'm looking forward to read Jane Austen's books.

I totally agree with you and your choices! I also suggest "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" and "Peter and Wendy" by J. M. Barrie, "The Wizard of Oz" by Lyman F. Baum, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson, "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov (if you are over 20, in my opinion).
For some non-English classics: "Anna Karenina" by Lev Nikolaevič Tolstoj, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez, "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende, "Il barone rampante" by Italo Calvino.
A Must-reads (but mostly challenging) are "Les Misérables" by Victor Hugo and "Il gattopardo" by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, too.

Jane Eyre is my all time favourite book and will probably always be my favourite classic.Great video this is so helpful I've read some but not many classics but I always want to read more. I read Pride and Prejudice and it put me off Jane Austen's writing a little but Sense and Sensibility has always intrigued me

As for approaching Shakespeare as a non-native English speaker, you can also read a play in your native language first to know what's going on (and possibly also appreciate the translation[s]) and then move on to the original English text for full-on origianl experience.

Classics are really daunting, and I have Crime and Punishment and other really long ones that I'm still struggling to finish, but I actually read Tess of the D'Urbervilles byt Thomas Hardy about a year ago and completely loved it. The story is just so engrossing, and things are so tragic for the main character that you fall in love with her! The writing is quite easy to follow, but poetic enough to resonate with you if you've ever been into the English countryside :)

I'm really lucky because I never had to "get into" classics. Both my parents have amazing taste in books so I just grew up around good books. The first classic I read was "Jane Eyre" when I was about 8 or 9 (though obviously, I didn't "get" a lot of it). Wonderful video and great recommendations from both of you! :) xoxo

Great list! Jane Eyre is in my to read pile but I keep avoiding it...
In terms of Brit Classics I've always found Persuasion by Austen is the one I recommend now to people (I adore it more than P&P) as it is v. short and v. sweet. Also Dracula by Bram Stoker. You think you know it but you don't. It's the only classic that I've ever found that shifts between P.O.V. in a very modern way and since it was published near the turn of the 20th century it's a really comfortable read (though a bit long). The edition I own is annotated so it has loads of historical background information which I adore but its not necessary to understand the novel.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic that many people read because it's completely modern and relevant. I didn't love it, but I know many who do, even if they don't like classics as much as me.
There is a whole sub genre to classics that doesn't have the vocabulary, all the books are short, and you can decide what level of depth you read them with. In my opinion, you should start with these. Ex. Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, etc.
For the kind of classics most people imagine, I would recommend Wuthering Heights and Les Misérables. These are harder, yes, but once you get into them the language is so beautiful.

Most of the classics I read, I read them for British and American Lit. I agree with you ladies, that there is a lot of classic shaming and most people feel the pressure to lie about how many classics they have read indeed.

I absolutely loved Frankenstein, and I felt it had a similar vibe to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, which is also pretty short as well, and soo worth reading. It's actually one of my favourites by now.
