I was fortunate enough to actually find one of those washed out railroad spikes! I play in Porter all the time if I’m not bushwhacking Cienega or Las Huertas!
Very nice getaway, and I'm jealous of your "living room"! Speaking of dirt roads, I used to be able to handle the "back road" route 165 from Placitas to the Sandia Crest Highway in a Honda Civic in the "good old days", but in recent years it has gotten so bad that I don't even try in a higher-clearance vehicle anymore. Do you know the current conditions of that road?
@@smnhc1 That's not good-- I thought it was usually closed in winter. I've been able to get to Palomas Peak TH easily but not sure about Las Huertas picnic area or Sandia Cave and on towards Placitas.
@@smnhc1 Follow-up: I drove it today, and it wasn't so bad. My cervical spine was not amused, but the rest of me had a great time! Las Huertas picnic area is a true gem, but has seen better days.

Very cool, thanks for watching!
Fantastic video, and I'm very thankful you shared the route. Thanks so much for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Last time I went down it was about 1.5 years ago and it was pretty rough. I might have to try again and make a video about it!
Also, one of our employees got her vehicle stuck on the better end (a mile in from the Crest rd.) in March because it was a sheet of ice.

@@bakarka No, it's left open in winter but as a true travel at your own risk experience with no plowing or maintenance!
