Sandia Mountain Natural History Center
United States
Приєднався 18 жов 2010
We are an environmental education center in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque, New Mexico on 128 acres owned by Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), and jointly run by APS and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS). The center has been teaching programs for students since 1967.
We provide Ecology Field Programs for all 5th graders in Albuquerque Public Schools, and for many from Rio Rancho Public Schools and other area schools. Our educators additionally lead statewide outreach programs, public events, teacher workshops, and design outdoor education curriculum.
** Please note that the SMNHC and its trails are not open to the public, except for special events.**
You can find more information about the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (SMNHC), our school, summer, and public programs; and access our lessons at www.nmnaturalhistory.org/smnhc .

Solving the Mystery of Birdhouse Ridge

Solving the Mystery of Birdhouse Ridge
Please discuss the inclusions of dark, greenish rocks that are commonly found imbedded in the granite, often flattened or stretched, especially in the southern foothills north of the freeway. I've seen old geologic maps of the sandias mention 'exotic terrane', are these rocks remnants of such terranes added onto the continent?
I should get one of those things for my yard. Figure out who is leaving half-eaten baby rabbits and rat carcasses out there. Probably a cat. Is there a certain camera you'd recommend?
I heard there is a manganese mine in that general area ...
Excellent ! Great wild turkey cam ! Pairs well with the song.
@@MongoTheMad Thanks, the clips were edited to fit with the different parts. And we get lots of footage of turkeys fleeing!
Hope you didn't get hurt at the end! Minor bruises maybe.
I was fine, thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing and educating. Have you been able to confirm that the mysterious noise was indeed the crow?
Everyone seems to think it was a crow or raven. Thanks for watching.
Another excellent video! Beautiful area. Thanks for taking us along! 👍 Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it
Definitely upgraded since the last time I was there! They did a nice job.
I totally agree!
Beautiful ! Thank you for showing us this.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this incredible location. Adding to my list of places to visit! NM truly is the Land of ✨🏜️Enchantment. 🩵
The 1750 date explains why the tower was built so low. At this point intime raiders rode horses. and would use the canyon bottoms to travel unseen. the torreonita was situated to observe the raiders, (Ute, Comanche, Apache, and others,) who were attacking Albuquerque (founded 1713,) and that canyon was an approach route.
These might be called candles, but please don't burn them in the house or anywhere flammable. They can spit wax and parts of the seed pods all over and burn the house down very quickly.
Good point, thanks for watching!
Love your videos! Beautiful setting. Happy kids! 👍 Cheers from Highway 53!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the humor! I've wondered about those trails that I see on my map, but never tried them out. Recently checked out White Rock Rim Trail which is very cool.
We will have to put that on our list to check out.
Gorgeous work my friend! This was enjoyable 🥾
Thanks for watching!
Thank you . We always enjoy the show!!! Keep trekking! 🏔️ 🤩
Thanks for watching!
thank you Sir
Delicious ! 😋
They are a special treat!
What kind of flavor do they have?😊
Like...pine nuts!
Hard to say, a little like a cashew maybe?
Me and 2 friends smoked a blunt in the back little room you crawl in the end.
That ain't it. You gotta go further up the canyon for the 35 ft. waterfall that the canyon is named for. But, yeah, that is "a" waterfall.
Excellent thank you
You are very welcome
It sounds so beautiful ❤
Thank you for posting. Great advice !
Glad it was helpful!
Bro, you’re supposed to take the skin off! It’s just weird how Americans don’t know how to eat fruits but if I gave you a cheeseburger, God help us all.
Prickly Pear fruit on a cheeseburger sounds delightful! Thanks for watching.
Many don't realize but the Holy Ghost Creek was Forrest Fenn's special place. (The Blaze)
Interesting, thanks
Which mountain bike you are using?
Fezzari Abajo Peak. They are now just Ari Bicyles.
@@smnhc1 thanks 🙏
I recently read about the history of the Sandias, which said there was a 500 acre wildfire in the Manzanitas in 1989.
I bet that’s it! Thanks for the info!
A classic. This is a 3-water-bottle hike for me if I am climbing it.
I miss Albuquerque so much one day i shall return and go on this wonderful memorable hike.
Thanks for watching, NM is an awesome place.
You are so wrong, typical NM crap!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I wonder how the trees are doing there in light of climate change.
Trees struggle in many ways from climate change. Hotter temps, less water, more fire, and insect infestations are just some of the ways they are affected. Thanks for watching.
That's what I call "getting away from it all"!
It is a very remote area for sure.
When I was in the area last year, I talked to a local ranger who had been there a couple of years. He was a Cibola National Forest ranger. He had no idea that the Sandia and Manzano Mountains east of Albuquerque were also in the Cibola National Forest. I showed him on a map. It has bits and pieces all over the state.
It is strange how fragmented the Cibola NF is but that's how government operates sometimes.
Really enjoy your content, is this a personal channel or through some organization?
It is through the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center which is an environmental education center run by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.
I was the subscriber who asked the question, thanks for the video! I did make it last week in my small SUV without scraping bottom. Love it over there.
Glad you made it and thanks for the inspiration.
I drove my rental car on 165 which worked out fine but was probably a terrible idea 😂 I love the crest and palomas peak!
I feel like its very suitable for a rental 😉
NM 165 is pretty rough these days.
it definitely needs some work!
Pine tree leaf burn easily
Could you peel off the hairs?
Thank you so much for this video! They are, by far, my favorite bird! Such beauty, agility and big personality in an micro package. This video really made my day. Thanks!
Our pleasure!
Just went here with my kiddos today, it was definitely fun, but a lot of crawling for me compared to them lol. Those stairs might keep me from ever going again though!!!
It's a fun little trip, thanks for watching!
My guess is Bigfoodeer scat.
Bigfooelk scat actually! Thanks for watching
Visit 1,000 flowers or just 1 feeder? 👍🤣 Really enjoy your channel and content!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you.....I thoroughly enjoyed making this hike with you....
Glad you enjoyed it
Bigfoot scat! (disguised as deer/elk scat) 👣
I was fortunate enough to actually find one of those washed out railroad spikes! I play in Porter all the time if I’m not bushwhacking Cienega or Las Huertas!
Very cool, thanks for watching!
Escape Albuquerque, avoid getting murdered, heat is the least of the problem
Flower power!
Very nice getaway, and I'm jealous of your "living room"! Speaking of dirt roads, I used to be able to handle the "back road" route 165 from Placitas to the Sandia Crest Highway in a Honda Civic in the "good old days", but in recent years it has gotten so bad that I don't even try in a higher-clearance vehicle anymore. Do you know the current conditions of that road?
Last time I went down it was about 1.5 years ago and it was pretty rough. I might have to try again and make a video about it!
Also, one of our employees got her vehicle stuck on the better end (a mile in from the Crest rd.) in March because it was a sheet of ice.
@@smnhc1 That's not good-- I thought it was usually closed in winter. I've been able to get to Palomas Peak TH easily but not sure about Las Huertas picnic area or Sandia Cave and on towards Placitas.
@@smnhc1 Follow-up: I drove it today, and it wasn't so bad. My cervical spine was not amused, but the rest of me had a great time! Las Huertas picnic area is a true gem, but has seen better days.
@@bakarka No, it's left open in winter but as a true travel at your own risk experience with no plowing or maintenance!
