he was partly right. there are no 'aliens' nor is there 'outer space'. there are only fallen angels, trapped with us under the impenetrable dome. outside the dome is water, not 'space'. we live on a plane. the sun, moon and stars are very small and very near.
The fight sequence between Roddy Piper and Keith David is STILL my favourite fight sequence in movie history...especially when you think about WHY they are fighting. LOL
Piper was always my favorite wrestler and a great shit-talker. One of my favorite lines from him during a wrestling interview was: "Just when they think they have all the answers, I change the questions!"
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." Fun Fact: Roddy Piper, being a married man at the time of filming, refused to take his wedding band off. That's why in several scenes you can see a wedding ring. They Bubblegum Fact: The "bubblegum" line was (sorta) ad-libbed by Roddy Piper. According to director John Carpenter, Piper had previously written the line in his notebook of potential verbal bits during his wrestling career. He shared the notebook with Carpenter, and they agreed that this particular line fit the character and the film perfectly. Piper went on to use it at a wrestling match. They Fight Fact: The big fight sequence was designed, rehearsed and choreographed in the back-yard of director John Carpenter's production office. The fight between Nada (Roddy Piper) and Frank (Keith David) was only supposed to last twenty seconds, but Piper and David decided to fight it out for real, only faking the hits to the face and groin. They rehearsed the fight for three weeks. Carpenter was so impressed he kept the scene intact, which runs five minutes, twenty seconds.
Actually the fight goes for 7 and half minutes. It was actually supposed to be 5 minutes longer but they trimmed it down. Carpenter wanted the longest fight scene in cinema history. It took 3 days to film. Piper did get hurt because he did most of the stunts. When he fell out the window he jammed his neck.
Roddy Piper is also in Hell comes to Frogtown. It's a strange but entertaining film. For more Carpenter films you can't go wrong with the apocalypse trilogy, an unofficial trilogy consisting of The Thing, Prince of darkness and In the mouth of madness. Also Big trouble in little China is another one of Carpenters best.
I was going to mention the apocalypse trilogy. You beat me to it. They should definitely watch them. Carpenter was on his game from late seventies to early nineties.
Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper said that Vince McMahon didn't want him to do the film and that Vince would get him a film later on. Roddy decided working for John Carpenter was a once-in-a-life-time thing so he agreed to do the film and I think Vince McMahon kicked him out of the WWF at this time.
He didn't get kicked out actually. Roddy had decided to retire from wrestling to do films and come back to wrestling later. Vince wasn't happy but Roddy didn't burn the bridge down and was able to return after a couple of years.
Best non-'movie' fight scene of all time. Just like a real street fight in that they go for bites, kick in the nuts, hit with whatever is near, totally realistic and goes on forever. Awesome stuff.
_What's the matter baby?_ The sun glasses and the line about bubble gum, was later used in the video game series, Duke Nukem. Where you're battling aliens and have sarcastic one liners. The film though is about greed, and how people can be so easily swayed, even against their own self interests if money and power is involved. The one homeless guy that was at the camp and then later wearing a tuxedo, pretty much explains it all. "People sell out every day, might as well be on the winning team." Roddy Piper is a fellow Canadian. A few times in the film you can hear the pronunciation of certain words. He was known as a very kind and generous guy, he was pretty intimidating due to his size but it's not at all who he was. Just a really good guy and he really cared for his family too.
I saw this in the movies when it was 1st released in 1988 & watched it the Big Screen again last month fircits 35th Anniversary. I used to watch Rowdy Roddy Piper wrestle, which is why I saw this movie. I liked it a lot, like the premise, feels like this could be happening today with the subliminal messaging.
I first saw her in an episode of The Cosby Show. Her and Claire were friends and were having a meeting in Claire's office about a legal case, I think. Mind you, Claire Huxtable was a remarkably classy, stylish and stunning woman. Meg's character definitely matched all of that energy and I thought to myself, "Who the hell is this lady? Her eyes are so captivating."
The fight scene in this is legendary. Since you're into video games, if you haven't played it check out Saints Row IV. It's utterly ridiculously over the top, and loads of fun. Keith David plays himself as the vice president of the United States, and there's a whole sequence where Roddy Piper (voicing himself) shows up as an allied NPC in a scene that is a direct reference to this movie.
John Carpenter composed the music for most of his films, including Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, The Fog, and Ghosts of Mars. I don't know who the first wrestler to cross over into acting was, but Hulk Hogan had a small role in Rocky 3, six years before this film came out.
Piper's been in quite a few movies, but aside from this one, the one that sticks out in my mind is OTHER one that came out the same year called "Hell Comes to Frogtown".
Apart from being one of my favourite John Carpenter movies, one of the things I love about it is the fact that a lot of the macho lines were used in the early Duke Nukem games in the 90s. Especially Duke Nukem 3D when it was on the DOS operating system. I built my 1st computer in 1980 and love these classics
I hope you played “Duke Nuk’em”, (I’m here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And I’m all out of gum”. I also hope you saw the South Park episode “Cripple Fight” which reproduces the brutal fight scene frame by frame, except with animated cripples.
This is one of my favorite films! Roddy Piper was a great Pro-Wrestler and among the first to transition to acting. Other John Carpenter films to watch would be Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China and the original Halloween. If you want to see more of Meg Foster, she was in the Masters of the Universe film.
The PK Meter and that one big laser prop from The Last Starfighter shows up in a ton of movies. If I remember correctly the PK Meter is some sort of shoe buffer thing lol.
Aww thank you! And shoot, I'm so sorry we cut your favorite part! We're planning on starting a Patreon pretty quick, so you'll be able to see the full version there!
3:29 Before the digital age, which included the internet, the majority of jobs available for Men were manual labour and skilled trades and if you didn't have the tools to match your skills then your chances of finding work were slim at best. Jobs at grocery stores, fast food chains, retail stores, etc, were often occupied by students and young people. In addition, employers wanted youthful employees because they were considered easier to train and impressionable when compared to adults.
John Carpenter is pretty talented. In October you should watch his "Halloweeen" (1978). For such a low budget movie it redefined the slasher genre and he also did the (now iconic) music for that too. I'm personally not big on slasher films but it's a timeless classic. Again a good October movie. Thanks for making this and I look forward to more of your reactions!
Keith David is a superb actor, and you're right: he has a great voice. He's memorable in John Carpenter's The Thing too. They Live is a movie born from Carpenter's DEEP disdain of authority (and Conservatism), which is something I appreciate. I always thought that They Live would make a great TV series, following on from the end of the film (still do). Someone should make it!
If you want another Roddy Piper movie - "Hell Comes To Frog Town" (1988) is a fantastic cult movie! Piper's one of a kind charisma gets to shine in it. It's an odd and fun film that I think you two would enjoy. 😊
The alley fight was soo long because it represents the process of waking someone up. Also the number on the dumpster truck (295) is significant The numerology energy represented by the number 295 resonates with the idea of wisdom, intuition, and curiosity. It is a diplomatic energy, tending to fade into the background until action is warranted. When a person lives with number 295 energy, they are likely to be focused on learning about themself. I'm heartened that you found the homeless camp eviction to be disturbing. It pretty much goes as depicted, even without alien overlords. The bulldozers without warning is always upsetting, and the do it that way precisely so activists can't plan to get in their way and put a stop to it.
Lots of people watch this film and praise the concept, and the big FIGHT, but one of the more subtle performances is that of Meg Foster. Sure, her eyes (like those of Karen Black) are always noted (and are really highlighted in the film He-Man where she plays Evil Lyn) but she is a much better actress. The little movements of her eyes and body both conceal and reveal her character's character. She is almost as good as the late Great Bette Davis (see Of Human Bondage), and is by far the best performer in this show.
Hello from Ontario Canada as someone who saw this movie when it first came out this is one of my favorite Sci Fi movies in fact it is not so much a Sci Fi movie as it is a documentary I have researched studied and investigated the Paranormal Supernatural Ufology and conspiracies for over 30 years John Carpenter got the idea for this movie from a short story by Ray Nelson called Eight O ' Clock in the morning from the 1963 November issue in the Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine involving a protagonist named George Nada and an alien invasion in the tradition of invasion of the body snatchers .
It's often quoted that this movie isn't a work of fiction, but reality, and that the MIComplex has been in agreements with ET's since the 1950's that have been systematically using this planet as a source of slavery and Adrenochrome. I would recommend checking out a couple more Carpenter movies such as, "Prince of Darkness" and "The Thing", if you haven't seen them.
PS. Roddy Piper did do a few other films: Hell Comes to Frogtown is a weird one, but is worth a watch (it came out the same year as They Live). He also made another film called Sin-Jin Smyth, but it was unfortunately shelved before it was finished. There's a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/tVqNpWAHioM/v-deo.html
Holly was always a collaborator with the enemy. Apart from the fact that she lived a luxurious lifestyle (based on her car and her home, whereby the movie draws a distinction between rich and poor), the fact that she had no problem committing cold-blooded murder of a fellow human being without any remorse whatsoever, is proof positive that she was always a traitor.
Hi guys, new subscriber here. Glad you liked the film. John Carpenter is one of the best. Check out "Escape From New York" with Kurt Russell. It's an action packed futuristic thriller with Kurt at his coolest best !
This movie is awesome and much about the movie has truth to the world we live in and the powerful that exist today. The aliens from this movie still control America. This movie is basically John Carpenter’s version of The Matrix.
That fight scene between Roddy and Keith David is exactly what it's like on social media for those of us that can see trying to educate the mainstream media woketards on what is actually going on in the world.
Great reaction even though you may call it a sci fi movie just think of this way the movie takes place after the Rapture and you see people that were left behind and that were not saved which then the reason you saw what looked like walking zombies were actually sinful people that were waiting for the judgement day after 7 years. This is the reason that the law enforcement went after the people in the safe houses for the ones that did ask the LORD and repented after the Rapture and those special glasses were to reveal the truth of what the world is like once you got saved just my thought's cause you saw from few years back with the violence in the streets either by law enforcement or by the bad people protesting over whatever they disagree about back then.
This is the movie that glorifies all the free thinkers, the so-called conspiracy theorists. Roddy Piper himself said that this movie is a documentary! There are toothpicks with flavors, like mint or cinnamon. You check on them and the flavor comes out.
You guys make a mistake a lot of reactors do - your comment voices are at least double the volume of the film - If I want to hear the film, your comments, laughs etc.,, are so loud that I have to turn the volume down, and then I can't hear the film... Please make appropriate adjustments.
After she threw a guy through her window don't you think the Police would have been questioning her for a while? To turn up to that meeting was obviously to finger the targets. The fight scene went on too long, an obvious nob to two wrestlers wanting to play it up a bit.
Um… I remember this move- did this movie have people walking on a street?… like they were wearing shirts and pants and some people wore skirts? Is that a thing? Wasn’t this movie where people had hair? Except the people who didn’t have hair.. is that a thing? We’re all the human characters breathing in oxygen and exhaling carbon monoxide? Is that a thing? Were people like walking around on their feet- like instead of walking on their hands? Is that a thing?😂 is that a thing?
Roddy Piper once said about They Live, "it's the best documentary ever made".
he was partly right. there are no 'aliens' nor is there 'outer space'. there are only fallen angels, trapped with us under the impenetrable dome. outside the dome is water, not 'space'. we live on a plane. the sun, moon and stars are very small and very near.
The 5 minute ally fight is a metaphor for how difficult it is to awaken the masses to an uncomfortable truth.
wait until you find out the surface of the earth is a plane, covered by an impenetrable dome
@@dumbcat LOL. Thanks for the laugh.
Keith David almost got black pilled but he came around at te last minute 👍
Holly had a very fancy house and a nice car, that's how the movie hints at her allegiance right away.
Oh yeah! I totally didn't catch that! Good call
Yep, and even her neighbor keeping an eye out on her was indicator for me as well. The phone call she made afterwards just cinched it up.
Carpenter always did his own scores.
Except The Thing
@@RealBLAlley Didn’t know that! It’s in his style though…

Regarding who went from the ring into movies first, I believe both Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant beat Roddy to the punch as it were.
Hey Chandra..do you have tools??

He is going to get in trouble.
Little do THEY KNOW.
You need to watch John Carpenters Prince of Darkness from 1987.
Hi guys, new subscriber here. Glad you liked the film. John Carpenter is one of the best. Check out "Escape From New York" with Kurt Russell. It's an action packed futuristic thriller with Kurt at his coolest best !
Watch ‘The last Mimzy’
Top 5 John Carpenter
This movie is awesome and much about the movie has truth to the world we live in and the powerful that exist today. The aliens from this movie still control America. This movie is basically John Carpenter’s version of The Matrix.
That fight scene between Roddy and Keith David is exactly what it's like on social media for those of us that can see trying to educate the mainstream media woketards on what is actually going on in the world.
almost as bad as trying to educate a far right theocrat..............🤣
watch The Thing with kieth
I don’t you were allowed to make a 80’s movie without a boob shot lol
Roddy’s black costar is Kieth David, voice of Goliath from Gargoyles
After she threw a guy through her window don't you think the Police would have been questioning her for a while? To turn up to that meeting was obviously to finger the targets.
The fight scene went on too long, an obvious nob to two wrestlers wanting to play it up a bit.
the screen is too small.
