Such a classic. I love how these practical effects still hold up.
Interesting lore tidbit-it didn’t make it into movie itself but all the children targeted in this movie had older siblings that Freddy killed before the parents killed them.

Yes! I was so blown away by how creative all the practical effects were! Oooh, the siblings detail is really neat. If a prequel is ever made, telling their stories would be interesting!

The best Elm Steret movies are easily this one, Elm Steet 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
New Nightmate was Craven doing the whole 'Meta horror' thing in 1994, at a level far deeper than anyone had done before. The film was underappreciated and didnt do well in its initial run, but Cracen took the Meta ideas to writer Kevin Williamson, and teo years later they released a little film named Scream.

I saw this movie when I was about 9 years old. Messed - me - up. To this day, it holds up beautifully in terms of just being genuinely scary. The music is so great. Love this movie.

The next best in series is definitely 3. The second one takes a lot of crap due to just not really working with what made Freddy unique, but it's campy and fun if you adjust your expectations. A lot of people sleep on part 4 (unintended pun), but it's actually quite good and even 5 isn't awful. Freddy's Dead (part 6) is interesting, but not great.
New Nightmare is absolutely brilliant writing since they put the OG Wes Craven back in charge.
It's fun watching you guys. One of the few react channels that don't overreact, talk over everything, just be loud, spend the whole movie analyzing, or providing a commentary or synopsis during the runtime, basically being that horrible person you would never want to actuallytake to the movies. Most other movie reaction channels fail so hard at doing at just enjoying and reacting to what's being presented. Thank you for being a refreshing step away from that

    Great reaction, you two!
13:50 The movie we see playing on Nancy's TV is 'Evil Dead', which is one I would also recommend to you both for a future watch. I recommend the entire original trilogy, actually. They're pretty gory, so be aware of that. They also get more comedic each movie. But it still works.

🎶 "One, two, Freddy's coming for you. / Three, four, better lock your door. / Five, six, grab your crucifix. / Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. / Nine, ten, never sleep again." 🎶
Fun Fact: One of the main reasons Johnny Depp was chosen was because Wes Craven's daughter thought he was "dreamy" and that was why this is the feature film debut of Johnny Depp.
Location Location Fact: All of the boiler room footage in the film was shot in the basement of the Lincoln Heights Jail in Los Angeles, which was condemned shortly after production wrapped, due to high levels of asbestos.
Hot Take Fact: The scene where Freddy is set on fire, chases Nancy to the top of the stairs, falls back down, and starts back up again, was all shot in one take, with several cameras, and was the most elaborate fire scene ever filmed up to that time. Stuntman Anthony Cecere won best stunt of the year for the scene.
Blade Enthusiast Fact: The idea behind the glove was a practical one on Wes Craven's part, as he wanted to give the character a unique weapon, but also something that could be made cheaply and wouldn't be difficult to use or transport. At the time he was studying primal fears embedded in the subconscious of people of all cultures, and discovered that one of those fears is attack by animal claws. Around the same time, he saw his cat unsheathe its claws, and the two concepts merged, although in the original script the blades were fishing knives, not steak knives, as in the finished film.

    • @BigGator5
      @BigGator5 Рік тому +4

I would also suggest that you skip the second one. It is wholly inconsistent with not only this movie, but the rest of the franchise as well. I can't stop you from watching it, but I consider it non-canon and I suggest that you do the same. Besides, 3, 4, and 5 (which I lovingly call the Dream Trilogy) outright forgets 2 as well.
Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍

Also, Johnny Depp was only there to accompany a friend who was actually auditioning for the role he eventually got: Jackie Earle Haley. 26 years later, the remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" was released, and for the first time, Freddy Krueger wasn't played by Robert Englund - but Jackie Earle Haley.

What a way to start the month! Wes Craven was such a master of Horror and left behind a great legacy. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Meyers, Leatherface and Pinhead are among some of the best Horror Icons and their early films are the best.
Some trivia: New Line Cinema was saved from bankruptcy by the success of the film, and was jokingly nicknamed "The House that Freddy Built".
The inspiration for the character of Freddy came from several sources in Wes Craven's childhood. Fred Krueger was a schoolmate of his, with whom he had shared a paper route and who had bullied him for several years. Freddy's burns came from a man with severe burn scars by whom Craven had once been terrified as a child, and Freddy's attire (especially the dirty clothes and hat) was inspired by an alcoholic hobo that Craven saw staring at him through his window one day when he was 10 years old.

@@maplenutsreact Craven is definitely considered one of the Masters of Horror. He created Freddy Krueger, but didn't direct most of the sequels. He then created the Scream franchise, which I believe to be the best horror franchise around. I highly recommend watching the Scream franchise, but I recommend watching earlier horror franchises first to create a knowledge foundation. Jason, Leatherface, and the others aren't Craven's, he just started the franchise.

1, 3 and Wes Cravens New Nightmare (7) are the best of the series.. and to me, a trilogy since those are the only ones Wes Craven had any involvment in. 4, 5 and 6 are the "Goofy Trilogy", where Freddy becomes Horror Bugs Bunny and the get increasingly silly. 2 is colsest to 1 in tone and has a lot of latent gay subtext but it breaks the Nightmare rules and its its an odd duck. Freddy Vs Jason is a campy good time (and continues the Bugs Bunny Freddy thing) but it helps if you see a few of Friday the 13ths first.

My goodness you two are a breath of fresh air. You watched that movie like we did in the 80s, full of awe wonder. So many reactors are jaded, to cool for school know-it- alls with a bias towards older films. They constantly talk over the dialogue, stay making obnoxious wisecracks ( everybodys a comedian) and they're always on, its so inauthentic. You can expect cliche comments like, its so campy or its corny, the special effects are good for the 80s, or expect jokes and comments about 80s clothing and hair looking ridiculous (like this generation has room to talk). The editing was also great, you could follow the movie. So many channels have horrible random editing. It was an enjoyment watching the two of you enjoy this movie. You seem like true cinephiles and not fakers, like so many others, who you can tell have no true appreciation of film. My all time favorite horror movie! Watched this so many times with my dad back in the 80’s, so many great memories. I really love how they blur the lines between the nightmare and reality, you never know if you’re awake or asleep. Takes this to another level IMO. Also, Glens death scene, the room was flipped upside down to make the blood come exploding up from the bed. Tina’s death scene, they did the same thing. Room was upside down when she was being drug up the wall. Thanks for reacting to this iconic 80’s horror flick ♥️💚

Fantastic reaction as always. This movie rules, it's genuinely horrifying but with just enough goofy stuff to balance it out. My favorite scene, Nancy falling asleep in class, has both -- you called it out and I totally agree, Tina in the body bag being dragged away by nothing is probably the most potently nightmarish image in the whole movie. But a few seconds later, we get maybe the funniest moment in the whole movie, with Heather Langenkamp's amazing delivery of the line "Screw your pass". Perfect 80s horror, this movie is a blast.
    Recommendations for Spooky Season:
The Evil Dead (1980) -- the start to one of my favorite series of all time. Arguably one of the few 80s horror movies that's grosser AND goofier than Nightmare on Elm St.
Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010) -- One of the most clever scripts ever, acted to perfection by an amazing cast that's completely game for some wild, ridiculous stuff. A horror/comedy that doesn't let down either half of that genre equation. A phrase which could also describe...
Shaun of the Dead (2004) -- Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright gave us the quintessential zomedy. Basically a perfect movie, but one that does benefit from some familiarity with the flicks it's riffing on, so...
Night of the Living Dead (1967) -- the first modern zombie movie and still one of the very best ever made. Invented so many tropes that it will feel familiar because of all the times you've seen stuff that took inspiration from it. The only zombie movie that rivals it in terms of influence is almost certainly...
Return of the Living Dead (1985) -- One of two horror classics (the other being Evil Dead 2) that, in my experience, first-time viewers find to be either completely terrifying, or extremely funny. Originated the idea that zombies groan "braaaiiins", and the soundtrack rules.
Looking forward to your October reactions, there's so much fun to be had in the world of scary movies!

There are 8 movies + a remake. The canon timeline is:
Nightmare on elm street 1-5 -> freddy's dead (aka nightmare 6) -> freddy vs jason (aka nightmare 8 & friday the 13th 11)
New nightmare, aka nightmare 7, is out of continuity, but very good. The remake isn't worth it.

33:03 - lol, you blew her mind. And you're correct. They did film the room upside down for that effect. And the stairs turning to goo was done with oatmeal and (I think) pancake mix. Back when I was a kid, they had a tv show called Movie Magic, where they'd cover all the cool behind the scenes effects that movies used. One of my favorites was the use of colored Q-tips on a miniature in Star Wars Episode 1, during the pod race scene. They blew air across the sticks beneath the set, making the cotton heads move. This tricks the viewers into thinking the moving Q-tips are actually out of focus people moving around in the distant stadium seats. Simple, but effective.

Wes Craven said that the inspiration for this movie was from a real life case.
Apperarntly the police got a call about a teen who who not well. The police came the day of or morning of and found the teen dead. Inside the room, they found coffee, caffeine pills, sugar etc. It looked like he was trying to stay awake for some reason. I am not sure what cause of death they gave that case, but it always stayed with Wes and he always wondered.

The reason for the red-and-green sweater is that Wes Craven had read that red and green are the two most difficult colors for the human eye to see when they're placed side-by-side, so putting Freddy in a red-and-green striped sweater makes him fundamentally uncomfortable to look at.

I know I'm late, but since you asked for recommendations, let's give it a try.
*Classics* (ordered by year of release)
    - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1957)
    - Psycho (1960)
    - The Omen (1976)
    - Rosemary's Baby (1968)
    - Jaws (1975)
    - Dawn of the Dead (1978)
    - The Shining (1980)
Some will resonate with you, others perhaps won't because of their age. Nevertheless, they're all gems in their own way that have had a lot of influence on many other horror movies. Plus, they'll often be referred in other movies or pop culture, which kind of makes many of them a prerequisite for later horror movies.
    *Other trend-setting horror movies*
    - Child's Play (1988)
    - The Blair Witch Project (1999)
    - Paranormal Activity (and the second one; mind the post-credits scene for the second one.)
    - Saw (2004, not as gory as you'd imagine.)
    - The Conjuring (2013)
    - Get Out (2017, though more a psychological thriller.)
    - A Quiet Place (2018)
(You've already watched the other trend-setting titles like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Thing, etc.)
*Horror game adaptions that surprisingly don't suck*
    - Resident Evil (2002)
    - Silent Hill (2006, though more a psychological thriller.)
    - Doom (2005)
    *Foreign horror* (needs subtitles)
    - Ringu (Japanese. Sure, there's a remake called _The Ring_ , but if you want suspenseful horror and camera work rather than just jumpscares you'll need to watch Japanese movies.)
    - [REC] (Spanish horror. And boy, it is good.)
    - Ju-On: The Curse (Japanese, US remake 'The Grudge').
*Horror satire* which is horror/suspense which contains comedy you may not even spot unless you know the references.
    - Scream (requirement: having watched Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street)
    - Cabin in the Woods (requirement: having watched a fair bit of horror movies)
    - Shaun of the Dead (horror/British humor)

As far as Elm Street sequels go- 2, 3 and 4 are fun, BUT- they tend to get sillier with each sequel. Many love 3 as much as the original- it has some fun moments, but overall it's way more cheesy than the original. To each his own tho!

"This is god" is such an unsettling line. Craven was a master of mood, always making you question whether you were in reality or not. As for the sequels, while part 3 (Dream Warriors) is generally considered a classic, somewhere along the way they made Freddy funnier and really doubled down on the one-liners. Wes Craven's New Nightmare was really good and meta, sort of a Scream before Scream even existed.

The grunge look was due to this movie being considered an indie film back when it released, and the studio New Line Cinema was called "The studio Freddy built" because of how well this little indie slasher flick did at the box office.

Saw this in the theater when i was 7. It was an indie film so it had a slow roll out . We didnt get it in Florida til early 85. Begged to see it, insisting it would be like Gremlins (it wasnt).. i tried bolting out of the theater, my dad pulled me back in ("You dragged me out here to this... you watch it""). I think i was one of maybe 2 kids in my 2nd grade class to have seen it.. it was a badge of honor.

Wes Craven got the idea for this film from an article he read in the LA Times, young teenagers particularly Asian teens, were randomly dying in their sleep, he read a particular story about a teenager who refused to sleep, stayed up for days. His dad gave him a sleeping pill and he finally went to sleep... His parents felt a sense of relief because he was finally sleeping. Well in the middle of the night they heard their son screaming at the top of his lungs by the time they got to his room, he was already dead. They found a hidden coffee pot in his room as well.

Nightmare on Elmstreet 3, is definitely the one I'd recommend next, nancy is also in it. 2 is a weird rushed movie that is largely "decanonized" by the fan base, and you'd miss nothing skipping it.
4,5 are okay, "mid" as the kids says. 6 is like really bad. But "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" which is the "7th" movie is also fantastic and works great as a stand alone movie without having to see the others except 1 and maybe 3.

Of any of the sequels you should watch "Wes Cravens New Nightmare". It was Wes Cravens returning in 1994 to reclaim Freddy Krueger since the sequels were getting ridiculous...and it is very meta in terms of filmmaking etc...heather Langenkamp who plays Heather returns, playing herself...the actor who plays Heather...which is kinda cool, its a movie within a movie type deal.. 2 years later Wes Cravens would release Scream in 1996 which kinda saved the horror genre...but would never have happened without "New Nightmare"

Loved your reaction! This is my fav horror movie and one of my fav franchises. If youre interested in the series they do get pretty campy and comical and various degrees of "bad sequel" but at the same time all bring something new and special, especially in the practical effects and surreal dream sequences. Imo & commonly regarded as the best are 1, 3, and 7. 7 in particular is fantastically meta and is easily one of the most inventive and interesting sequel/reboot ideas in film history even before "reboot etc" was a thing. Those 3 are much watch if you want the core Elm Street Nightmare experience. But i def recommend them all too if youre just looking for a ridiculous fun time! 😆
Edit: just want to add that 7 "New Nightmare" also works as a stand alone film but I highly highly recommend having the first film fresh in your mind in order to truly appreciate it because there are MANY references to it and that's part of what makes that film so fun and interesting to experience, being able to catch all the throw backs.

Wes Craven is a horror genius. The second one isn’t so good cause they didn’t bring Robert Englund back. They thought they could dress anyone up as Freddy not realizing that Robert was Freddy. There’s a four hour movie called “Never Sleep Again” that is a behind the scenes type. A good one to watch is called “A New Nightmare” it’s a creative storytelling. There is a remake done in 2010 with Jackie Earle Haley playing Freddy. The storyline is good but it’s hard seeing someone who isn’t Robert Englund playing Freddy.

If you ever do a series netflix's Haunting of Hill House is a must.
