The band was formed in 1995 by Tim Kasher, Matt Maginn, Steve Pedersen (all formerly of Slowdown Virginia), and drummer Clint Schnase. In 1997, they released Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes. After a couple years of touring, the band broke up in 1998. They "posthumously" released The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song in the fall of that year. A year later, in the summer of 1999, the band re-formed. Pedersen had started law school and later formed The White Octave, so Ted Stevens (formerly of Lullaby for the Working Class) stepped in and joined the band. In 2000, their album Domestica, a concept album, gained them much attention from fans and critics.
Cursive added Gretta Cohn (on cello) in 2001; the strings added complementary sounds to that summer's Burst and Bloom. In 2002, the band toured on the Take Action! Tour.
Saddle Creek Records released The Ugly Organ in 2003. Music magazine Rolling Stone gave the album a 4-star rating, while alternative music magazine Alternative Press rated the album a perfect 5 out of 5. In 2004, The Cure selected Cursive to tour with them on their Curiosa tour, alongside Interpol, The Rapture, Mogwai, Scarling., and The Cooper Temple Clause. Afterwards, the band went on hiatus, with no specified return date.
The label put out a compilation album of unreleased songs and B-sides, The Difference Between Houses and Homes, on August 9, 2005. In mid-2005, Gretta left the band to pursue other musical opportunities, and has since formed the Brooklyn, NY-based band Twin Thousands. Instead of replacing her, the band remained four-piece.
This version actually fucking rips. If he is actually drunk he’s still hitting the notes he needs to. Plus the pace and overall mood really fits the “drunk and swaying” vibe. I really dig this
This so much!
I don’t think he’s drunk, he sounds great and he’s acting a little weird, but it all seems very intentional
This is going to sound weird but part of what makes this performance so unbelievably good is his gesticulations and body language. It sounds terrific but the emotionality in the way that he moves his head and hands really adds something that is lost in pure audio.
i love this drunk aggressive and free spirited version. as a musician this looked like a fun night to play some old ones.
He's drunk and beautiful.
I’m drunk
i’m also drunk
The “I’ve come” in the line (to wrap you up tight...) gets me every time
Holy. As if I didn’t think this song could get any better.
Hands down best band I've ever seen live
Woah! I’m seeing them Saturday!
I love that the keyboard player has a beer chilling on the corner of a $2,000 keyboard.
I personally dont give a shit how drunk Tim is. This is my favorite version of this song. I think him being drunk AF actually adds to the effect of the song. A lot of Cursive's music, I feel, is more powerful when listened to from this mindset. its an instinctual rant. It's so Fucking Beautiful
Fuck yes. I miss seeing these guys. To this day one of my favorite bands. He's his own worst enemy and I love it because I can relate.
100% agree. Who wants to hear a song played exactly how it was recorded/the same exact way every time when seeing live shows anyway?
This is my go-to version of this song. This approach fits the lyrics better. It just hits harder. I've seen Cursive dozens of times and an inebriated Tim isn't necessarily a bad thing, in terms of performance.
One of my favorite live performances ever captured
Love the punch/tempo of the original, but this version has a nice vibe to it. Tim being mad drunk, "playing" his guitar backwards makes it that much better.
Play it at 1.5 speed. It’s pretty close.
I got into these guys over a decade ago in high school...now they all look like high school teachers themselves XD
Jules Tindungan lol, they were old enough to be high school teachers when you got into them.
Seriously guys? This version is AMAZING.
Man Tim is so awesome. He and my uncle are friends and he's really cool to hang out with. I wish I had the courage to ask him about his lyrics.
As long as you remember that he's a person that's more than just his music, and you're respectful, I'll bet he'd talk to you about his stuff
what are you afraid of? He is a person. He would probably love to chop it up about his passion.
Great slowed version. If you want the original, just put it up to 1.25 speed
hahah that’s dope
So much passion in this performance
Good lord. This band sounds so tight live. 👍👍👍
Still my favorite song nearly 2 decades later
i always get in to bands quite late... i reckon nows a good time to get in to this band :D
the good life
their first few albums are so good. i’ve been heavily into them since about 2002 and have considered them one of my top favorite bands since
been into them since 8th grade, 2017, and here I am still coming back to their performances
Actually digging this slowed down tempo. Really works much better for the song than the studio version.
That little end part man, just sailing into melancholy heaven. Beautiful man.
2:09 I love the keyboard in the second verse!!
so fucking awesome
Cursive live is the best experience of my life
impresionante, pero sobrio no lo hubiera hecho mejor! sentimiento de melancolia y fuerza!
holy wow! this rips. hope they play this song tonight half as good as this
This live version so many feels!! Cursive is great even fucking around the song....
This has a heaviness which the original lacks a bit. Interesting to find out about this band this year when apparently theyve been a thing for decades? Guess Ive been missing out
Love this so much.
Damn, this is amazing
Amazing
Tim loves that awesome green shirt haha. I saw these guys live in SLC earlier this month and it was incredible!!
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss
Let’s do this thing already
Fkn awesome
Those go hand in hand. Lets go with Beautiful
I actually think it gives this performance a unique sound.
Word!
I PRETEND I PRETEND I PRETEND
fucking amazing
O my God. Ive stumbled across liquid gold.
Was at this show. Was shocked they played basically all of ugly organ all the way through. So sick
My ego's like my stomach it keeps shitting what i feed it
music so impact, awesome band that the world may never know now!
3:38 gaaaaah! Moody and I’m all about it
🤘💯
That's an amazing Performance!
That was a good show at the Glass House
always obsessed with this song
Sick rendition!
They were playing with Minus the Bear a this show :D I was right by the stage for this
That's not even the worst part, he's playing the guitar backwards!
Watch it at 1.25x
One does not simply listen to this one time only
The drunker Tim Kasher is, the better he performs. This has always been a fact in Cursive history. Except that time he started rambling.
eu fiz isso semana passada...muita cachaça e pouca farinha... até bati o carro! tamo véio, não pode esquecer o antídoto qnd fica chapado!
Edit: Muito boa apresentação!
Love this version. And honestly sure a lot of Tim's music has to do with alcoholism and being a fuck up but I also wonder if it's now kind of a part of an intentional act. I'm fine w that, but people act like "oh he's wasted" but really his guitar playing was fine and the vocals matched the story so - what's the problem? If Tim was drunk then TED was drunk too unless he was just shuffling his guitar part around a lot which one could expect from him artistically. Anyway Cursive rulz dewd
playing the guitar is actually easier when you're drunk as an alcoholic because your hands aren't shaky
best regards, drunkard guitarist
it was a god show just hit to the soul.
Play this back in 1.25x and thank me later.
Hell yea, my first time seeing a Cursive performance live and Tim is drunk asf!
Cheers!
I saw Cursive play last night and it was weird to see Tim have 1 drink and not be wasted
this is *DEVASTATING*
Anyone that has gone thru thru the ringer like he did, gets a free pass.
1:22
Looks like a young Isaac Brock in this
Anyone know why is sounds like they play this in half time for live performances?
I notice that too.
I think it's just because it fits the songs emotion more.
musicians will usually record songs before they're completely realized then later down the road they change things as the song evolves.
I prefer the slower version. I wish they'd record it again.
but to each his own!
not really dude. usually they've been playing the stuff for quite a while before recording. nobody wants to pour in all the money, time and effort required to record an album without the songs being 'fully realised'.
i guess they just decided later on that it sounds better this way
It's not so much a song being fully realized as it is a band growing after the song. I totally agree that no band will waste their time and money recording a song they know isn't up to it's potential. But I feel like in Cursive's case with this song is that, considering it's almost ten years old at the time of this recording, the song has grown with the musicians and has grown into something much more than their original idea of it.
Playing the same song for years and years you learn and adapt it with your own personal growth and it usually turns into much more than originally anticipated.
Lotta records are written in the studio. Especially with bigger bands that have big budgets for studio time.
When the nerdy bowling and marching band kids get together in highschool and start a fire band.😆😆🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tiras una birra ahí y no toca el piso
me llevo un buen rato riendo por tu culpa xD
no fam
My ex-wife hated this song...so she's my ex-wife now
This was great but isn't that guitar picking straight out of a song from Shrek?
No, the guitar picking in the song from Shrek was straight out of this.
METH
butchered, I would have walked out of this show
Ok great see ya! Clearly you don't know Cursive
And they would have gladly taken your money to walk out.
Well BYE.
this is terrible.
nah its pretty emotional but you tried
haha i did..
That’s just like your opinion man
You’re fun!
it is, vocals were the best part of the song and he just shit all over the stage, yuck
God this version is terrible
Amazing
