It started with the offseason. In a vacuum, letting go of Goodrow and trying to trade Trouba were good ideas. But Drury went about it the wrong way. It ended up angering the players and his memo to the league made it worse.

Self sabotage by Drury. He sent that memo out to the rest of the NHL the day after the Edmonton loss, and everybody else knew about in about 24 hours. That loss against the Oilers was their first back-to-back loss of the season, and the GM was putting up a For Sale sign. Not surprised things spiraled after that.

The Rangers never did a true rebuild. Signing Trouba and Panarin the year after they sent out “The Letter” made sure of that. The Buchnevich trade was at the time, and still remains, a total disaster. They still haven’t replaced him all these years later. Reilly Smith? lol. This team was never properly built to win a cup. Their defense in front of Igor is atrocious. They are soft, physically and mentally, and without leadership. Blow it up Dolan, if you even care.

Every champ I can remember has THE GUY, or hell, a few of them. Rags literally have none, Panarin, Zib, Fox, these guys need to lead yet it looks like they just want to follow.

This team had Igor bail them out so much during 21-22 that they forgot they needed to play defense at all. They never played defense once under Gallant. Then this team gave Lavi 10 games at the start of last season where they played defense and then decided they were too good to play defense anymore. This is a team that just at it's core is lazy and careless and only wants to hunt for fancy cross ice passing plays while being bailed out by HOF goaltending.

Team chemistry is so important. Seattle blowing up the Rangers and Seattle getting blown up the same way by the Sharks the week before, the difference was chemistry and morale. I don't blame Lavs for this. He's a good coach and was in Washington. He just seems to be repeatedly brought in with a "win now" situation, where the team is already been built as a veteran top 6 team and only needs to worry about winning games and the cup. Drury hasn't done him any favors by messing with the team chemistry and leadership despite not really needing to. Even now, the Rangers are in a #8 playoff spot in the east and nobody is really threatening them - Boston, Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, all seem to be going nowhere. A 3-4 game win streak and everyone forgets this happened. Trying to make these changes has messed up the locker room and Lavs is not the kind of coach to be able to fix that kind of problem. He was brought in to win games and not repair team chemistry. It's probably going to be up to the players to get things together. Hopefully they can do so before they lose too many standings points.

This team has a habit of hiring a new coach, having success for the first season or two, and then quitting on the coach. Vignault, Gallant, and now Laviolette (not counting Quinn during the rebuild). All three of those coaches made it to the conference or SC finals, and the team quit on all 3 shortly thereafter. This current team had/has their veterans playing poorly (Trouba, Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox, Miller, Lindgren, Smith etc), while the youngsters are blossoming (Cuylle, Lafreniere, Schneider, Jones, Kakko, Chytil etc). You only win when you have both veterans and youngsters playing well at the same time. I'm sure they'll "reward" this team by firing Laviolette and giving them a new coach to quit on.

That lasted from around 1965-75 so I always think all Met fans are old boomers. The Islanders were never the team in NY, even when they were winning Stanley Cups. They always just had a cult following, even on Long Island.

Zibanejad's decline is the biggest reason for this stretch. His 5v5 production went first, and now his PP production has also plummeted, leaving him with little offensive upside. Under Laviolette he became more of a "shutdown" center and was fairly successful in that aspect of his game last season. Now this season even his defense is completely shot. He makes terrible turnovers he didn't make in the past, he looks slow tracking back through the neutral zone, and in general he just looks lost out there. There are obviously more problems than just ZBJ with this team but he's our 1C, he needs to play better or there is no hope for this team. And as far as moving him, he has a full NMC until 2030 so you can't even threaten to waive him like they did to Trouba. So he just needs to figure it out

Lindgren hasn't been great either, leaving Fox, Jones, and Schneider as the only capable defensemen (Mancini can be included in this as well). Players know that if they underperform that they can be traded, but Drury basically moved Goodrow to San Jose via waivers since they were the only ones who wanted him but he had them on his no trade list. Basically threatened Trouba with the same.

Suprised you dont have Miller on the board who has consistently been the worst defenseman on the team all season long.
And yes, Cuylle is far and away our best player this season with an honorable mention to Chytil.
Kakko has been playing pretty well to be fair.
As far as goaltending goes, they can only do so much when the opponents have free access to the slot all game long as much as they want. Even defending the rush, they still manage to make it harder for the goaltender by not taking away the pass or the shot, just something in between, confusing the netminder.
I will agree with the team is not built to win, it was built not to lose. And now they can't even manage that.
The most scary thing is that they have had an incredibly soft schedule so far.. so, by this pace they'll go from 2 wins away from the SCF to a bottom 5 team in the league in 1 year. That in itself is sort of impressive.

As a Devils fan, can't say I'm too upset about this. As a hockey fan, I think that some of these more "ruthless" decisions started with Vegas and the moves its made jettisoning players for nothing since their inception. At first, didn't catch on and then they won a cup, so some other teams likely took notice. Tampa played hardball with Stamkos, and that appears to have worked for them, then Drury with Goodrow in the Summer as mentioned in the video followed by Trouba as well. It's interesting to watch and I'm curious if this shift away from that mindset of having "loyalty" to the players vs loyalty to the team's long-term success will continue and other teams will follow suit. That being said, making all of these public statements and announcements doesn't really serve a practical purpose. It's obviously not helping the players/team focus on the game and if you're looking for a move, other teams know that and can try to leverage it as well. I don't think the Rangers roster is that poorly constructed and I do think this 10 game sample is an overexaggeration and will likely lead to overcorrection. I don't think that this will have as much of an impact on signing FA's though (even though I hope it does). It's still an original six team in the biggest metropolitan area in the country.

Drury is losing my confidence quickly. Goodrow and Trouba's contracts were bad, but it would be hard to script a worse handling of trying to get away from those bad contracts in terms of team cohesion and chemistry. Now he's got cap space from dealing Trouba, and what's he going to do with it? Besides enrage the Sens I guess? He needs to do something with this cap space or it's all for nothing. And the random guys he keeps bringing in shows me again and again that he has no idea what the team needs or who will fit.
And then the Igor deal...yeah, goaltending is absolutely not the problem right now, or really ever. And yeah, someone was going to give Igor that contract. But 20 years into the Rangers being a club with elite goaltending and then a pocket full of hope that all the other shortcomings of the team will just go away, everyone that doesn't have a Penn Plaza office has figured out that goaltending can stop you from losing but it can't make you win. So for me, banking that hard on Igor underscores how far the Rangers are from being a consistently good team rather than a team that goes on hot streaks and then falls off a cliff for weeks at a time. Great, we've locked down an A+ goalie for 8 years with a huge cap hit, signaling a lack of seriousness from Drury about improving the team overall. I would have at least entertained the thought of downgrading from Igor if it meant finally getting serious about building consistency.

The last 10 games of the Rangers are exactly what is being said here, no heart, playing virtually no defense, and Laviolette needs to (but isn't) breaking the Rangers down to the basics - players will respond when ice time is the reward - your lesser players get more ice time for effort and hustling - the star players will soon pay attention to being "bench butts" and not on the ice.
