I live in Richmond VA and John McNeill Factory Hutch racer and Justin Shepard Factory CW raced at our BMX Track.. Bmx Bike and Track ... I was in total shock the 1st time seeing their bikes and Uniforms...What a memory.....
AHH Hutch. Well known for their beautiful chrome finish ,super light weight, strong frames and exotic components, and best of all USA made. In their heyday they WERE the BMX to have or lust for. Anyone in the know lusted after a Pro-Racer, Pro-Star or maybe even a Trick-Star if free-styling.
Had 2 trick stars the blue and the red damn how i wish i still had them who would know the money they are worth right now also haro sport and master and lastly gt pro performer 2 of course not in that order or at the same time lol
TexasTimelapse I think I have permanent grooves in my shin bones… Used to get KKT pedals circa 1979 and take a file to them to make them look like what could only be described as a sharks mouth! Ruined many a 501 Pant leg and donated a lot of blood to the earth back in those days! Back when kids were real kids and Gorrie injuries were just part of having fun.
I have a scar from a double layer of stitches I needed to sew me back together. I landed on the right pedal but missed the left. My Mom almost passed out when I showed her. Good times.
I'm 53 years old I owned a 1976 Redline MX 2 every time I see one of these videos I kick myself for trading it away bike is now worth several thousand dollars
Im 46. I still have my Robinson 20". I built the bike up from scratch in 82. It has Hutch bear trap pedals. Those pedals are probably illegal now a days. I still ride it.
I, too, was a Hutch Pro Racer guy. It was totally tricked. Hutch bars and neck but pedals and cranks were pricey. Redline flights and Suntour Bear Claws were on mine. Graphite Skyway mags with Comp III tires finished it up. Loved that bike. Cant believe what they go for now. Big bucks. Oh, and a Zeronine plate and Oakley B1B grips.
Enjoyed your video...made me remember my Race Inc. frame, TRX Forks, Cook Brothers hubs,ACS Z-Rims, snake belly tires, Haro frt # plate, 2- Finger brake levers, Ouri grips, GT stem and H.bars . Front rim red with blue hub, rear rim blue with red hub, blue frame and seat with lots gold anodized parts. Wish I still had it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane ❤
Great video… I’m 54 and started racing in 1977. Im from the central valley of California and I started racing on a redline square back with all Ashtabula (can’t remember if that’s the right spelling… I’m old) parts. That Puppy weighed in at a little over 40 lbs! Had a friend that had a Yamaha Moto bike with Moto mags and it weighed over 60 pounds!!! When you were jumping spikes and land hard it felt like you were going to move the earth! My first real racing bike was a cooks brothers and it weighed in the mid-20s and all chrome Molly with an aluminum crankset out of a 10 speed. Stopped racing in 82 and have missed it ever since. Last year went out and bought a red line 24 inch cruiser and I’m slowly getting back into it. I have a friend from back in the day that I recently saw for the first time in years and he’s trying to get me to buy a downhill bike and go to the ski resorts during summer and ride. Sounds like a Tonna fun but those bikes are damn expensive! Might have to pry open my wallet and get one. Anyway glad to see your kid is racing BMX it’s an awesome sport and makes for great childhood memories.
Thanks Clint. I haven't ridden a BMX since the early 90s so it was nice to see how they have changed in that time. Me and my friends used to do 30 mile rides regularly, so we were glad for the longer seat tubes and posts. lol
That is a nice hutch.. probably worth three times what the new bike is. It’s amazing what collectors pay for these now. I raced in the late 70s and early 80s I have an old redline squareback and one of the original torqer bikes with graphite tuff wheels...Love my old bikes
I'm another old-schooler (soon to be 49 yrs old)...had a Haro Master and a Redline Prostyler RL-20 BITD. Just recently acquired a '94 Haro Group 1 and have been tinkering with it. I appreciate how BMX has evolved and the new bikes are great...but I will choose the 80s bikes all day long.
Hutch was my second favorite. I raced a skyway, redline cranks, hutch bear traps, bullseye hubs, 1 3/8” araya rims, Comp 3 tires, UNI seat, tuff neck pro neck stem, cheesy headset (I don’t think there were Chris king headsets back then), VDC monkey bars, Oakley grips, zero9 factory plate
Hey Clint, stay safe during Irma if it does hit, I'm in Tallahassee myself. my prayers go out to your family and others that are affected by the storm.
Those quill stems still give me the sh*ts. Had one come out on me off a drop-off at a race meeting back in the day. The angled nut was made of some nasty cast metal and it split in two, resulting in the bars coming out in my hands as I pulled up. Fun times. Cheers for the video.
I miss my JMC but I don't miss my bear trap pedals and two layers of stitches I needed when the pedal hit me just below the knee cap. Thanks for the video.
Clint I ride mountains here in Arizona but I also have a bmx bike for dirt jumps/street that i just got into around October last year after watching Scotty Cranmer bmx videos. Good job on the upload to see the differences between new and old school bikes.
I commend you for keeping up with that bike over the years and keeping it looking nice. I would give anything to have my 1990 Haro Master back again. I gave it to my cousin in the late 90s and it got stolen out of his yard.
Great vid!! My apologies if this is mentioned further down in the comments..Old School bmx rider (1st Gen Mongoose/Skyway TA) The Redline 401 Flights were splined cranks. I dropped the money on those after going through multiple 3 piece cranks with the square taper. They just seemed to round out quickly
.When my kids were BMXing, all of the parents wanted me to race to? So there I was, in my late 30's, racing a vintage Dyno GT. I won a few races, but mostly was at the back making sure the race went well?
I believe those are called caliper brakes on the old BMX bikes. They never used cantilevers, those were popular on Mt. bikes years ago. They had the cable between the two arms and a hook that came from the brake lever that squeezed the arms together. Not sure how much they're used now.
I cut my teeth on a metallic blue Mongoose Motomag 2 racing BMX back in the day and that Hutch brings back a lot of fond memories. Great bike then and still usable now. Maybe not competitive but technology has come so far this is a great video and I'm glad you posted it. Thanks!
Perfect mate! Just like ur self im an old skool bmx'er and now find my son needs a bmx to get into racing and I have NO idea what to look for! Well until I found this video! Now need to find out about diff brands and bikes out there. E.g. DK vs Element vs etc etc.. Cheers.
the stem neck in the 80s sat perfectly for riding.the new bikes handle bars sit way to low.pretty much no stem.they just sit on top of the frame pretty much
LOL when I showed my kids the bikes we rode in the 80’s, their response was “Those look stupid. Why couldn’t people tell back then that those look stupid?” FWIW I rode a General RL Osborne bike.
Nice Hutch! I had one and broke the frame. They honored the lifetime warranty too. I wish I had kept it. I love to watch your videos. I just bought the 2019 Giant Fathom 1 bc of your videos.
Chain tensioners did exist in the 80's. They didn't exist as a product as far as I know until the 90's. I wanted my chain to be the perfect tention (not too sloppy, and not tight which created drag/friction) so I figured I'd create something to keep the bolt from sliding forward. I ended up going to the hardware store and got some flat eye bolts and part from an anchor bolt setup. I assume others did the same but in 1985 nobody at the tracks I raced did it. Also clipless or any other pedals where you foot would attach were illegal in teh 80's and 90's to a certain point. I wasn't racing anymore when they made them legal and stopped requiring the bar pads. I have a new 2019 GT speed series and the rear dropout is completely different than other bikes and it has disk brakes. I don't race but do pump tracks for fun. Nice video.
Cool comparison, love the old Hutch my brother still has his from BITD. Interestingly from a riding perspective the modern bikes are not better, just different. The most important thing is to find is a frame size that suits you. I have just started racing again after 35 years off and tried using my modern race bike i've had for several years and it just wasn't any good for me, I switched to my old 1980's bike and right away was faster and jumping further and cleaner, this is after not riding an old school at all literally since the 80's, showing that in my case at least, the super long modern frames are just no good (at least on the old school type tracks here). Standing up pedaling the low top tubes and seat tubes on the modern bikes make no difference at all to rider area and personally I don't like the really low handle bar height. The couple of lbs weight difference is negated with running new school type rims and modern light weight tires. But I absolutely agree about the brakes, while mine stops ok with modern pads on it, the caliper flex is insane haha
There's a big difference with these two bikes This father loves his son. Good father! That Chase element is a very expensive bike. With the comparison. The Hutch I am assuming in the early 80's about a$100 to $150 bike give or take. That Chase Element is like a $1000 bike if I am not mistaken. Nice video. I do like seeing the improvement of todays bikes.
Haha! Kewl video man!! 1982 huh? That's exactly when I was into BMX. Right when E.T: was popular! Dang I sure wish I still had my old Redline bike :(. It got stolen long ago.
Nice video, that was really cool comparison. As a BMX Racer I enjoyed having a look at where we came from. I actually also race a Chase Element but an older model and I consider getting the model you showed in this video. A review of the Element after some usage would be helpful ;)
I like the variety of topics on your channel. Now you need to do a comparison of how Mountain Bikes have changed since the early days of "mountain biking". The 1990's, etc, I have a 1995?? Giant Acapulco "MB". No suspension at all.
Michael Byrne - I'm in the Hutch Pro Racer club too - Clint should get some Hutch Bear Trap pedals and Redline flight cranks - Hurts me to see it looking so unloved.
I miss my Hutch Pro racer like that I hate having to switch to New School stuff to be competitive. But I do trust the new Fork stem setups better than the quill.
Besides all the differences between the two, one of the biggest is the materials. The Hutch is a Chromoly frame and looks like the Element is aluminum. Chromoly flexes a bit and rides way differently than the stiffer aluminum frame. Now that they make the Carbon frames, they don’t flex at all. Really different ride.
BMX used 48 spline 3 piece cranks from the early eighties no one used square taper bottom brackets in the full size classes. Far superior to anything you could find on a MTB up until the Hollow tech cranks came out. The best part about those original profile cranks is that if you owned a set from the eighties and broke them today they would still be warrantied no questions asked. I've seen it first hand. And canti-mounts showed up on BMX bikes in the early to mid '90s. I remember the first time seeing them was on a Balance cruiser. I had, actually still have, a carbon Mongoose SL from 1996 with carbon Nuke proof hubs. In that era aluminum and magnesium forks were starting to show up then in the early 2000's carbon forks were introduced Answer Scythe and Bombshell F1.
I'm a 80s baby all I remember is dyno gt now my son is bmx racing hes been using a loaner & hes doing really good I'm looking at the chase bikes the 2021 hasnt came out yet hea needs a 21.5 inch
In all fairness, the 2 bikes are for different disciplines. The Hutch, given the time period was for both track and street; that’s all we had back then. Nowadays and in the 90’s you have bikes for street and track. Different geometry and materials.
Also the difference in stems was that the quail stem was 1inch and now they are 1 1/8 or 1 1/8 tapered to 1.5 head tube... .the Hutch doesn't have cantilever brakes on it either.
M Whitelaw ahhh..Race Inc. and FMF… Can’t tell you how many of those frames came apart at the fork tube while I was in the air! I loved how light they were but this was before they figured out you had to heat treat the whole frame after you weld it to relieve stress. Had some of my gnarliest crashes on those bikes! Now that I’m older every time the weather changes I remember these crashes fondly and with a little pain 🤣
The Hutch has caliper brakes, not cantilevers. Cantilever pivots are mounted on the frame. Those Hutch bikes are collectibles now, as were the 60s Spyder bike riders when they hit middle age.
One good question is, will that new BMX bike survive the test of time as that Hutch has? those 80's BMX bikes were work horses.. I regret leaving my 83 GT Pro Racer when I moved, have never been able to get another one like it :(
I live in Richmond VA and John McNeill Factory Hutch racer and Justin Shepard Factory CW raced at our BMX Track.. Bmx Bike and Track ... I was in total shock the 1st time seeing their bikes and Uniforms...What a memory.....
Interesting to compare. I got into BMX in 1975 just when it was all evolving. I recently bought a 24 inch red line bmx bike.

Good times.
I am a 80s bmx guy and this video is awesome...I still like the tall seat stem..
Gotta sit down some time better like that than have your knees up around your ears
100%
80s bikes were cool
I'm 53 years old I owned a 1976 Redline MX 2 every time I see one of these videos I kick myself for trading it away bike is now worth several thousand dollars
Im 46. I still have my Robinson 20". I built the bike up from scratch in 82. It has Hutch bear trap pedals. Those pedals are probably illegal now a days. I still ride it.
DYNAMO ME bear trap pedal was the jam back in the days!
I’m 43 and I still have scars on my shin from bear traps!
Those peddles are not illegal now but they are worth a ton of money.
I, too, was a Hutch Pro Racer guy. It was totally tricked. Hutch bars and neck but pedals and cranks were pricey. Redline flights and Suntour Bear Claws were on mine. Love ❤️ the look of retro bmx I personally run a bar pad and a high seat it's just so comfortable
Great video… I’m 54 and started racing in 1977. Ah....you shoulda gone 26", way more versatile if you aren't going to race.....just my opinion, tell me to take a hike, I won't mind.
Thanks Clint. I haven't ridden a BMX since the early 90s so it was nice to see how they have changed in that time. Me and my friends used to do 30 mile rides regularly, so we were glad for the longer seat tubes and posts. lol
I started with a Robinson , ended with a Schwin xs pro , fredzi bars , profile cranks and GT platform pedals. I loved that bike.
Great! I'm 51 and wish I still had my Robinson race bike.
i like both old and new school bikes
That is a nice hutch.. probably worth three times what the new bike is. It’s amazing what collectors pay for these now. I raced in the late 70s and early 80s I have an old redline squareback and one of the original torqer bikes with graphite tuff wheels...Love my old bikes
I enjoy the random bmx content. Rock on!
I used to run chain tensioners on my panda pro-am and gt back in the early to mid 80s
Could you do a video at the bmx track with your son riding and you
+Owen Preece sure
Very Cool... I'm just getting into Vintage BMX Bikes. But now I want a New Style Bike, to add to the collection...
Good comparison... I'm a BMX rider in the 80's too.

Love the old school
Pk Ripper!
Those Hutche Bear Trapp pedals from memory were very hungry 😯
Hey Clint, stay safe during Irma if it does hit, I'm in Tallahassee myself. my prayers go out to your family and others that are affected by the storm.
+Equinox thank you

Idk about your BMX bike but the side pull brakes on my 94 gt Dyno vfr work like a dream
I miss my JMC but I don't miss my bear trap pedals and two layers of stitches I needed when the pedal hit me just below the knee cap.
Thanks for the video.
Those things were lethal.
Honestly I stumbled upon this video by accident and enjoyed it, thank you for the video.
the old hutch! that makes me feel old!

I never found 3piece cranks that held up to the jumps we did in the 80's. V-bars were like adding 10hp lol. Rode a Redline.

I'm 46, and I ride both BMX and mountain bike. I think they compliment one another. Also, when that gate drops, BMX is such an adrenaline rush.
Ian Smith Riders ready… Watch the gate…..CLANG!! Man I miss that!
Thanks brother, I just bought an old bmx that I thought was an old looptail mongoose but now watching your video I think it's a hutch! Appreciate it
Dang, that Chase cost a lot more too!!! I spent less on two bikes for my son (20” and 24”cruiser) but the Chase I believe is the best!!!
wow brings back memories I had a hutch pro racer back in 83 great video 😎

Riders ready,on the gate ,watch the light. Raced all through the 90s
That's a Bullseye BB on the Hutch. I had one on my old PK (and now it's in a bin).
HATED that Bullseye BB.....so much trouble...
Redline Flite cranks were pinch bolt too back in the day :-)
Cool vid Clint. I still have my 1980's GT that I custom built with my dad. I have a Uni seat and the Hutch Bear Trap pedals of note.
LOL when I showed my kids the bikes we rode in the 80’s, their response was “Those look stupid. Why couldn’t people tell back then that those look stupid?”
FWIW I rode a General RL Osborne bike.
Nice Hutch! I had one and broke the frame. They honored the lifetime warranty too. I wish I had kept it. I love to watch your videos. I just bought the 2019 Giant Fathom 1 bc of your videos.

Haha! Kewl video man!! 1982 huh? That's exactly when I was into BMX. Right when E.T: was popular!
Dang I sure wish I still had my old Redline bike :(. It got stolen long ago.
Just a couple of years later Hutch were making some awesome BMX hardware
I just bought a CHASE RSP 5.0 🤟🤟🤙🤙
I do miss my GT, DYNO and Diamondback though. Good on ya for keeping the HUTCH
Your's is cool. I also had a BMX in the 90's but it feel apart. Miss that though.

Bullseye! They're shop was in the city I grew up. Burbank, CA.
Clint bmx is awesome. I dream about that hutch. You should be riding that bike. Take ie to a pumptrack.
The fact that you still have your Hutch and passed it down to your son to use is totally ‘RAD’!
Retro for the win. I still have my '93 Robinson Pro since it was new.
I had a Hutch Pro Racer. You made my day :) Great video. Interesting to see how the sport has changed.
Michael Byrne - I'm in the Hutch Pro Racer club too - Clint should get some Hutch Bear Trap pedals and Redline flight cranks - Hurts me to see it looking so unloved.
I was hoping you'd talk about the geometry
Really neat I raced a hutch pro racer maybe 85.b.m.x Shorham N.Y. Bear trap pedels
Old is gold.... nice bike!

pimp that thing out with profile racing hubs , the are built in FL. aj's in valrico sells everything that profile makes.
Also the difference in stems was that the quail stem was 1inch and now they are 1 1/8 or 1 1/8 tapered to 1.5 head tube... .the Hutch doesn't have cantilever brakes on it either.
Brings back memories
that Hutch is priceless
Good video. I wanted a BMX but ended up with a Grifter XL instead! Cool bike too.
🤭🙄🤣🤙🤙🤙
A real monster those grifters with the gears...weighed a ton but indestructible🤣🤣🤙
Hutch was a good bike back then
I used a few different frames

In the 80s the bikes were nicer looking with more character but I the modern bikes are on another level
Square taper BB’s stripped really easy, good riddens.
You had to keep 'em tight......once you hear one creaking as you pedal, get the socket set out and tighten that bitch with a breaker bar!
One of my friends had a carbon fiber Cannondale bmx bike, back in the mid 90s, I remember it costing like 1000 bucks or something
The Hutch has caliper brakes, not cantilevers. Cantilever pivots are mounted on the frame. Those Hutch bikes are collectibles now, as were the 60s Spyder bike riders when they hit middle age.
I have a 1978 Huffy ThunderRoad and its a bike that was built to last and its faster then i thought it could be
I used a powerlite back in the day.
that hutch is beautiful dude
Great video-Thanks for making it!
I’ll take the Hutch, thank you.
One things for sure, the retro BMX looks tight as all hell compared to the modern BMX.. Go cruising on the retro, go racing on the modern.
the Hutch is beautiful. i dont know what that other bike is, but if you say BMX I imagine a bike that looks like yours.
I like your hutch BMX
Things have definitely changed. Still fun, though.
He already has carbon parts???
One good question is, will that new BMX bike survive the test of time as that Hutch has? those 80's BMX bikes were work horses.. I regret leaving my 83 GT Pro Racer when I moved, have never been able to get another one like it :(
I like the older one.
I want that hutch haha
