How to charge two 6V Lead-acid batteries with 12V pulse charger (Two battery charge in series)

So it appears when one battery is full or near full charge state and the 2nd battery is somewhat discharged that connecting them in series does not bring both batteries to equal voltage level. One was 6.6 vs 6.3. Is there a way to correct this or they will have to be charged individually and then reconnect in series?
