intheblues Damn, that's a tasty sounding (and looking) guitar! Definitely something odd going on with whatever plugin/nle you've used to do the lower thirds... Hope you work it out and fix it soon (hopefully before the next vid!) 😀. But even with the crazy lower thirds, that guitar is amazing!
Hagstrom Viking player here! I love it - no desire to change the pickups and plays beautifully, makes me very intrigued to try out the Swede series too

Thanks for the video Shane. It really helped. Bought one. Love it. A few bits needed tightening up when I bought it, but that was it. Awesome guitar for the price. Love the split tone switches.
Hagström is such a value brand, I've played the Super Viking and love it. I own a Super Swede which is my daily driver. Does aaaanything I ask it to :)

It's a really cool take on .38 Special...Listen to "Hold On Losely." They really took Southern Rock mainstream.
I'm surprised you didn't cover the coil splitting (both pickups are coil-split, tone pots are push-pull). Mixing single-coil and humbucker modes in the middle position could produce some nice tones.

Hi Dan, yeah you're right mate. It did have coil split. I went back today to make sure and you were spot on. The funny thing is the other Hangstrom Viking didn't have it so I never thought to check. 😳
All good mate. It's one of the features that made me order the Super over the Deluxe. Would like to hear what you think of the single coil mode if you get the chance to play it.
Hi Shane- First, and again, thank you for always describing the neck profile as you do. This is something most reviewers leave out and it's an important aspect (for me at least). Anyway, great guitar, great review, you're always on point displaying look, feel and tone of these guitars. Thanks man!
Sounds nice, good 335 alternative. A former band member had one of these, only complaint was the tail piece started to rust almost immediately, like after the first three set gig in July that we played. They did replace the part for him. Good customer service.
Great example of just how good some low/mid-priced MIC instruments can be. Ibanez has likewise shown that they can manufacture in China and deliver a quality instrument at a fraction of the cost, with really impressive, consistent quality control.
I gave a hard look at a Hag as a low-priced '335 style' semi-HB, favoring it for the money vs. comparably priced Epiphones. In the end, I couldn't pass up a great deal I got on a super clean, gently used Ibanez AS103-NT. The fit and finish are fantastic and, at the price point, actually pretty stunning. It plays and sounds great. Eventually, maybe a pickup swap, but there's no shame in the stock pickups. Even the electronics inside are neat as a pin. Some great deals to be found on some of the MIC models. It just goes to show, if a manufacturer finds a strong, reliable partner and takes tight ownership and control over the parts, process and quality assurance, it really doesn't matter where it's produced.
I bought the Baltic Sea Super Viking last year, and, if you think the red one is pretty, the blue is spectacular. It's my second Hagstrom; I bought an Ultra Swede a couple years back and it's basically my ideal practice guitar; it's the singly-most comfortable guitar I've ever picked up, and love it. The Super Viking's also great, and Hagstrom's necks just fit in my hands perfectly. Love them.
Also, they're a Swedish company, so the whole "Viking" thing does make some sense . . .

if you pull up on the volume knobs you can also split the humbuckers .......... you kinda missed that great feature
I tried this in a shop, and thought generally it was a great gig worthy instrument. Nice feel, great pickups and the 25.5 inch scale makes very familiar for fender scale players.

Nice job Shane! It sounds a lot like my Epi Sharaton II. I think the Viking Series has a 14 or 15" Radius where the Epi has a 12". Being that my fingers are thin and short (I'm 5'4") the Epi has a little better Neck feel to me than the Hagstrom but the guitar sounds Great. And sounds good through your DSL-40CR. Thanks man!!
By the way .......the HAGSTROM trussrods are designed very differently than standard necks . The truss rod is quite substantial and is engineered differently, which I do suspect contributed not only to stability but also to its overall tone.

unless you mentioned it or I missed it , or unless you recorded this unusually or the amp was set unusually , in clean mode the neck pickup at least, sounded very clean, more Gretschy than Gibsonish .........is that how you (Shayne) experienced it ?

Yes the hagstrom guitar is *ASSEMBLED* in China. But people don’t know that all of the parts are *FROM SWEDEN*. Then are later shipped to China for assembly. So it’s not a guitar from China.
I got to try the lefty Hagstrom guitars at NAMM. Really liked the Ultra Swede too. I tried the Super Viking and for the price it seems like a really good buy. I liked the look of the Fantomen but no lefty. Not sure if they offer that one in lefty yet.
Would have thought a "Super" would have a Bigsby style tail piece. It should give some vibrato just by pushing on it though as it looks like it is hinged. Do they import to NZ?
THAT is a beautiful guitar. The neck pick up sounds super smoothe.
I have an Epiphone Dot, but this one looks really superior. Might try to get one soon, but they are impossible to find here in Brazil

I had a few people mention that. I went back to the shop today and it does. They had another Hagstrom Viking that didn't have push pull so I didn't think to check it out when I had it. :-)

The viking is an all round guitar. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Rockabilly it can play all styles
looks super!...got a little something of few brands in the same price bracket - but WoW sounds great

Did you notice any neck dive, or the body falling forward when on the strap?
Looks alot like the guild starfire...sounds great shane...are they filertron or dearmond pichips?..either way you prove your tone an sound is in ur ears an fingers...i have a 58 barnie kessel hagstrom with single cool toaster pickups same harp style string trapeze similar to this but pointy horns an with supa fat neck like Louisville slugger sawn in half an huge valute in neck at heel of yhe neck...u referenced it as a dud the one u didnt like an other people have told me that they model yhe body around.the later 60's stuff now the older model i have has feed back problems sometimes an its uncontrollable...an because of the neck being bigger in that shows neck stress because of bolting pattern that all changed after 1963

Which guitar Is Better? Super viking or viking? And why??
The Super Viking has independently coil-tapped pickups, so it really increases the kinds of sounds you can make with it. Played both of them, bought the Super because I really liked the diversity of tones I could get out of the thing.

That Hagstrom looks and sounds great.
I used to own one of these for a while. I find it has a kind of gnarly sound to it when distorted -- in a good way -- kind of like how SGs sound a bit gnarly compared to Les Pauls.
Funny thing is they're probably made better than they were when they first came out. When they first came out they were kind of cheesy. But they did get better. I guess there as good as anything else coming out of Asia. When the Vikings first came out they were bolt on necks.
But the ORIGINAL Hagstroms were made in SWEDEN!

There's no comparison between these pickups, which are so so, and the original Custom 58 humbuckers from the seventies.
I was talking about the sixties but you're right the pickups were better I'm sure.

Build quality there’s not much in it. Tone wise they are both nice but this guitar sounds killer. These pickups are awesome I was really impressed.
How does this one compare to the regular Hagstrom Viking?

Honestly...I've tried a few Hagstroms in the past. Pretty guitars but not overly impressed. This sounds pretty good man. Its got me looking twice. BTW...I think your Bandits are getting a little jealous over your newest amp. LOL

Well, damn. Now i need to compare this (the Bigsby version) with a Gretsch G5422T.... And then decide between one of those two versus a Jazzmaster.... Nice, demo, Shane.
Sounds great but I would worry about its resale value too much to buy one new.

These guitars are'nt expensive.....
I always found it crazy how China can build these 335 guitars as cheap as they do. Gibson Rickenbacker Gretsch all their semi-hollow bodies are 3 or $4,000 dollars how does China do it. I have a hunch.lol Gibson makes a 335 for $4,000 China can make one for $300 seriously lol can't figure that out.
£750/£800 new so not cheap and cant sell used on ebay for £200, I rest my case.

Well it IS a Swedish brand!
This is a step up from the Viking Deluxe, which is a step up from the standard Viking. IIRC, the "Super" part defines its scale length (25.5" rather than the usual 24.75"), but it has upgraded pickups and coil tapping as well.
