Yes to the most important point of this video - getting your mindset right! That is so important and not discussed enough. The bike, the gear, the physical readiness, it'll mean nothing if your mind quits mid tour. Another excellent video!
Good to see one of your videos show up on my sub list. Stay safe man. I got a senior railcard to help me out for those big distances. There's a lot of the UK I've not seen yet, much of it is flat as I tend to head for the hills, that's being a Scot I think. As a former pathfinder I am very familiar with maps.
Great video, thanks! I do long solo rides, such as e.g. SFO to NYC earlier this year, and from where I'm standing your recommendations and remarks are all very accurate and relevant. You're so right about getting your mind ready. To me, it all boils down to enjoyability, ideally on three levels. One, enjoying the very moment of riding, which is, depending on the conditions is not always easy, but again, this is a mind thing. As I noticed, you can rewire your mind to enable yourself to enjoy what you normally couldn't, it's just about the consciousness of how you look at yourself and your situation. I learned to derive joy even from unpleasant and harsh conditions by reminding myself that I've seen worse and I eventually mastered it all. Second, getting a feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day. Given the joys of the upcoming rest this is usually easy. On that note, I usually do stealth camping. Third, enjoying your bike trip in retrospect. That's the easiest. :)
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Sorry about the slow response. Tunnel Hill is a great trail. I'm out there a couple days per week lately. Have a great ride. Stay safe and ride on!!
Love the new video Paul. You are absolutely right. When I did my first weekend trip, I was most stressed about doing the 65 miles on the second day! It all turned out good. Hoping to do the Ohio-Erie this Summer, wish me luck! Hope your touring season goes well! Thanks again for everything!
Those tires you have on there are a great decision, you won't regret buying them. I did a ride from Augusta Maine to Providence Rhode Island and back due to my trek shedding spokes. I accidentally ran over glass that would give a regular tire a slow leak and I even had a screw that didn't puncture. Safe travels 🙏.
My first actual touring bike was my Miyata 610. 1986. Still got it. Stopped counting miles used after 250,000. Ive replaced everything on it except the main frame. Its now on the wall of the garage. Love that thing but seldom used. Used to commute 24 mile one way to work years ago plus weekend riding. Now 76, I don't ride anywhere near that kind of mileage these days. I just putter around but still enjoy the rides. Thanks for your videos. Really fun to watch.
Paul you keep things simple. I really appreciate your honesty and respect for the craft. Hard work and a can do attitude. From Moline Illinois, see you out on the trail. Agape and phileo
Sorry about the slow response. Been out biking on some rail trails. New videos are coming soon. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Good luck on your bike tour Paul! I traveled the OTET earlier this year and was happy to see all the spots from your last video. Keep up with the videos!
My MAN!!!! that is great! I will love to join you while you are Blooming-Normal on route 66, there is some nice trails alongside the town!!! stay safe in the road!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I'm already home from bike touring this summer. I've been editing video, but it takes the longest time. Plus I've been procrastinating. Next time. Rt. 66 in Illinois is pretty cool. More videos to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
G’day Paul, wanted to thank you for all your films, I am about to embark my 1st bike tour next week, I will fly from Sydney to Seoul to do the ride and looking forward to it. good to hear you are getting ready for another tour. Now go n ride your bike :-)
I just had to send my mind how to prepare this video timing came out great . Helpful equipment bicycle tips. I didn't think grease the wheel hub bearings once a year.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Once I let the hubs go without cleaning and re-greasing. After 5000 miles, it damaged the hub. I always learn the hard way. Stay safe and ride on!!
You forgot to mention that the more you do these trips the less stressful it is during planning and when the detailed plans don't work out and you have to wing it! My roughly 1,200 mile trip this past August/September was the least stressful trip I've done of the 7 tours I've done. Things like understanding it's okay to take a short day or a rest day if your body is loudly complaining; or change up the route based on the latest information on conditions (e.g., weather, road, shelter and food information) takes a lot of stress off also.
Sounds great. I've toured the Oregon coast as well as the Cascades from Hood River to Klamath. Is Eugene in the Willamette Valley? What a great place to ride. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Informative and helpful as always. I'm always happy when I find you have done a video on a trail I'm about to do because it gives me a good idea of what to expect. I appreciate your efforts; I'm aware of how much work and time it can be to video a ride.
I'm really looking forward to following along on your trip. Last year I toured and I used Amtrak quite a bit and it worked out real good. Effingham was my base, Chicago my hub for points East and West. Have a great ride!🚴
Before Surly, (and after Miyata) the Trek 520 was the most common touring bike I would see while out touring. I loved mine. Unfortunately it got totaled. No details yet.
Thanks for this. I'm planning a tour across Illinios next summer and didn't know about the Illinois bike maps. Those look incredible. I put in a request for them as soon as I watched your video. Planning the route is half the fun! Also love the 360 camera views.
Hi Paul, Thanks for another great video, It had been awhile and I missed seeing your adventures. I had not ridden as much as I wanted / should have this fall. You always inspire to get back out there. Look forward to seeing your next adventure. All the best!
I like northern Illinois for bicycle touring, too. If you head to Jo Daviess County you'll be able to find plenty of hills. Looking forward to seeing the places where you go.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. On my way home I went through Galena and Savannah along the river. More videos to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
I try to ride at least 45 min. 4+ times a week at a brisk pace. At 58 and a lifelong cyclist I can say for certain I've been in better shape than most coworkers, most acquaintances etc. And I work moderate to hard physical construction/welding etc. Movement is life folks, still strong, healthy and prescip. Free. Happy trails...
I so thought you will be done bicycle touring because of winter setting in but wow that's cool and this year you inspired me to Bicycle the Tennessee Tweetsie trail from Johnson City to Elizabethton for My First Time bicycling overnight. Have a safe ride and can't wait to see you where you go.
Hey Paul glad to see this new video love your channel and your approach to biking but one request if you could make a video on the equipment you use to make your videos those shots and camera angles are awesome safe travels
Haha, and while replacing warn out parts make sure you torque down those parts......or not...which explains why I had a stripped crank bolt two weeks into my Danube bike tour this summer. :P
Hi Paul, so great to have a new video from you! You and your videos have inspired me to plan a full length Katy trip next year. Just like the contents of.this video, the time between now and then will be spent planning and conditioning. A Katy trip is the result of my own search for life and joy! I live in Springfield. On your way through-if you need ANYTHING-please do not hesitate if I can lend a hand to help you on your way! I wish you good fortune and safe travels on your trip!
Thanks! I really appreciate it. My wife is from Springfield and her Mom still lives there. I've finished my bike touring for the summer and have been editing video. More to come. Had to stop for a Horseshoe. Thanks again. Stay safe and ride on!!
Hey Paul, I'm a big fan. I'm planning my first big tour, an East bound TransAmerica, in summer 2023. It would be fun to meet your wife in one of your videos.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Sounds like a great ride. My wife is a bit camera shy, but sometimes I can talk her into being in a shot. She looks better on screen than I do, that's for sure. Stay safe and ride on!!
Hi Paul. Great video as always. Last September I loaded all my stuff up from my Idaho home flew to New England and did a big loop ride. It was great. Pedal on and be safe.
Paul, as years pass it is getting harder to bike. But there's good news. You can get an e-bike if you don't have one already. That would make local rides a little easier. If you don't want an ebike there's a Catrike that suits your needs. I've got one and it makes biking a lot easier.
thank god you put out another video !!! we have been waiting for ages and we always look forward to seeing what you are up to, as for those long hard rides, you may wish to look into e converting you bike, both my wife and i got two of those bafang 750 watt motor mid drive conversion kit off ebay for $1,300 each with a triangle 20ah battery and we get over 620km to one charge, that is with peddle assist level 1 and us doing 90% of the work, it helps with climbing steep hills and peddling against the wind.
Thanks for watching! I'm not ready for an e-bike yet, but I'm seeing them everywhere. In 5 years probably everyone will have one. Stay safe and ride on!!
Great to see a new video and looking forward to seeing your latest adventures. I ride a recumbent trike so comfort is never something I need to get used to, plus I live in a warm climate and it’s always riding season. When I get on 2 wheels, I wonder why I’m not on 3. Thanks for sharing Paul.
Heya Paul, welcome back! I was so delightfully surprised to have another of your excellent videos arrive in my notifications box!! Yes, the body has to build up resilience and you are so right about getting the mind honed in! I do think you have the right idea about packing a bit lighter in the tool department! The Trek looks awesome and it will be interesting to see how it holds up compared to the Miata. Hope you packed your "Sit Upon" ! Thanks for sharing this! Will wait patiently for more. Smiles Geoffrey VéloKröte
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I still carry too many tools. The Trek is a great bike, but I miss my Miyata. Can't bike tour without my 'sit upon'. Saved my a$$ more than once, literally. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Hi Paul. Just watched your video, having also watched your previous videos a little while ago. I've started to do bike touring again here in the U.K. after a very long 'lay-off'. You really do inspire; I'm so grateful. Can't wait to see a record of your next adventure. Happy bike riding.
Hi, Paul. Your video couldn't have been posted at a better time for me! For many months I've only been riding an average of 2x/month at 26 miles/trip, but last Sunday I rode 47 miles to gauge my fitness, but ended up gauging my saddle soreness vulnerability more. I'm running a Brooks B17 with about 400-500 miles on it and the first 1/2 of the ride was perfectly fine, but the 2nd 1/2 was Sore City. I have but don't like using padded cycling shorts, so I'm wondering if my toosh toughness can be built up over a period of several months? Ultimately, I would like to be able to ride 50-70 miles/day without too much saddle soreness and hope to build up to this by this coming March for a San Francisco to Los Angeles bike tour down the Pacific Coast Highway. Wishing you a fantastic bike tour, Paul! Stay safe!
Hi Sean, I've been riding Brooks B-17 saddles over 40 years on tours. There are two ways to break them in: Quickest way, take saddle and dip it quickly (5-10 seconds) in a sink of warm water, remove excess water and slather thick coat of Brooks Proofide product on the top and underside of saddle, immediately go for a ride. The Proofide will soak into the leather quickly. Then apply another thick coat just on the underside of the saddle. This method is not recommended for longevity, but it will get your Brooks ready fast. The best way to break in the Brooks, new from box, is a thick coat of Proofide on the top and underside and go for a ride in old shorts. It will soak in on the ride, then apply another coat on the underside, and go for a ride the next day. That will soak in too. Third day, another light coat underside, go for a ride, and you should start to see two indentations for your sit bones. You're almost there. About one month later you might need another light coat of Proofide on the underside. Then once every six months or so if you ride much. Good luck, they are the best saddle for touring if taken care of.
@@Mike-vd2qt Thanks, Mike! I definitely Proofided the B17 on both top and bottom quite generously as soon as I received it, and then the next week after a few rides. I've not applied any since. I had no idea about the dipping in warm water technique! I'll have to give that a try followed by add'l Proofide applications. Thanks again, Mike, from myself and my butt. :-)
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. For saddle sores, I use a good saddle (Terry Liberator) and good riding shorts. I wear clean shorts every ride and try to keep my skin clean. Sometimes I still get saddle sore. Over time my seat usually toughens up and the soreness subsides. I've never tried a Brooks. Good luck and ride on!!
The only advantage I see with disc brakes is better stopping power in wet weather. But I've heard disc brakes can be hard to keep adjusted. Thanks again.
I was down for the count for almost a year due to a number of foot surgeries, getting back to it is always a tough road! Looking forward to your upcoming videos - I just finished a great set of trails (may want to add to your radar) Greenbrier River Trail (WV) New River Trail (VA) & Virginia Creeper Trail (VA). All great rides with some great scenery, you should check them out also. have a great riding season, be safe.
I admire that you have a shed and all the tools needed to fix your bike, I am still not on the level unfortunately, need to train myself further to fix easy problems, or even my whole bike. But, one day :) BTW; I just love that "old school" Trek :) I have a Trek myself and it is the most wonderful thing I ever owned!
You can do it! Being able to fix basic basic bike problems gives me peace of mind while out touring. I love my Trek also. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and ride on!!
I worked my way through the entire library and then bam a new video. I was smiling before I even clicked play. Great to have you back!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Good luck on your riding season ahead Paul and thanks for sharing the adventure with us all.
You bet. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and ride on!!
Hey Paul are you making videos?
Yes to the most important point of this video - getting your mindset right! That is so important and not discussed enough. The bike, the gear, the physical readiness, it'll mean nothing if your mind quits mid tour. Another excellent video!
Wheels!! Thanks again. Gotta get your mind right 'cause it's almost as much mental as it is physical. Stay safe and ride on!!
Will do. On my list, riding in the UK. One of these days. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and ride on!!
Interesting video! Subscribed. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the sub! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Thanks for the sub! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
thanks Paul, keeping it real as ever. looking forward to watching your tour. great stuff
Glad you enjoyed it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
I love your style, God bless you.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. God bless you, too. Stay safe and ride on!!

Sounds like you get bike touring like I get bike touring. Thanks for watching! More to come. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!!
You are engaging! No nonsense and positive outlook, great music, easy voice cadence, and terrific content
Wow, thank you. I really appreciate it! Stay safe and ride on!
Thank you Paul for another wonderful video! Safe travels and look forward to more beautiful scenery and American history lessons! Cheers from 🇨🇦
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!! Greetings from the Land of Lincoln. 😎
Got a chance to ride the Tunnel Hill Trail last month as part of our Fall 2022 tour … excellent training ground.
I saw that. I am sorry I missed you. It would have been fun to see you out on my trail. Stay safe and ride on!!
Common sense from the man. Good to see you back, Paul. Gary from Ontario..
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!! Greetings from southern Illinois. 😎

@@paulsuchecki3985 mixing bikes with teaching biology was rather nice.
It's so cool to see you riding the Tunnel Hill Trail since I rode from Karnak to Harrisburg and back in 2 days. Really a nice trail to ride..
Good stuff. The Ohio to Erie is a great ride. Thanks for watching! More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Sometimes wider is better. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
My first actual touring bike was my Miyata 610. 1986. Still got it. Stopped counting miles used after 250,000. Ive replaced everything on it except the main frame. Its now on the wall of the garage. That's alot of miles! The 610 is a mighty fine touring bike. Thanks again.
Paul you keep things simple. I really appreciate your honesty and respect for the craft. Hard work and a can do attitude. From Moline Illinois, see you out on the trail. Agape and phileo
Thanks again Bro, I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!!

Howdy Paul. I just completed my first bike tour- 4 days. Your video storytelling was my inspiration. Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. Give it a try.

Thanks for watching! It's a quiet lonely trail, that's what I like about it. Ride on!!
Great to see a new video ❤
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Haha, and while replacing warn out parts make sure you torque down those parts......or not...which explains why I had a stripped crank bolt two weeks into my Danube bike tour this summer. :P
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
Sounds great! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
Paul, as years pass it is getting harder to bike. But there's good news. You can get an e-bike if you don't have one already. That would make local rides a little easier. If you don't want an ebike there's a Catrike that suits your needs. I've got one and it makes biking a lot easier.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Not ready for an e-bike yet. Maybe some day. Stay safe and ride on!!
thank god you put out another video !!! we have been waiting for ages and we always look forward to seeing what you are up to, as for those long hard rides, you may wish to look into e converting you bike, both my wife and i got two of those bafang 750 watt motor mid drive conversion kit off ebay for $1,300 each with a triangle 20ah battery and we get over 620km to one charge, that is with peddle assist level 1 and us doing 90% of the work, it helps with climbing steep hills and peddling against the wind.
Thanks for watching! I'm not ready for an e-bike yet, but I'm seeing them everywhere. In 5 years probably everyone will have one. Stay safe and ride on!!
Nice video Paul and great camera views!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
I Love the Tunnel Hill Trail!
Me too!! It's like my 'home away from home' on the weekends. Hope to see you out there!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Sounds great. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
"Type 2 fun" made my day!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Excellent, Ride On! 😎👍
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. 😎✌
Sounds great! Thanks for watching! More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Glad to see you are back on your bike! Hope you have a good tour up North. Great camera work - love the drone shots, Stay safe!! Bud
Thanks again for your support. I had a great ride, until it ended. But I can't talk about that yet. Hope to see you soon. Paul
@@paulsuchecki3985 I got the time frame wrong - now I understand when this ride occurred!
@@budcline I'm not ready to start riding again yet. Hopefully in the spring.
@@paulsuchecki3985 I hope that timeline works out for you.
Damn, this video really makes me want to start riding right now.
Thanks for watching. Now get out and ride!! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!!
Paul! You're doing movie material! This is more than bike touring videos. You deserve more audience! Love from India!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!

I like the new video.
Thanks, I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!! Sorry for the slow response.
Looks like Paul has some new filming toys!
Added the 360 camera and upgraded my drone. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Have fun.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!!
I went back to v brake from disc...less maintenance less problems
The only advantage I see with disc brakes is better stopping power in wet weather. But I've heard disc brakes can be hard to keep adjusted. Thanks again.
Ride safe!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. More to come. Stay safe and ride on!!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I'm looking into all of those trails, they sound great. More to come. Stay strong!!
I admire that you have a shed and all the tools needed to fix your bike, I am still not on the level unfortunately, need to train myself further to fix easy problems, or even my whole bike. But, one day :)
BTW; I just love that "old school" Trek :) I have a Trek myself and it is the most wonderful thing I ever owned!
You can do it! Being able to fix basic basic bike problems gives me peace of mind while out touring. I love my Trek also. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and ride on!!
best videos. thanks!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
