    WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
    HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

In Australia, there are very few flint and chert surface deposits that have not decomposed to cortex,
or been picked over continually by the previous indigenoue tribes over the last 65,000 year,
who still exist and try to practice the modern version of trbal life.
Watching your approach since your video #150 or so has allowed me to see the results of different approaches and strkes.
Enough to anticipate where you are going, and try to follow your lead.
That is, whenever I find or buy even a little bit of material.
The best success has come when I strike with confifdence.
Even to realise that I was not always striking at ninety degrees to the edge, but angling in th high areas.
Thank you for just knapping mu h more than the #1850 plus videos so far.
I look forward to many more,
    John.

John Oz is full of nice materials. You have absolutely stunning jasper, chalcedony, you also have obsidian and flint. I'm a Brit and have travelled around Oz a couple of times,I understand the distances you'd need to travel to personally source these materials, but it's all part of the knapping experience😂
You could try to locate other Ozzie knappers....there are some out there. Have a chat with them and see what they're using, see if they wanna do a material swap or just pick their brains for local info. Look up where the materials are obviously and go from there. Sourcing quality materials is crucial and addictive....very very addictive😂. Pat has mentioned many times over the years how important it is to get the right materials and that if you're failing constantly it might not be you but the material you're knapping. Those words changed EVERYTHING for me personally and it was a revelation. I went into my local materials like a maniac, testing everything, going to every pit, quarry, chalk face I could find and testing, trying to find prehistoric works(they knew what they were after) and over time getting a real knowledge of what's what basically. An overall picture of the right material and where to get it.
Oz has unbelievably harsh surface conditions but if you have weather/sun damaged material on the surface have you tried going deep in those areas to rock that isn't surface damaged? Check for any building/mining in the area and have a chat with the workers to see if they can let you look for rock in newly exposed ground etc.
Personally I'd be hunting that stunning Mookait jasper whatever that involved. It can't be stressed enough how important the rock is and the difference it can make to your knapping and the outcome of the piece.
I appreciate just how hard it must be in Oz but with some research I bet there's a decent material of some sort.... within flying distance😂.
There's a whole load of us knappers that owe Pat a whole lot. He's given me the knowledge and ability to make pretty much what I want now and I'm forever grateful to him for that. I'm sure I'm not the only one either.... he's the guru man.
Good luck with the rock John.🤞

I really appreciate the little knife part of this video, helped me understand a better way to wrap twine/thread on the handle. Thanks Patrick, love your videos. Please show us the new outdoor knapping spot as you are setting it up I would like to see your knapping spot setup tips and ideas. I just found out about the 5 gallon bucket seat covers and tool holders from a recent knap in. Very cool to have a portable all in one setup.

When I started, I didn't use a glove at first. After a while of banging and slicing my fingers I finally got a glove. And immediately started improving with taking flakes because I realized I'd developed a flinch, dreading the pain knapping without a glove. Glove took care of that.

I watch you knap and try to figure out which spot you're going to strike next.
I say to myself "There's a platform; he'll hit it there next."
Nope. The flake you made the little knife out of I was yelling way before "Hit it there!"
I guess I'll never be a knapper. I did know what the abrader was about though. :)

8:39 I'd be surprised if it spontaneously snapped in half considering you just drove one nice solid flake along the whole length.
Though I suppose rocks will be rocks.

Yes, but it's a weird feeling. The stone often changes drastically.

I think our British humour is largely built on it in a way. It has to be done right and be subtle and tongue in cheek. Unless you're on a building site and then it can be hilariously brutal too😂. It has to be done just right and at the right time. Linguistic art😂

@@scottlaugher-flintknapping my family came from Lincolnshire. My 9th or 10th Great Grandfather was the last man to be hanged and gibotted in the UK. He was up there for 36 years. He robbed the Rutherom Mail or something like that in 1792.. Search Spence Broughton The Man In The Cage. Theres a video about it on here. Theres a shrine to him outside a pub somewhere over there.

      @@RedEyedPatriot wow !! Now that's a claim to fame. Very cool...I think.
My local common is called ' gallows tree common' and leading off it is ' pack and prime lane'. It got the name because of local highwaymen...pack and prime your pistol before going down the lane. So much history....today on one dog walk I picked up a neolithic blade core, bronze age and iron age pottery. That's a fairly typical walk at the moment too. Thanks for your reply.
