Well this is incredibly “real life” with budgets and such… and I’m here for it. Over consumption is next level and makes us feel anxious about missing out. But your inspired look you created is fab and very likely super similar

    • @aliciaarcher

Thank you! The overconsumption is outrageous. The fact that anything can be purchased at the press of a button makes it devilishly easy to break the bank. I love to shop, but have waited longer, and thought about my wish list before pulling the trigger.

@@Dana-712FifthAveI think it’s the reality of having big investors on board. Shareholders these days no longer accept that their investments are made at a risk of loss. They want continuous profits. So these companies keep releasing what will sell to the masses. It would be nice to have old-style releases 1-2 times a year, but I guess the numbers don’t add up 🤷🏾‍♀️

I love the concept of this video!! It's honestly refreshing to watch someone use what they already have instead of buying the next exciting thing, even if it means missing out. We really should embrace FOMO more often. It's okay to miss things sometimes. ❤️

    • @BelindaShort

The thing is, FOMO is a created feeling that marketing has done to us. We need to start deprogramming ourselves to think we need everything

    • @aliciaarcher
      @aliciaarcher  2 місяці тому +9

Right! As Belinda said I think marketing has GROWN exponentially over the years, and they rely on those tactics to draw in more consumers. But the only ones who can stop the cycle is us, and sometimes it’s tough to peel ourselves away from those feelings. I realized after experiencing that “OH NO!”, moment-that it was temporary. And it taught me to get comfortable with that fleeting unease.

So I can share that these past couple years I was out of work … I quit my job because my mental health was at stake … so money was tight 😅 what actually happened genuinely surprised me in a good way ! I have bought less and less and less and especially make up and it has been refreshing ! I have been able to use what I have in my stash and I’ve enjoyed that process ! I’ve been using my Tom Ford quads like I had commented in another video other things I’ve bought that I never touched. I’ve been very picky and very selective and getting very few of what I want. I’ve come to the realization that we have to get out of this “collection” mentality because of the end of the day we do not need to have it all. ❤ with all of the said I will not be getting those Pat McGrath quads. I have seen a couple of videos. I have seen a couple of swatches and it all looks abysmal. I literally have all of her motherships most of her 6 pan pallets, all of her highlighters and all of her previous quads in the luxe packaging & all of her quints. I’m just gonna enjoy what I have ! ❤❤❤

I got Opalescent Orchid and I loveeee! I will give it a 7/10. I deducted 1 star because I would have paid the extra $$ to get it in the lacquer packaging, another star because although it's the US formula, it's not creamy and buttery like the other PML palettes that have the US formula (mega palettes, a few quads and Mothership 4 Decadence). It's texture is quite dry. The quality is the worst I've seen from Pat, HOWEVER the shadows still perform! The final star deduction: there are no baked shades and she knows we want them. However, the color story is so whimsical! I wore it three days in a row! So pretty! Something about the color story that, it makes me happy! I hope you reconsider buying it! If you do, I'll be watching your video! Love your eyelook!

If you wanted so ways to prolong the shelf life of vegetables here are some tips that I do as a vegan that cooks a lot with veggies!
1:don’t overbuy vegetables, I often found myself before buying too many vegetables. They’d all spoil before I could get to them. Instead I’d recommend if you are cooking for yourself choose 2 fresh vegetables like kale, spinach, Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, etc. and those will be your weekly vegetables. You can buy more frozen veggies or buy one more types of fresh veggie if you feel the need.
2: frozen vegetables are great! Freezing things like peas, leafy greens, and etc is a great option for quickly adding them to dishes
3: my final suggestions is to get creative, or just throw veggies into stuff. Sometimes we don’t want to think much and just throw stuff together, which is so relatable. So do it! It’s actually been such a great way for me to get creative! Also the quicker cooking the vegetable the better as this leads to better result when just throwing stuff together.
If you choose to read this, I hope this helps! I love cooking with veggies but it’s all about creating a habit, and to sometimes just be lazy and creative haha! All the love to you friend! ♥️

What has helped me buy less is to depot my quads in large palettes and being aware of what I use and I don’t. If I use it, great- let’s keep using it. If I don’t, learn from it and don’t repeat. Mother has left...
Previously the cheaper holiday Mega Palettes (18 shades) had been in cardboard and made in the USA, the rest was luxurious packaging and made in Italy.
22,7g 82$ Celestrial Nirvana, Celestrial Odyssey, Celestial Divinity. With Divinity and Odyssey we got duochromes, Nirvana was cheapend by leaving them out.
3,61$ per gramm eyeshadow, still ok.
These quads: 56$ for 4g is 14$ per gramm!!! Made in the USA, not the Italian formula.
Cheap packaging, cheap formula but highest price ever!
For comparison: a baked quad is 62$ for 4,7 to 5,2 (depends on formula) let's take 5g as baseline, that makes it 12,40$ for 1g baked eyeshadow in luxurious packaging.

I have Opalescent Orchid and can confirm you ARE NOT MISSING OUT. I caved because I was finally glad to have something that was just solely rose pinks and it was in my budget this round. All are pressed shadows. Iridescent Icon and Aqua Aurora are more sheer/topper shades and Lilac Luminary are a bit more pigmented, but nothing spectacular for what we know PML could deliver (and many of us probably have these colors anyway in other palettea). I think CP still has their Sailor Moon palettes thay gives off this color stoey, and a mix and match of previous PML palettes or colors from brands like Danessa Myricks, Sydney Grace, Viseart, etc for cheaper would easily work like how you showed here. I like the palette for myself but definitely would not recommend it for the full price.

Fabulous topic... I get FOMO hard sometimes. Then if I get said Item... I don't even use it that much. If I miss out on it... I don't even think about it after a couple weeks because I'm onto the "Next FOMO" Item.... and frankly, I'm disgusted with myself about it, but happy with this realization and am taking control back. And how I'm taking control is just like you did, using what I have similar to get an inspired look with whatever new color grouping is newly out. It's time I enjoy and appreciate my current collection because I have too much, it's excellent stuff, and it doesn't last forever.

I understand, Alicia. I decluttered so makeup from my collection as well. I had a clean hospital waste trash bag full to the brim with products. I have given away ALL of the products or sold some of it to a few nurses I work with. I'm in healthcare. 😂😅 I haven't purchased any new PMG Labs since late 2022, honestly. I didn't even pick up the last Mothership palette - Moonlit Seduction was the last one I picked up, plus some blush and a quad. I am not feeling any FOMO. I have so many awesome palettes and items left in my collection that I can recreate nearly all looks. I even decluttered brushes that weren't my jam either! My Tita got me 2 Woks (electric and standard), and I purchased some good kitchen knives. Made me feel so grown-up 😂 It definitely upped the kitchen game. Also, the amount of money saved on makeup I have put into my health (losing weight/personal trainer, going to the chiropractor, getting my eyes checked, getting my health checked regularly and finishing my degrees). 🩷

Hi dear Alicia, i think this is the best video i have seen since quite a while!!!👏👏🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Almost 2 years ago i decluttered all PMG shadows, having now too sensitive eyes, i gave them all away, also all Natasha Denona eyeshadow stuff, Sydney Grace, well, not Mels palette, cannot, yet. However: than, there are new rabbit holes, or see them more, like Chantecaille, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent shadows, Japanese shadows etc! I do it better, but still have too much, and i am another simple consumer, it's too much money and too much for the planet as well, great, so honest reminder to keep paying attention to this!!! And i loved the look you created, you're one of these eyeshadow queens, there are not many here, Alicia!!! I just love to watch video's where you use "older" makeup, because there is only one Alicia here!!! And i think Pat missed such an opportunity not hiring you when her products were still sort of super amazing, hope good English, cause YOU are our Pat here, i know you have your fitness business, and that comes first, but she could at least have asked you, she really missed out on that, because if there is anybody who CAN make a gorgeous Pat McGrath eyeshadow look here, it is you of course, i say that since i'm here, since spring 2019, and i still say that!!! Supermarket products, yes everthing is more expensive, we, in The Netherlands have the luck that so much grows here, lots of flowers and veggies, and when we live in our little beach house in summer which is better for my very serious allergic asthma, we can see the giant glass buildings where everything grows, so i have easy talking. But i visited American supermarkets longer ago, in 1995 and 2012, and, what to say, it's different, lets keep it positive. But i think it's such a good idea, to store your veggies in tupperware, Alicia, you always have another option! And you do workout, i can, also having chronical pain for 28 plus years, think i do that in another life time, but i am SO SUPER PROUD of you, and when i see these Insta video's it always inspires me when the air is healthy enough to go outside in summer, to take a few steps more, when i'm able to make a little walk. Walking to the beach is 1 kilometer, and height differences because of the dunes, which is for most people a joke, but for me a total workout, when i achieve that sometimes without using the car, i am soooo super thankful and a little bit proud, Alicia!!! I'm so proud to follow you, and sending you lots of love!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤

I got randomly recommended this video late so sorry but I might be able to help with the wok situation! I grew up with a vintage electric stove (not glasstop) and my mother was Chinese cooking when she was single in the 80s then she taught me on that stove. I know they're not as fancy but try to find a vintage wok out of thin steel or even better if you can find an aluminum one. They tend to have solid wood handles, last forever, and conduct heat really well.

About the Wok: On an electric stove, frankly, a traditional wok doesn't work too well, even if advertised as such. I bought a handhammered carbon steel one that has a flat surface at the bottom, but the surface isn't large enough to conduct the heat well towards the walls of the larger wok. It takes ages for the veg to cook sometimes, it only works for rather small quantities because the heat just doesn't come up the walls like it would with a flame! Just a heads up... I can't quite make it work and will have to find a different shape of wok eventually, as I do quite some asian style stir-fry cooking and kind of rely on a wok...

Sorry for commenting on a past post saying I was waiting for your review - I’m used to seeing you review anything Pat but I never would want to add to pressure to keep up!
I haven’t bought the opalescent orchid palette, and like you I just did a big declutter and I keep thinking how I’m spending money on palettes just to give them away later BUT those are my colors. I’d actually use all of them, and I can’t say that about nearly any quad/palette/etc. I still haven’t hit purchase though because of the price for just 4 shades (I don’t care about plastic vs cardboard) - that’s a similar cost of the 25 or so in a Natasha Denona midi palette.
Thanks for this video and being transparent about costs. I know for a lot of people that the illusion of everyone online being able to afford everything can set an unrealistic expectations for themselves. Sure, some UA-camrs can, but it’s nice to have the contrast of someone admitting there comes consumer debt with that and we don’t need everything.

I loved this video especially the end words and the first words....it actually made me think about Nirvana something which I had my eyes on because it was new, but when I saw the colours I just couldn't justify. Plus, I complained to Pat about the crummy makeup bag I bought for 33 pounds with a toy Elson lipstick. It was broken and the makeup bag looked no more than 4 pounds worth of a fake and nothing like the one in the video on the website. I had spent 93 pounds and I was pissed and disappointed. So this video really pushed me into looking into Natasha Denona I need a warm but I'm not convinced I need it, as I have a lot of these colours too. Thanks for your work, and it spoke to me, I needed to hear that last night so thankyou ....I'm sure I will enjoy looking in future but saving money and using what I have instead of collecting ....

I watched your Addiction Tokyo video and bought the palette shortly after. The launch was just a few days later-such a sweet coincidence! It was my first purchase from the brand, and I've been loving it. I agree that you don't really need it. Half of the palette consists of permanent shades. The color story lacks depth, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does make it less versatile than it could be. Your selection of single shades might be more versatile than the 15th Anniversary palette. Still, it's a great way to get to know the brand.

Having this be your job certainly complicates the analysis compared to the average consumer, but I think you have a healthy outlook. Also I wouldn't worry if you decide to later buy the products (sale or no), as in either case I think it's appropriate and beneficial to discuss the point. I have to admit, I'm about the furthest thing from an impulse buyer (I research eeeeverything to the point where I have to give myself a minimum spend budget on vacations to ensure I get something to remember it) but I have moments when I consume a lot, especially when I'm first getting into a hobby and I want to experience variety or play around. When I first got into cosmetics I had that experience and the biggest thing I'd do to prevent myself from buying something just because it was new was to actively focus my attention on defining what I wanted before I was impacted by advertising. I went through many seasons of Suqqu limited edition blush before the exact color I wanted came out, then I immediately pulled the trigger.
As far as kitchen guidance, three notes: 1) For the knives I'm not saying don't buy them (Made-In seems reputable even if new to the Damascus space and VG-10 should be high quality) but you may want to look at some competitors like Miyabi or Shun. The prices didn't look any cheaper than those well known and it'd be hard to know long term quality if their brand is new, plus there's a bit of overlap in terms of use cases in the kitchen based on shapes of the 3 piece set. Worst case they could be much cheaper on Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Still if they're the perfect knife I'm sure you won't regret them. 2) There are lots of alternative options for Woks and I feel like everyone has their own opinion based on appearance, cooking style, etc. Personally I love the Scanpan Wok, I have a stainless steel bottom version, which has an amazing quality non-stick coating that can also work for very high temperatures and sear well. Any of their brand works well, though none will have the wooden handle. As far as an electric stove, any high quality model should work as long as it has a flat bottom and you can adjust where on the curve of you're cooking but I'd probably go for Carbon Steel over cast iron if you're picking from those two options. 3) I'm sure you're aware, but a great option for vegetables for cooking is to get frozen ones. It doesn't work for everything, but they can be healthier than non-frozen version and many keep very well. You also don't have to worry about the refrigeration and them going bad quite as much. For the refrigerator though I've liked the OXO Green Saver.

Yes! I would like to visit a knife shop in order to learn. I’m excited on this new knife journey I’m about to embark on! 😆

@@aliciaarcher Awsome! Btw next time you visit Tokyo, go to Kappa Bashi (if you don't know that street already). There's kitchenware for a lifetime or two. Personally I don't enjoy cooking, but gosh darn... I love using those Japanese knives! I have enough, but will probably find space in my suitcase for a few more next time I go. (I'd recommend you find the store Washin-Dou - they were so nice, I have to visit them again).

@@MintyParsley thank you for the recommendations! When I visit Tokyo, I’ll need to bring an entire suitcase for brushes, makeup, stationary, and now KNIVES 🤣🤣🤣

I got the Opalescent Orchid palette and I must admit I prefer the similar colors/dupes from Mothers other collections! The quality of the shadows are just not amazing, they are more gritty and have a cheap feeling consistency, and the color payoff is just not great. 😶‍🌫️
I did a shorts video with a look and swatches with dupes also. Although the color story is nice - you are not missing out to be honest! 😉
Like you, I ❤ Pat McGrath Labs and have a big collection, but it's just not the same anymore, and I prefer to pull out the older collections 😢

I’m holding onto the prospect, of the brand crying inside because they need to get rid of the this post pandemic residue product, and are carving out the space for BETTER 😆

Not into Pat anymore. I was hoping releases would get better once it was announced that she was coming back to the creative team, but I’m so not into this release. Thanks so much, Alicia 💛
Edit: Get the knives! We have a gas stove so I can’t comment on the wok, but def treat yourself to those knives!

I’m terrified at how the next mothership is going to look like 😬 Unless they needed to get rid of the residue before releasing something noteworthy. And I will visit a knife store here in NYC where they take you through the full experience!
