Pujois had an injured foot even while he was in St.Louis. Being the gamer he is he didn't go get surgery quick enough. By the time he got the surgery the damage was done. Sadly he will probably walk with a limp the rest of his life, because of his dedication to his fans, owners, & teammates.
But lets not forget, St. Louis did offer him quite a bit of money to stay. He could have taken that contract, and really stung the Birdnals for years to come. St. Louis was damn lucky he didn't take that contract.
Josh Hamilton, Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Chris Davis. (I know he’s not a free agent, but still, the worst contract in the decade. Bobby Bonilla 2.0 right there)
Personally, I was glad to see Pujols go to the Angels. He was always killing the Cubs in every game I saw. Also, nobody held a gun to Arte Moreno's head and demanded he give Pujols the contract. The team knew his production would eventually decline (guess age has something to do with that), but guess they felt the current need was greater than the future need.
In 2011, Pujols last year with the Cards, his WAR dropped to 5.3, his lowest till that time. Since being with the Angels his WAR has been falling every year since. The Cards ducked a big mistake by not resigning him to a large contract and the Angels made that mistake. With that said, Albert is still one of the greatest of all time.
The Cardinals wisely threw the money at Molina which has gotten them several more trips to post season since Albert left. How many post seasons have the Angels got with Pujois ?
Let’s hope after puljos retires angels have the money to actually give trout some good teammates that can help him get more postseason experience or win a world series
I was at the Cubs' game June 6th 2018 where Jason Heyward hit a walk off grand slam against the Phillies. I was with my dad, celebrating his 50th birthday, and for that moment alone, Jason Heyward will always be worth every last dollar that we gave him. He plays a pretty good right field, too.
Being from Anaheim, I'm naturally a Angel's fan... the Contract free agent signings of this decade have hurt us from fielding a winning team for Trouts prime. Unfortunately Pujols contract runs until Trout is 30 and will make $30 mil that final year in 2021...
I remember the day they announced that they signed Jason Bay and I was ecstatic but they turned after the following two years. Just like the Cespedes trade.
Sandoval was doing so well in 2019 I half-hoped he would be traded to an AL contender in the off-chance that he would help them knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs while still being on the Red Sox payroll. Nothing against the Red Sox at all, it just would have been an amazing story. But such was not meant to be.
Cueto has done pretty well for SF. He missed over a year for Tommy John, though at this point, there aren't many pitchers who haven't. He was great in 2016, starting the All-Star Game. In his sole post-season start, he pitched a 1-run complete game. Now if he sucks in 2020, that contract is in big trouble.
Prince Fielder's contract with Texas was awful. Or was he traded to Texas. Not a fan really, so I do not spend a lot of time on the Ranger's transactions.
I was afraid you were talking about the Josh Hamilton part of the video. On top of everything else Hamilton has gone through, his short throw to a fan led to a man falling to his death.
I’m shocked people here are saying that Barry Zito’s contract should be included. Let me tell you all something. Zito didn’t just contribute to the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series in 2012. He won 17 games that year. He was a Dodger killer in his games against the high-budgeted Dodgers in the second half of that season. He saved the Giants during 2012 playoffs with his Game 5 masterpiece (the best game he ever pitched arguably) against the highly favored Cards. In St. Louis. With the Giants down 3 to 1 in the series. An elimination game at that. A game that he won that resulted in the series heading back to San Francisco and allowed the Giants to come back and win the series. Then Zito followed it up by beating Justin Verlander (a Verlander in his prime) in Game 1 of the World Series. Yes, Zito pitched Game 1 of the 2012 World Series over MadBum, Cain, Vogelsong, and Lincecum! Organizations would kill just to have a bad contract but still have “that” player be the savior leading to a World Series Championship. Zito has nothing to be ashamed of. Did he perform up to that contract statistically. Of course not. Even he would probably say he wished he pitched better. But as far as I’m concerned, that contract for Barry Zito was worth the price of the 2012 World Series Championship. He can hold his head up high in San Francisco and should never be in any of these “Worst Contract” rankings. He will forever be a Giant. Period.
Let's be honest here... the majority of these guys simply don't deserve to get such amounts of money. In fact, most professional athletes (in any sport) aren't worth the money being given out to them. But the owners overspend because (in their minds), it simply means beating your competitor to the punch, even if you have to overspend for someone who's presently available to help your club. Many of these people aren't even future Hall of Famers. Which brings me to the next question... how much would baseball legends like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Henry Aaron, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson (among other true greats) be worth today? Those were TRUE SUPERSTARS!
Cueto, Yu Darvish, King Felix, Desmond all come to mind. For those defending Pujols, and I loved watching him as a Cards fan. He is definitely not hitting his 24m per year average value. His best seasons with the Angels would not warrant that kind of contract. The remaining 29m, 30m 2 years will definitely be painful for the Angels to swallow.
The Rays are run by skynet, they know better than to give away money like these teams. They have the exact money ball algorithm figured out, they use time travel to figure out which moves are best, and which moves to avoid. If the Ray's has the money the Yankees or red Sox had, the league would be major league raysball
Notice how alot of these free agents come from tampa. Didn't even mention some of the other ones like Garza, Pena, Shields, Balfour and Rodney. Rays have been very good at getting rid of players right before they start sucking
Videos like these make me happy to be a Rays fan, as we don't have the money to make lucrative trades like these. We get to essentially wipe the slate clean every year. We also shed dead weight like BJ and Carl just before they spoil
Albert Pujols signed that 10 year deal in his 30s which was a big mistake on the Angles part. The only thing left to look forward to for the next 2 seasons is the possibility of him making it to 700 homeruns, right now he is at 656.
It's beyond insanity that these contracts are guaranteed. The MLPA is a mafia. What other job in the world guarantees you 100% of your money for years even when your performance sucks? There are very few that work that way, in any venue. I really don't know how these players sleep at night - they take free money all while crippling the teams ability to move on and become better. It's one of the few instances where I'm on the owners side, they should band together and fight the MLPA to weave in performance clauses into these contracts.
@Bob those are obvious factors you can’t control but when the opportunity arises and they’re at bat their job is to bring them in and Pujols has done that successfully throughout his career. His ability to do that is simply amazing.
Although i think pujols is a bit much, i think pujols is a big part of that angels clubhouse and to mike trouts career with Pujols' veteran presence. And the thing is pujols is very comparable to bryce harper who is supposed to be in his prime with pujols in 132 games batted .244 avg/.734 ops/23 HR/93 RBIs/.430 Slg and only 68 strikeouts Harper in 157 batted .260 avg/.882 ops/ 35 HR/ 114 RBI/.510 slg with 178 strikeouts now harper has better numbers but it's really not by a lot comparing a 27 yr to a 39 yr

Hayward really wasnt that bad. He braught some experience to an insainly young team. His defense is very valuable. Hes an average hitter. Very good baserunner. And theres not even a salary cap in the mlb. There is no reason to be calling it a terrible contract.
Dr Dino9 agreed. I mean if you go by the fact that the cubs traded for Chapman, and then he went back to the Yankees after winning a World Series, when really even though the cubs only got half a year out of him, I’d bet Theo would do that trade again 10 times out of 10 because it won him a World Series. Heyward was the same way. He helped the cubs win a World Series, so I think you still do that contract 10 times out of 10. I mean Heyward was one of the few veteran leaders on that very young team.
As someone who was so happy to see Josh Hamilton's recovery and rise to stardom in 2007, it was soo tragic to see him decline when he relapsed with the Angels. I wish him the best
Vernon Wells, Gary Matthews Jr., and AJ Burnett were all horrible contracts. Good to see you caught a lot of the ones, like BJ Upton, Jason Bay, and Carl Crawford, that immediately come to mind for me.
Part of the Pujols deal was taking ticket sales splits as the expectation would be people would show up while he continues to chase and break records. Unfortunately those financial considerations do not make up for how badly he has under performed. Love him but yeah, painful to admit, it was a bad deal.
As a Cardinals fan, I remember there being some serious questions about Albert Pujol's age when he became a free agent. Rumor was that he is 2-3 years older than he says that he is. Therefore that changes where you think he is at in his career. Additionally, there was a rumor where the GM gave him a pass to update his age and still offer him a major contract. Rumor goes that Pujols was reportedly insulted by the question and decided to leave St. Louis for marginally more money from the Angels. Still one of the greatest players of all time. St. Louis still gives him a standing ovation every time he comes up to bat for the first time during the few inter-league games that the Cardinals have against the Angels.
Not too harsh on Pujols, a bad contract is a bad contract. The problem with good amount of these contracts were that people still were in the mindset of the 90s-early 2000s when steroids allowed players to produce through their 40s. Now baseball is seeing players break down at 35 or so which is normal. With Pujols he deserved the contract and no one said it was a bad one at the time, maybe just too long. He broke down early and that's what happens.
@@mgraystl636 I said if he still played like in his Chicago days and boosted the lineup not him as of now. I think if he signed back in Chicago he wouldve kept producing and God knows the Cubs need a leadoff
@Joseph Soto Why pay over 20 mil for solid play tho his defense was down this year and yeah he came around offensively but that doesn't mean he somewhat deserves that's contract. Still don't understand why the Cubs offered him that contract for an above average season
It seems Pujols should be on there, it was the biggest contract of anybody on the list, BUT he provided FAR AND AWAY more production than anybody else on the list too. Shouldn't have been #1.
The Heyward contract wasn't seen as obscenely high when he was signed. The rumors even went around that he took less money than he was offered by other teams to come to the Cubs.
Correct. He was a 6.5 type WAR player because he was incredible at defense, a good base runner and a good (not great hitter). He just didn't work out that way for the Cubs, but the signed him when he was 26 years old. He did give a $200 million speech during a game 7 rain delay
Red Sox are trying desperately to move it so they can re-sign Mookie Betts. Not going to happen. The other teams only want Price if Boston pays most of the contract -- which doesn't save the Sox any money. Goodbye Mookie Betts!
I'm with you on the bad Cards contracts. I'm not letting Mo off the hook on the Albert deal. He didn't know Albert was going to regress that quickly. So he doubled down by giving the money Pujols should have gotten and p*ssing it away on the three contracts you mention.
I know we all have our opinion but hear me out. I don't think Pujols was the worst signing. Yes it wasn't an amazing one but def not the worst one. For me the worst signing was def josh hamilton. I say this bc after the angels signed him he fell off completely. At least with albert, he was helping a little bit but josh was just dead weight after the rangers.
Im surprised you left off the infamous Yasmany Tomas free agency deal. He signed a 6-year, 68 million dollar contract with Arizona despite bring completely unproven in the MLB... he is still being payed by the DBacks and has a career WAR of -2.5
Pujols with the cards is something special, and he still has a hold on the fans of st.louis, a few months ago, thousands of people donated to his charity in STL when he played for the first time against the cards
nailed it on pujols. it's like 2 different players stl. continues to be a playoff team, angels stuck at 10 under .500. and congratulations to all the players that got paid. i don't have a problem with that.
Marc: "Who saw Albert Pujols falling off like he did?"
St. Louis: Sup!

I'm the 136th comment
Mets Fanatic wasent Shea also a football feild?
@@dantehaskell5688 Yes, that used to be the home of the Jets, just like Yankee Stadium used to be home of the Giants.
Dante Haskell um I was not talking about that but I think so
My b xP didn't mean to type it here lol
if you have Bay on list, need have George Springer with Blue Jays.
5:57 "Justin Upton was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays" wish that was real lol
Nice one as usual. Could you please so the best free agent contract ?
Do players who lived up to their contract please✌️
Is it just me or did he mention all the Uptons when talking about just one of them?
5:58 “Justin Upton”
Part of the Pujols deal was taking ticket sales splits as the expectation would be people would show up while he continues to chase and break records.
Unfortunately those financial considerations do not make up for how badly he has under performed. Love him but yeah, painful to admit, it was a bad deal.
Mets sign Pat Neshek for 10 year 150 million
Apple Fanboy mets sign katw upton 45 million dollar
Your commercials though...😑
Awesome video! Thanks for all of your work. Your list is pretty solid.👌🏽
Craig Kimbrel/ Cubs?
1/2 of a year and its already a top 10 worst contract of the decade?
This is why you don’t sign older players to 10 year deals. How that got started is beyond me.
wow the angels screwed up
EJ Pearson not as bad as the Red Sox
@@cjmorton2436 Take your blinders off, the Angels have twice as many
Tigers really swapped Scherzer for Zimmerman with Washington
When visiting the stadiums did u like shea or citi field more from ur personal experiences?
Washington Rojoskins citi
Washington Rojoskins wasn’t Shea also a football feild
The last time I was this early
The mets made a good free agent signing
Not too harsh on Pujols, a bad contract is a bad contract. The problem with good amount of these contracts were that people still were in the mindset of the 90s-early 2000s when steroids allowed players to produce through their 40s. Now baseball is seeing players break down at 35 or so which is normal. With Pujols he deserved the contract and no one said it was a bad one at the time, maybe just too long. He broke down early and that's what happens.
That Heyward deal gives me aids I swear bro. Everytime I see that contract I wonder what the Cubs could've done with that money.
I think about how the Cardinals offered him MORE and he turned them down. We're paying Fowler $17 mil instead though.
@@mgraystl636 I'd rather have Fowler tho but only if he continued his play how it was in chicago
@@AshenFates well... he hit .156 in September and .077 in the playoffs sooooooooo...
What about Cano he’s got about contract don’t be bias with your damn Mets
Mets got him through a trade not a free agency signing, Cano signed that Contract with Seattle
Samuel Shawver So Josh Hamilton, BJ Upton, Carl Crawford, etc. got traded too
He’d also been a straight up incredible player on the mariners. Him having a bad year last year doesn’t qualify him for this list
Dustin Lee Exactly
Also it's only been one year so far
The Heyward contract wasn't seen as obscenely high when he was signed. The rumors even went around that he took less money than he was offered by other teams to come to the Cubs.
Correct. He was a 6.5 type WAR player because he was incredible at defense, a good base runner and a good (not great hitter). He just didn't work out that way for the Cubs, but the signed him when he was 26 years old. He did give a $200 million speech during a game 7 rain delay
As a Sox fan, when someone mentions the freaking panda I lose my mind
Has to be Nolan Ryan. His gm buzzie bavasi said he could easily be replaced by two 8-7 pitchers.
I’m early I need a joke uhhh Detroit Tigers
Rude
One thing I seem to recall about the Pujols deal was that he was looking for time more than money. He just HAD to have 10 years.
2 ads before the video starts and 5 more during a 14 minute video? No thanks!
The David Price contract is terrible too. 7 years, 217 million.
Red Sox are trying desperately to move it so they can re-sign Mookie Betts. Not going to happen. The other teams only want Price if Boston pays most of the contract -- which doesn't save the Sox any money. Goodbye Mookie Betts!
everybody saw the Albert Pujols thing coming , The Angels just like to waste money .
Pablo Sandy contract should have its own movie directed by Oliver Stone.
What if Rendon shocked all of us and just signed right now
Edit: this is random but I just saw Bob die in Stranger Things😡👎😞
how come I always see u
why u ruin show for me? :(
p.herm10 sorry I thought I was the only one still watching it😂
245 for 7 years to angels.
You’re the only Mets fan I like. Never thought I’d say that as a phillies fan but much respect brother. Enjoy your videos.
Good content! One suggestion: add the name or some graphics
Brett Cecil's contract, and Dexter Fowler's contract, oh and Matt Carpenter's. Yes I'm a Stl fan
I'm with you on the bad Cards contracts. I'm not letting Mo off the hook on the Albert deal. He didn't know Albert was going to regress that quickly. So he doubled down by giving the money Pujols should have gotten and p*ssing it away on the three contracts you mention.
MLB Owners should tell The Comissioner, total max contracts are 5 years & below
None of this 10 year contracts that never ever work out!
He signed a 6-year, 68 million dollar contract with Arizona despite bring completely unproven in the MLB... he is still being payed by the DBacks and has a career WAR of -2.5
LOVING that background track from Lupe Fiasco. Let's kick, and push, and coast......
Still think Machado, Harper. And cespedes
Pujols with the cards is something special, and he still has a hold on the fans of st.louis, a few months ago, thousands of people donated to his charity in STL when he played for the first time against the cards
2:29 I would love to see the Twins sign a starting pitcher and do what you said Zimmerman did. Same with the Yankees, and the Tigers doing that again
Much respect for that Kick Push instrumental. If ya know ya know
nailed it on pujols. it's like 2 different players stl. continues to be a playoff team, angels stuck at 10 under .500. and congratulations to all the players that got paid. i don't have a problem with that.
Where's Kei Igawa and Carl Pavano?
