Cab ride along one of the largest model train layouts about Germany’s coal and steel industry

  • In 2008 this superb model railway layout was opened in the city of Oberhausen, located directly in the heart of Germany’s coal and steel industry, the so-called Ruhr area. Then, this permanent model railway exhibition represented cities, landscapes, steelworks, coal mines and the rail transport in the 1970‘s. The model railroad layout was constructed in HO scale or H0 gauge and covered an area of more than 420 square meters. Due to financial problems, this model railroad exhibit was closed two years after the opening.
    Fortunately in September 2012, this large model railway layout was sold to a new owner, who re-installed the whole layout and made it accessible to visitors again. Today, this fine layout is a part of the railway museum, called „Modellbahnwelt Odenwald“, located near Frankfurt/Main, Germany. The miniature world was built according to original track plans, stations and landscapes, for example, the Oberhausen central station, the port of Dortmund, the blast furnace plant of Oberhausen, colliery and coking plants.
    On the layout, there are many replicas of well-known buildings in the Ruhr area. Furthermore, a special highlight is the photorealistic background system of the model landscape. The model railroad was designed as a two-wire digital system, which is used by model trains of Fleischmann, Roco and from many other manufacturers, except Märklin. Locomotives, light effects and trains are managed by the digital model railway control system „TrainController“. Enjoy Pilentum’s train journey of at least 80 minutes on a several kilometers long track system.

    Took the entire ride, every "mile". Loved every minute! At times I felt as though I was actually there! The other passing and overtaking trains only added to the realism. A very good idea to keep the roof of the building as dark as possible, adding to the "nightime" feeling. I would "ride" again! Fantastic!

  • @Landsend-Railroad
    @Landsend-Railroad 5 років тому +10

    I love the landscaping and do not have a problem with the speed. It is prototypical for sure. You are right, at higher speeds the details are becoming blurs. I have some experience from my own efforts taking cab-ride videos on my own layout. I was most impressed by the track work. The panorama along the walls as a background is well done and really opens up the scenery.
    The entire layout is very well designed and build, but why is it falling in bad repair in some aspects? I refer mainly to the catenary wire system. There are very few places where it would function as a working power pick-up. It is bent badly and even chopped-up in most places. It would be better to take it out altogether and just leave the masts and cross-arms. Something on the camera car often touched the over-head wire and made it jitter. I was worried it may get hung-up.
    One other thing that bothered me was the condition of many signals. Where they were red, they were ignored by the camera train and many form signals were bend out of shape.
    Excellent is the lighting. While the hall is in the dark, the track-work and landscape are well illuminated.
    I watched it all.
    Thanks for posting

      I do not know the entire history of this model railroad layout. But the maintenance has been neglected in recent years. But for a few months, two technicians are trying to optimize the layout, in particular the catenary.

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad 5 років тому

      @@pilentum I am glad to hear it. Are you considering to redo the entire route once he catenary is repaired and optimized?
      One more suggestion: Please check and improve the side stability of your camera car. It does tend to wobble a bit. It looks like it has only a two point suspension, rather than the required 3 points. It takes away from an otherwise very interesting video. I had the same problem with some of my cab view videos. I fixed it. Have a look at some of my videos.

    Four thou... thou... thousand eight hundred meters??? Say what???? ... Wow... 😲
    I try to imagine, the length of one meter, two meters, five meters, ten meters, then hundred meters, then... man... 😶
    The vastness of its landscape makes it look insanely realistic. The details are gorgeous. In the tunnels, behind the scenes, man, it looks like an alien planet out of a sci-fi fantasy.
    And the fleet of shining, cigar-shaped UFOs at the night sky. Must be an alien invasion 😉

    Wait, do I hear the sound of a steamengine?

    That's one hell of a ride. I'd do something with the catenary wire's, the way there all straggly and untidy and when they get caught in the overhead gear of the train is not good. Is there no way to build into the scenery the elevation changes rather than miles of hidden and wasted rail? Even so, it's the train set we all dream of.

    It would be more complete and authentic if the pentagraph was actually in place, not necessarily working but for show in place. I hope I got that right......"Pentagraph" ? (If I am wrong ,will someone please correct me.....) Otherwise, nice work. I notice that no one else cared to mention it, ah well. It is however, understandably difficult to get each and every detail absolutely perfect, in light of that fact, I think it is an outstanding job putting all that together,........this stuff never ends, it keeps going on & on, draining every penny you have just to make something so small appear just "so right". It's awesome........really is. Peace.

    Absolutely a delightful ride. Although the following items can be easily rectified: badly sloping ramp at one station, gaps in background boards, inconsistent power supply, out of scale figurines, dearth of red/green lights. But the best thing beside the wonderful landscaping is THE LACK OF DASHBOARD BOBBLEHEADS. Every other cab ride is severely ruined by the appearance of a real human head.
